Owner description: This National Park consists of 34 small islands just off shore in Boston Harbor. The most popular, George's Island, is home to Fort Warren, a Civil War Landmark that housed Confederate prisoners. Visitors to the 12 islands open for exploration can camp, kayak, tour lighthouses, ride harbor ferries, hike and swim.

Grew up in Boston area but had never heard of Fort Warren. Wonderful sunny day so took 1 hr ferry ride to George's Island and it was reasonable and great. Scenic views of Boston as well as lighthouses. Neat to watch planes land and take off right over us on the ferry. Ferry boat itself is neat and clean and well staffed with nice crew. The island is quite large with big greens which are unfortunately inhabited by geese and droppings are everywhere. Have to watch where you walk. Nice snack bar and clean restrooms. Spent an enjoyable day, learned a lot about the area. Took next to last ferry back to Boston to see Spectacle Island where we picked up a few passengers. We were disappointed that ferries to all the other islands are not running yet and they stop pretty early in the Fall.

The island is pristine with a lovely beach facing the Boston city line. It's so cool swimming while seeing the city. Thee us a cute little snack shack with great rocking chairs on the large porch. I think this place beats Revere or Nantastic beach for a beach destination.

There are also hiking trails spanning the entire island.

You can visit these islands on the cruise and see the Civil War fort, Fort Warren that has been used from the civil war all the way to World War II. Go inside and look at what it must of been like for the soldiers, prisoners, and army men during these wars.

Imagine a series of islands just a boat ride away from one of the most historical cities in America! Even better, imagine that they are quiet, beautiful, adventurous, and nearly free to visit! If you have an extra day in Boston and the weather is nice, don't hesitate taking the ride out to George's Island and Spectacle Island. Incredible views, great rangers, easy walks, and just plain fun! Great for single travelers, couples, and kids.

Take the ferry to George's island where barbecuing is allowed. Great views while listening to a summer concert and chowing down hotdogs, burgers, etc. The fort is a great place to explore after the meal as the stair climbing exercise will help burn off the calories. The view of the lighthouse and the adjacent islands is great too. If you want to swim, you need to go to Spectacle island where there is a small beach with a few lifeguards on duty. Both islands offer dining options.
