“Nice Hotel and Good Location”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

We visited Boston for the weekend and Eliot Hotel is where we stayed. The location was perfect for us, just a short walk to many shops and restaurants. Decor was very appropriate for the Boston atmosphere. Everything was clean and staff were friendly and helpful.

I stayed at The Eliot for 4 nights in early October 2013.
First the positives:
Great location! Very walkable area for restaurants and shops, historical sites, Fenway, museums, etc. Wonderful access to the "T" - the subway. Couldn't be better.
We had a suite, and the extra space was so comfortable and "homey." So nice to come back to after a looong day of sight-seeing. Nice decor, clean ... and the beds were perfect.
Despite the busy intersection, the room was completely quiet. We were on the 7th floor.
Room service was excellent - chowder was A+.
Staff was helpful, courteous.
Negatives:
The bathroom was a disaster. Small, but that's OK. The lighting was terrible. Bright in the shower - but dark in the mirror areas. Putting on make-up, brushing teeth, etc was tough. No natural light (which is understandable) - so the need for light is important. Funny, the two little wall fixture lamps had lamp shades. Lamp shades in the bathroom? The designer really missed the point.
The shower was large enough, but the water pressure was terrible. There were 3 adjustment to the shower head: very puny, puny and a tad better than puny. Tough to rinse off that soap and shampoo.
Lighting in the suite overall was insufficient; and given that the only windows looked into a small courtyard surrounded by tall buildings - the natural light was practically non-existent.
Breakfast in the dining room was OK - a small buffet and a few items off the menu. Quality was good, but the staff was from there Japanese restaurant and spoke very little English. Communication was tough. Not a big deal, but notable.
I had consistent problems with my reservations and discovered that calling on a weekend is not a good idea. Much better, responsive staff on the weekdays. Communication via email was available, but didn't seem to produce results.
Price: October is expensive ... and I found the Eliot to be a bit cheaper than the basic Sheraton/Marriott/Hyatt types.
Would I return? I don't know. The lighting issue in the suite was a problem ... and it was difficult to imagine how truly dark the suite would have been on a rainy or snowy day. Advice to management - upgrade the lighting and the showers.

Joseph P, Assistant General Manager at Eliot Hotel, responded to this review, 30 October 2013
I wish to thank this guest for taking the time to review her stay at the Eliot Hotel. We are delighted that the guest rated the hotel's comfort, location, decor and service so highly. I appreciate as well her insights into the lighting level and shower's water pressure. Our shower heads are of a noted manufacturer and we utilize full water pressure for showers and tubs. Lighting has been adjusted to meet the most popular levels of satisfaction. As a personalized service hotel, however, we endeavor to cater to our guest's specific needs and by simply informing us, we note guest's preferences and ensure they are realized during their subsequent stays. We would, of course, be delighted to ensure reserving a suite with a sunny exposure as well as extra lighting for this guest's next stay. Lastly, we are a bit perplexed about the perception of different reservations service levels between weekdays and weekends, as the same staff works during both periods. Perhaps this was an anomaly, in which case I certainly apologize for any frustration. We hope to welcome this guest back the next time she has an opportunity to visit Boston so we can ensure her next stay entails only "positives."

The Eliot is perfectly placed on Commonwealth Ave. It has an old world charm but the rooms, while a little small, up to date and fresh. Lots of restaurants nearby. Staff were efficient and friendly. I'd happily stay here again

The Eliot is a old world hotel in a really convenient location. The rooms are large and comfortable and the front desk staff helpful. Seems to be more geared up to business customers than please - lots of convention guests. Breakfast was quite expensive and we didn't feel encouraged to linger over it!

Recently stayed overnight at this very elegant boutique hotel. Very classic and old-school in its design. Unlike a big impersonal hotel, it felt cozy. Small elegant lobby with a check in desk to the right. Overall decor was very classic (rather than modern).

Probably the best thing about the hotel is its terrific location, right in back bay. Commonwealth Ave. is very elegant, and it's great for walking up and down, looking at the brownstones. Right around the corner, you have Newbury St., with all of the cafes, outdoor dining options, shops.

The room/suite was quite large and very elegantly appointed. I would say unusually large for a more classic hotel, with a separate living room, wetbar area, etc. Spacious and nicely designed. Bed was large and comfortable. The TV was off to the side, so not as easy to watch if you are in to the TV. Bathroom was on the smaller side, but very elegant.

Service was professional and quite nice throughout. The hotel also has two very nice restaurants, Clio and Uni. Uni, a sushi bar, serves late-night ramen (11-2 a.m.) on weekends - very tasty. All in all, a very nice hotel.

We enjoyed our stay of a few nights here. The location is ideal in the back bay where we could walk to nice shops and eateries on Newbury St. and the T. The room was elegantly appointed and rather large by Boston standards. The beds were full sized, which is smaller than the standard American queen-size. The housekeeping service is very accomodating (we were not disturbed during a long Sunday morning lie-in). While there seem to be quite a lot of staff in the lobby, the one doorman (Manuel) was great and the other was marginally helpful with offering us walking directions after he was unsuccessful in calling us a cab for 20 minutes... we tried to eat at their restaurant but waited for the hostess for more than 15 minutes...

My husband will turn fifty later this year but due to work commitments we celebrated a little earlier and decided to stay at The Eliot Hotel in Newbury Street and we were not disappointed .A very warm welcome and within 30 minutes of our arrival we were welcomed with a platter of chocolate chip cookies and strawberries,a lovely gesture. The room was beautifully decorated and spacious and the bed was paradise to sleep on. location is excellent to all the places you want to see such as the Common as you dander down through the Commonwealth Avenue. We were only a short distance from Fenway and House of Blues where we took in a Pet Shop Boys concert. This hotel truly has a personal touch and we would most certainly like to stay in it another time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are probably of the same high standard and those staying and affording this hotel woul...
