We were visiting Boston with our high school senior for a college audition and wanted to stay someplace that was walking distance to the T, Boston University, and Symphony Hall. I was also looking for a place that would give our son a favorable impression of Boston since he had never visited before. Found the Newbury Guest House on Trip Advisor (and I'm very glad we did).
Getting to the Guest House from Logan was a breeze (and public transportation from the airport is FREE via the silver line to the T); it was a short walk from the Hynes Convention Center Station.
We reserved a bay window double but were told when checking in that the heat was out in the room we reserved and did we mind having two separate rooms? From that moment, I knew we were going to have a great stay – a room for us and our teenager in his own room. The fourth floor rooms were clean, quiet and very comfortable. The beds were great. It was cold while we were visiting but the rooms were warm. Bathrooms were serviceable (shower, no tub). Our son’s room overlooked Newbury Street while ours faced the back alley. Breakfast, included in your room rate, is served in The Creperie adjoining the guest house. The buffet style breakfast included scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, toast, yogurt and cut mixed fruit. The restaurant itself was very pleasant with fresh flowers on each table and bay windows overlooking Newbury Street.
For lunch or dinner, we found lots of choices within a short walk of the hotel. Piattini’s, a nice Italian place with great food (try the scallop dish) and wine selection, is just down and across the street from the guest house. Just a few doors down is Kashmir – fabulous Indian food and decent beers and wine on their menu. Our son wanted breakfast one night and found it at Trident Booksellers and Café a short walk down the street (try the Morning Monte Cristo or the Bananas and Caramel Stuffed Pancakes).
The hotel staff was very nice and really accommodating. My brother came to see us one of the days we were there and needed a place to park. They were happy to add a day of parking to our tab (it was much less expensive for him to park at the guest house than in one of the public garages). On our last morning, my brother, his wife and son joined us for breakfast. My brother asked to pay and the hotel staff said, “No charge.” They even took our picture for us in the comfortable front room sitting area.
For those needing to work, their wireless internet worked well (stable and fast enough).
The guest house was a great base for our Boston adventures and the staff were friendly, helpful and kind. Walking distance to Boston University and Symphony Hall where we caught a Friday afternoon BSO concert. The Newbury Guest House is where we’re staying for any future trips to Boston or Cambridge.
