Strange place but not bad

Review of Copley House
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Aug 2019via mobile
Had a one night stay in Boston. All of the name brand hotels were either fully booked or super expensive.

Was surprised that it was not really a hotel but a number of serviced apartments. After I finally got to my room (and expecting the worst judging from the common areas) it really was pretty good, clean and comfortable. I will stay there again.

Recommended to stay in the Back Bay Area on a 2 day leg of a USA trip recently and Copley House seemed to be ideal, with solid reviews. However, it’s a distant last of the 4 hotels we chose across 4 cities, and represented very poor value for money.

The first point is that Copley House is a collection of houses in the near and not so near vicinity of the hotel reception. This was not obvious at all from the description. Ours was on a different street a good 5-6 minute walk away. We ended up lugging our luggage all the way there, then had to do the same to check out. No human representation at the satellite address.

Then there’s no lifts, so you need to think about that when taking luggage up and down stairs. Choose your floor carefully. Our minuscule room was for 3 but had a double and sofa bed, and we needed to carefully position luggage not to trip up. View was onto a fire escape to rear of property.

The bathroom was terrible, with a poor shower and the most basic of toiletries (back to 1970s B&Bs), and in insufficient quantity. Not a place to linger.

I can not fault the location, but the price for the room size, quality and ambience simply not appropriate. And for me with a remote reception and no services to speak of it felt more like a youth hostel than a hotel.

A big disappointment.

Spent one night on the way to Plymouth with my daughter, we arrived late in the evening. We checked in, the staff was nice and friendly gave us some food recommendations. Our place was across the street. The street is quaint with a nice park and they own Senegal buildings. I will say they did a nice job updating and it was very clean. There is no elevator and the staircase is very very steep. We were on the second floor and had to hike our suitcases. I am not sure if there is handicap accessibility. The room was very quaint and clean which we did appreciate. The next morning after we checked out they were also gracious enough to allow us to store our luggage while we drilled around town and got breakfast.

People that work at Copley House are very friendly and are truly there for the guests of the hotel. I was unhappy with my room because of noisy neighbors and receptionist at the front desk immediately offered to transfer me to another room. I forgot my apple earphones in the hotel room when I left and they mailed them to me! I am very grateful!

The only nuisance was that the walls in the hotel are very thin and you can hear everything. Other than that, I had a great stay. Hotel is in great location and the building is so pretty! There is a great bakery called Flour just a ten minute walk from the hotel, it’s amazing for breakfast and lunch.

The suite/apartment was very comfortable and spacious. Kitchenette had everything we needed. Parking was conveniently located behind the unit.. The overall location in Back Bay/South End was perfect for our visit for a Red Sox game. When there was a problem (closet door/drains in bathroom) the property fixed them right away.

The woman who checked us in was condescending and NOT friendly. Be aware that the amount of money you spend on this upscale suite does not matter . To this woman, I was "just another tourist"

Also, the unit itself did not have its own thermostat. I had to call the front desk and ask them to "turn up the temp" on the air con in the suite but they turned it off. This was okay as the weather was cooler than normal.

Room tip: None of the brownstones have lifts so it's important to specify ground floor if you have trouble climbing stairs.

Here are the positives: clean; comfortable bed; good location in Back Bay ... so close to shopping and transportation. The rooms associated with Copley House were original brownstone town-homes.. now converted to rooms and studios. If the owner had thought more of his guests than making many rooms so that he can make more money, it would have been nice ! Our room was mini size... mini bathroom; mini closet; mini kitchenette that was part of the entry way. Kitchenette had a small refrigerator and microwave. All rooms are apparently different depending on the brownstone. We had a table on which to eat, but the suitcase had to be on the bed... or, if sleeping, the suitcase had to be on the small dining table. We had no AC or fan -- we slept with the windows open -- they had no screens. The owners will also find that because they did not choose quality cabinets or doors, that these will soon be in disrepair. Presently, two of the entry doors to rooms were in need of refinishing. Our shower door handle was very loose... about to fall off. The photos-- except of the outside -- are mis-leading. I wold not stay here again.
