“Glad we picked this one!!”
Reviewed 25 September 2012

My husband and I stayed in Boston from Thursday thru Monday. We stayed in another B&B closer to Fenway Park the first 2 days of our stay. We were very happy that we chose 14 Union Park for the last 2 days. Devin was very kind and wanted our stay to be as comfortable as possible, and offered an upgrade from our original room to the Blue room. It was immaculate and beautifully decorated. We especially liked the artwork on the walls. The bathroom was so modern and clean. One perk was the heat that came out of the ceiling while showering!!! The B&B was close to many very good restaurants and bars. We even walked to the Prudential center which just took about 15mins. We will stay here again if we ever return.

Room Tip: Blue Room had a lovely room of the park and a very firm bed.

Located in the south end of Boston, 14 Union Park B&B was a very nice place to stay. Our room was large and beautifully decorated, the bathroom spotless. It's all in a gorgeous Victorian-era Brownstone on a beautiful, shady street - the neighborhood felt very safe. Street noise wasn't really a problem for us, but there was a problem with a noisy guest on the floor above us (not the B&B's fault!). I'm always amazed at how clueless some guests can be -- they must think they're the only ones staying there, right?
Yes, it would've been nice to have a "normal" B&B breakfast but we felt owner Devin did a good job of providing the basics to get one's day off to a good start: yogurt, juice, muffins, bagels (with cream cheese), wheat bread, cereals, jellies, teas and a K-cup coffee machine.
The location was good. Just a few blocks to a T station or bus stop. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 3 which was very nice.

When I think of b&b, I do not think of cereal boxes for breakfast and to make my own coffee. I think of hospitality. To talk with the locals and eat locally made food. The house is beautiful, but every bit of wall space is covered with art for sale. It's a little bit tacky. I felt like prices were everywhere I looked. Literally. Maybe have a price sheet, instead? This place is a lovely building and a bed, but not a b&b. Too expensive for what you actually get.

The location of the B & B is fantastic and the house is beautiful. Although we read on-line that breakfast was not cooked on the premises and we understood that a continental breakfast would be provided, we were extremely disappointed to find that the variety of items were very limited: bagels & muffins in plastic which were set out the night before and boxed cereals, no hot options and no fresh fruit or fresh juice (Dole fruit cups and bottled juices (with additives) were in the frig in the dining room). This really should not be listed as a B & B as we had to buy breakfast elsewhere. This must be what most people do as there are lots of listings in the information notebook about area places to eat and their breakfast menus . Also, shower in blue room was difficult to regulate and bathroom motion censor lights went out if the shower glass fogged up or if you stood stll in the shower. Since there is no management on the premises you can't ask questions about how things work.

We appreciate this guest's feedback and are sorry to hear some of their concerns. We strive to make improvements where we can which is the fun and challenging reward of operating a boutique business. We know our experience is perfect for travelers that seek bed & breakfasts for this unique character.

We'd like to respond to some of the concerns raised by this guest and always welcome feedback:

Unfortunately, local law prevents us from preparing any meals for breakfast. We do provide fresh fruits which include apples, oranges and bananas which perhaps were eaten by other guests. We adhere to high standards of cleanliness and place our muffins and bagels in individual bags to ensure our guests' food remains both fresh and untouched. Our breakfast includes: muffins, bagels, yogurt, fruit cups, fresh fruit, cereal, orange/grapefruit/apple/cranberry juice options by Tropicana, tomato juice by V8, english/green teas, regular/flavored/decaf coffees. We make every attempt to improve where we can while staying within local laws and regulations.

Listing of restaurants in our guest information book is because we are located in an area of great dining experiences and many guests come to enjoy great meals by our world class restaurants and we want to share some of the hidden gems in our neighborhood.

Our Blue Room shower has a child-proof shower valve to prevent children from be scaulded and we're sorry to hear for any difficulty with using it.

One of the major improvements we're planning for the property is a professional upgrade to all our lighting and will include professional tuning of our motion sensors.

Sincerely, Management

After some fairly intensive research, I settled on 14 Union Park, and was not disappointed. The neighborhood felt safe even at night (and we walked and took the subways mostly - no car).
But the little enclave known as Union Park was just perfect. Read up on the history of this South End Boston square, and you'll know that it's a haven even within the larger neighborhood of the South End.
We were in the "Green Room" - 49 steps to the top, 4th floor... (We both independently started counting steps after climbing the 294 to the top of Boston's Bunker Hill Monument... wheww!).
But up there, we felt like we had our own personal world. With a nice view of the square below, and similar houses across the way. There are two bedrooms that share a bathroom down the hall. But the management has wisely decided that they'd only rent both rooms IF both parties are "together" - so you won't be sharing a bath with someone you don't know. So we took the Green Room, and the Taupe Room remained unoccupied. The bath has a very nice, glass-enclosed shower stall (could fit two - or even four if you're so inclined ;) and an old, cast-iron claw-foot tub. (I imagined how difficult it must of been for whoever carted that tub up those 49 steps...)
What I don't think I realized when I booked was the little "kitchenette" that is part of this deal- small fridge - stove-top -sink - supplies such as paper plates and bowls and utensils included. That was great.
In fact, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit, that we felt sooo "at home" that we didn't even bother to to close, let alone lock, the bedroom door. So that last morning when we were lounging around but also getting ready to leave, I guess our TV was echoing out the door and down those 49 steps...someone on the floor below asked us to turn it down. Ooops! But I only relate that to let you know how comfortable we felt there - like we had our own little slice of Boston Cream Heaven.
I don't know what the other rooms are like, but I don't think they have that kitchenette...
And people like us are maybe being too noisy above there heads, so top floor for me.
And there's this other feature...When we got there that first rainy night...we opened a door right between the Green Room and the Taupe Room.... We called it the "Spooky Stairs" lol Old, unpainted wood stairs leading up into a darkness we couldn't penetrate. What's up there? You'll probably never discover because the management will most likely put a deadbolt on it after reading this ;) But it added to the charm and the realization that we were staying in a significant piece of Bostonian history.

Room Tip: IF you can handle those 49 stairs, the top floor gives you the privacy and assurance that no one wil...

We stayed for one night so I could attend a work function. We often stay in inns and b&bs so we are used to meeting the owners and hearing about all of the amenities of the place. We never once saw an owner/manager. But we had a beautiful room on the third floor, a very comfortable bed, and access to breakfast 24/7. The location is in the historic section of the South End and close to wonderful restaurants. With the exception of the crying baby in the next room, our stay was perfectly lovely.

We appreciate the feedback from our guests as it helps us to improve. We are a boutique bed and breakfast with just 3 guest rooms and are unable to staff full-time unlike larger hotels and inns. We do our best to notify our guests via our website and confirmations of these limitations. We always remain available by guest phone for any questions and do our best to check in with guests on their stay without sacrificing daily housekeeping and breakfast. Please keep the feedback coming!

I only stayed a few n ights, but I thought the 14 Union Park bed and breakfast was one of the best out there. The location is just wonderful and the amenities were eco-friendly and a pleasure to use. Great access to the public transportation in Beantown.
