Owner description: Join us as we celebrate our 20th year providing culinary walking tours of Boston's "Little Italy" North End and Chinatown. Boston Food Tours embraces Michele Topor's passion for all things culinary. Trained as a professional chef, Michele has taught cooking, catered, and consulted since 1979. Michele's cooking classes, market tours and culinary trips to Italy have been featured on the Travel Channel, TV Food Network, HGTV and CNN, as well as on the radio, and in various national and international publications. Close your eyes and imagine strolling down quaint and narrow streets while enjoying colorful sights, tantalizing aromas, and chaotic sounds as we wind our way through neighborhoods alive with colorful immigrant history and undiscovered "hidden gems". Both walking tours are like cooking classes on foot. You will learn how Mediterranean and Asian cultures prepare and enjoy their food, and how their dishes have been adapted to American kitchens. The secret of a cuisine is the high quality of ingredients, a sense of regional tradition and an understanding of the culture. In order to help you choose the best products, we visit the local merchants who stock the highest quality and most authentic ingredients, while learning how to avoid fraudulent imitations. On our tours, each stop provides a sample tasting of specific food ingredients and delicacies, often a benchmark flavor of that cuisine. Our experienced and knowledgeable guides offer cooking tips for incorporating these essential foods into your own recipes. As you become immersed in a world of ethnic flavors, you will learn the secrets of the world's healthiest cuisines. Our tours give you an insider's view of the vibrant, thriving ethnic enclaves. You will gain confidence in how to select the essential products that are both delicious and healthy. Your world and dinner will never be the same. Join us on Boston's oldest and most original culinary walking tour of "Little Italy" (North End) and Chinatown, and learn everything you must know to enjoy traditional Italian and Chinese foods in order to nourish your body in the way that nature intended.

My mom and daughter and I took the Chinatown tour with Jim as the guide. His experience as a chef, and a former resident of Hong Kong and Taiwan was the perfect fit for this tour. He had a good rapport with all of the shop owners that we visited, and a wealth of knowledge about the area and the food. The Chinese pharmacy was especially interesting, and the dim sum lunch at Hei La Moon was amazing! Excellent tour - excellent guide!

This was a perfect Mother/Daughter Day! We were looking for something different to do, and lucked out by having Michele as our guide. We ate plenty of samples, learned about the history of the North End, the foods that Italians enjoy, and visited numerous little shops. I learned a ton on this tour from our guide who has lived in the area for over 40 years...she is a wealth of knowledge. It was literally 100 degrees outside the day we took the tour, but both my mom and I were so happy with the day. Michelle is gracious, energetic, and just lovely. I look forward to doing the Chinatown tour in the future.

My husband and I took the North End Market Tour in June. The tour was led by Beth who was a very knowledgeable guide. We have been to Boston many times and our only regret now is not having taken this tour sooner. It was wonderful. We learned about the history of the North End and visited several authentic Italian businesses and enjoyed meeting the owners and sampling their specialties. If you want to learn more about the North End, its culture, and authentic Italian food, you must take this tour.

It was close to 100 degrees during our tour but our guide, Jim, a former chef, did a fabulous job keeping the 13 in our group interested intertwining historical and culinary information about the North End. We stopped at 6 shops in the area, most owned for over three generations by the same family and sampled pastry, cheese, meats and more. We learned about recognizing real products (who knew so much of the olive oil we buy in stores is rancid!) I do foodie tours whenever I travel to a city and I highly recommend this tour as one of the better ones I have done.

We visited 6 or 7 stores in and around Hanover street and had very tiny samples of their specialties.
Our tour guide Jim was very knowledgable and had foodie type info on how to pick out differences in olive oils, balsamic vinegars as well as pastries and wines. His narration of the north end history as we walked along was enjoyable also.
The shops are open for business as you're inside them listening to your guide go on about olives or whatever and at times we felt a little conspicuous as many patrons had to squeeze by us to move around the store.
Of course the hopes are that you return and purchase some items but I had no problem with that and felt we did gain so much from the experience
It was a pleasant and a little different way to spend a few hours and do something a little unusual.
