“Stunned. Not in a good way.”
Reviewed 25 June 2012

My boyfriend and I are in our early twenties and have travelled a lot, staying in a lot of budget places. But, as other reviewers have said, budget should not mean dirty.
It is now nearly 1am and we are being kept awake by our neighbours blaring music and talking loudly. This is our third night here and each night has been the same.
We are sleeping on mattresses older than we are that creak and have springs that prevent you from finding a comfortable position. The bed sheets are torn and we have taken the filthy blanket off completely. We are sharing a bathroom with 3 other people and the toilet backed up. We went to the management office but had no response at all. Luckily, we came across housekeeping who unblocked it, and supplied us with a plunger in case it happens again!! The kitchen facilities are fine but with no washing up products which strikes me as a bit disgusting. Speaking of management, when we met him initially, he was very pleasant and allowed us to check in early. But when we were taken to the room that he had told us was ready, there were wet, dirty towels on the bed. This didn't seem to phase him at all.
The people who are currently keeping us awake with awful music tend to sit around the apartment all day whereas we like to go out all day and explore, the hostel is a five minute walk from the subway stop which is a plus. So, if you've come to Boston to get drunk and see nothing but the inside of your hostel, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, I really do recommend that you spend a bit more money for a nicer place. We were desperate, unfortunately, due to last-minute booking. Lesson learned.

Boston seems to have limited, economical accommodation. The Farrington is reasonably well located, in a busy area, with lots of restaurants and an easy subway trip from the city centre. However, It is very shabby. It smells. The hall ceiling leaked water from the upstairs?! Clock radio not working. No internet service in room (despite advert), rather unclean, and shared bathroom/toilet was horrible. No interaction with proprietors. A bad experience.

I didn't like it here at all. Although the location is perfect. It's not in the city centre, but at the universities, restarants, bars and clubs. The beds are really crap. Both days I waked up with pain in my hips/back and neck. There is a smell of wet dogs and you can really hear everything. The wall between to room next to me had also a door. When people walked from the stairs the whole house shaked. And worst of all, when I was outside drinking a beer at the parking lot, I saw 2 huge rats going down into the cellar!

I stayed here in an apartment with four other friends.

The price was amazing for the location.
The 'T' Green Line (Boston College Branch) provided an excellent connection into the City Centre and was inexpensive. Harvard Avenue and the surrounding main roads have adequate offer of retail, food and drink etc.

The decor of the place is intentionally old-fashioned.
I found that it gave the place a charm, there are wooden floors and period features.

We had a Television, adequate bathroom facilities, and a kitchen, it was more than suitable.
Staff were very efficient, no problems whatsoever!

Room Tip: We were placed in an adjacent apartment. Maybe ask if it's free?

I would describe our stay here as comically bad for the following reasons:
1 - We could hear everything that went on in the bathroom (including various bowel and gas movements);
2 - the whole place could use some maintenance, especially the stairs that slope and creak like they are about to fall down, the exterior wood paneling that looks like it is original 1880's material and the carpet which hasn't been vacuumed in the last decade;
3 - the interesting smell that wafts throughout the whole building after someone has cooked a meal (on the nights we were there it was cabbage, garlic stew and burnt toast).
4 - directions to the accommodation which stopped at the train stop, and didn't help us get to the actual street.
5 - the constant fear of waking up with bed bugs (which luckily we didn't get, but whenever i itched i thought the worst).

We knew we were in trouble when he asked us to pay up front before seeing the room and then he proceeded to walk us 2 streets over to a place that looks like it belongs in a jeepers creepers movie.

All in all, i would recommend the place if you don't have much money and start with low expectations. On a positive note, the place is in a cool area with a great Vietnamese restaurant and some good bars.

Room Tip: Rooms near the toilet are funny!

Cheap, Cheap. Was a good experience, stayed in a share room and was clean. Bathroom is big and it's not that bad. Has a public space, has wifi, and it's 35 dollars, can't complain about that. It's not as clean as one wishes, but for a 35 bucks place, is not bad. You just have to walk 5 minutes to the nearest train station and you get to the center of boston in 15 minutes. If you want the cheapest place in boston stay here.

I share many of the feelings of other reviewers. The price is cheap ($50 per person). It's a good deal for one person. But it's not such a fantastic deal for couples. If frills matter at all to you, don't choose this place. Pay a little more a night and go to a regular hotel. We didn't find the Farrington to be dirty, just old. Everything works (showers, sinks, heating). Not bad in the spring/winter. Probably miserable in the summer, with no AC. The worst thing for us was the bed. One of the worst beds I've ever slept in. Clearly WAY past its prime. Minimal bedding too, as mentioned in other reviews. No frills lodging is fine for us, so the Farrington served our purposes, and saved us $$. The place is a bit over priced, for what they offer. But we sort of liked the weird decor, and the management were nice enough, even let us check in early without additional cost. We were up on the 3rd floor, in the attic.

Room Tip: The attic is fine, if you're vampires like us.
