“Pretty good...but be sure to get a room on the east side of the hotel”
Reviewed 14 July 2011

I can't complain, really, as I got a last-minute deal here via Priceline. The hotel is everything you'd think a hotel in its price range would be: super clean, super efficient, friendly. The complimentary breakfast alone would cost you $25 if you had to pay for it; a real feast! Very roomy.

If you do stay, book a room on the east side of the hotel. Why? On the west side, the lights are a-blazing 24/7 (curtains effectively blocked the light), and there is a view of the highway next door, ie, you'll hear it. There IS free parking immediately on the west side of the hotel, but there are only about 20 spots; I was quite lucky to get one. Otherwise, you'll have to pay $32 overnight valet, which is exorbitant, I think, by any standard.

Stayed here during the week leading up to the July 4 celebration for five nights using accumulated Marriott Rewards points for a family vacation in Boston.

First, the staff: On arrival, we met Geraldine at the front desk and felt like we would be "at home" all week. I almost hate mentioning people by name because EVERY staff member all week in this hotel was first-rate and I don't remember any other names!!. Geraldine just set the stage for us to be impressed. I regret not remembering the names of the five or six folks who staffed the breakfast area throughout the week. The hotel was VERY full and lots of international travelers were at breakfast each morning. It was hectic and there were many special requests. The staff never failed to smile; always appeared "out of nowhere" when you needed help or your child spilled while serving himself from the buffet; and to boot, one sweet staffer kept appearing with little party treats for the kids. These were penny/party store plastic trinkets but my kids were tickled to death to be treated so specially. I cannot stress enough how calm, friendly and professional the staff are here. One of my children had an accident in the night and was mortified we had to call the front desk for clean-up help early in the morning. Not only did the woman at the desk calmly dispatch clean linens and the friendliest of housekeeping representatives, she offered to send up a treat for my daughter. Bravo for probably the best Marriott staffing we've encountered anywhere . . . and we almost always stay in Marriotts.

Location: FABULOUS. Our rooms faced the spectacular modern Bunker Hill bridge and a vista of both center city and Cambridge buildings beyond. We were in #818 and grandparents were next door in #816. LARGE, clean rooms. Perfect view -- even if the view toward the Harbor would have been better. We went to the USS Constitution park area each morning (a 5 minute walk ) and either jumped on a bus or into a taxi to start our sightseeing day. We could have hailed cabs right at the hotel . . . but the Constitution is such a gorgeous ship, my hubby, my father, and my son all wanted to start their days under its impressive masts. Note: I never thought I'd recommend any trolley tour company in any city . . . but we used Upper Deck/Super Tours two-day ticket and saw all of Boston and Cambridge with really knowledgeable drivers. Traveling with grandparents and small kids, this tour option was a LIFESAVER and helped us decide where we wanted to visit during the rest of our week.

Note: If you're a city dweller used to walking everywhere, this hotel is hugely walkable to most of Boston tourism hotspots. It sits ON the Freedom Trail. My husband and I loved walking to the North End Italian restaurants several different evenings. Crossing the Charlestown Bridge was fun on foot . . . in June. I can imagine it's pretty brutal in the winter or in a rainstorm, so plan accordingly. Take some time to just relax and enjoy the hotel's "grounds". How often do you stay in a hotel built on a wharf, surrounded by gorgeous pleasure boats with a great small city skyline??

FOOD: The breakfast was wonderful each day. Many good, healthy choices and lots of sunny places to sit, both inside and out. The hotel is in an area where you have to walk just a bit, but there are many great spots for food. We had a delightful evening in Max and Dylan's City Square (the original is near the theatre district in the city). It's newer, sleek, and serves great food with attentive, fun staff. They accommodated a party of six LATE on a Sunday night. We closed the place down but were never rushed or made to feel we needed to leave. This is the closest restaurant to the hotel (less than one block) and we really enjoyed it.

PARKING: What do you expect from a hotel in any city? $30+ is a bargain in NYC and is on par with Philly and DC. We enjoyed peace of mind so it was worth the $$.

DOG OWNERS: We regret not bringing our dog. There is a fabulous dog park (looks like a dog Mecca each morning and dinnertime!) just under the Charlestown Bridge from the hotel.

OVERALL: This hotel epitomizes what Residence Inns were designed to do: create home away from home for families and professionals on extended stays. All four of us give it a big thumbs up!

Room Tip: Ask for upper floors for memorable views. Harbor side is best . . . but the side facing the Bunker...

Wife and I were in Boston for the annual Harborfest. Residence Inn seemed a good choice for people who wished to be near the water--near Old Ironsides for her annual sailabout on 4th July, etc.--and we were more than satisfied, being able to view Old Ironsides plus a good deal more of Boston's harbor action just from our room. Front Desk, breakfast and housekeeping staff exceptionally pleasant and helpful. Breakfast excellent and "Managers Reception" better than many such...though no booze.

Hard to come up with a complaint but I found the lack of a phone book, even a hardcopy listing of TV channels and local guide, inconvenient. Apparently decision been made to put all such info ONLINE. But: TWO hardcopy Holy Bibles found in room! Would rather have the phone book and the TV listing, thank you very much.

Two bus lines to downtown pass nearby, plus just five minute walk to the free--with transit pass--MBTA water shuttle to downtown.

I found some Tripadvisor reviews confusing on the walk to North Station, so will try to clarify. You can walk over the bridge right next to the hotel at all times of day and night and the MBTA North Station is about 10-15 minutes away. There is also a rather poorly-marked walkway route to North Station that follows the more interesting path over the Charles River locks, maybe a few minutes shorter. But perhaps not recommended after dark or if transporting luggage.

After reading reviews of hotels in the Boston area we were concerned about this hotel's location, not to worry, it is very convenient for touring Boston, couple of nice neighborhood eateries close by. Very clean hotel, good breakfast, but best of all was a wonderful, friendly and very helpful front desk staff. Can't say enough about how friendly they were and their great advice on getting around, things to see and do, and good close by restaurants.

The pros of this hotel are many: large room, fabulous harbor view, fine service from front desk and car valet, good value despite high $35 daily parking charge, and a surprisingly good hot breakfast. The only con is the location at the former Navy Yard in Charlestown. About a 15 minute walk to the "T" at North Station or a cab ride to get anywhere. Only one good restaurant within walking distance, but several only a 5 minute drive away in the North End. But even the location has positive aspects: beautiful, quiet surroundings in an historic setting far from the chaos of downtown.

Even though this hotel shows up in most hotel sites as located in Cambridge area, it's actually within walking distance from the old town and downtown Boston. It's located right next to USS Constitution and has a great view of the Boston harbor. The only inconvenience of this hotel would be parking, which costs $32 per day for valet at the hotel. There is a public parking right in front which costs $22 per day (outdoor, 1 min walking distance) and an indoor parking which cost $20 per day(3 min walking distance).
Everything else other than parking is great! Every room is a suite with fully equipped kitchen and they even do groceries for you if you stay long.
One of the things that I liked most about this hotel is the complimentary breakfast which includes amazing self served waffles and English muffins. Be sure to try it if you stay here.

My friend and I just stayed at this hotel for a 3 day weekend. We enjoyed it, because we are just two guys that were there for the weekend to tear up the town and see everything there was to see. We did not want to fork out the money to stay in a plush hotel. This hotel fit what we were looking for: Full Breakfast, Refrigerator with Ice Maker, Close Proximity to Airport, Excellent Staff, Great Hot Tub. The only thing that was bad about this hotel was the beds. Just to hard or firm to be comfortable. But since everything else about this hotel was great, we didn't complain. We normally stay at Renaissance, so we are picky, and this place was acceptable.

If you are a couple looking for somthing more romantic, you should proabably fork out the extra money to stay at the Marriott at Copley. Very nice bar at that hotel. Not to mention all the shopping and restaurants. I'm not sure about the rooms, but if I ever go back to Boston with a mate, I would be looking at the availability of that hotel.

Just a few notes for like travelers: The liquor/beer and convenient store are about 5 blocks away, but very walkable.

The subway is a 8 minute walk away. You can walk across the bridge or the quickest way is across the locks at the dam.

I would recommend taking a cab or shuttle to the hotel when you arrive in Boston if you are not familliar with Boston. It's about $25. But on your departure, you can take the subway back for $2. Ask the staff for help about which subways to take (orange line then transfer to blue line. It's very doable. We made it from the hotel to the airport in 40 minutes on a Sunday.

Also word of advice, take a rain jacket for very changeable weather. We did not, and it was a big mistake. Especially at night when we wanted to go out. Lines at bars are long.

Overall we were pleased with this hotel I would have gave 5 stars if the beds were more comfortable. Just take a look at the map and make sure you are OK with walking across the river to the subway or other attractions.
