“Limited access for non-members”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2011

It is a beautiful building inside but essentially a private library with only first-floor admittance for non-members. There is not much to do there unless you are going for the intermittent exhibits. We saw an exhibit on Mid-19th Centure Bostonians in June, which was mildly interesting but beyond that, this does not seem to be a place where you could spend the afternoon reading or be permitted to do research unless you are a member.

“Take the free art & architecture tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2011

Absolutely free hour-long tours are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. Each tour is limited to 8 participants, and the focus is on the history and portraits & sculptures scattered throughout the historic building (1849). This tour is the only way for non-members to see the architecturally stunning upper four floors. Just a half block from Boston Common park (subway Park Street or Government Center). Reservations are required. [--]

“A surprise find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2011

The Athenaeum is private members only library located in an historic building filled with great art and good stories told on the tour. You don't have to take a tour to visit, but if you want to get off of the ground floor, you will have to join the library take a free tour, which was well worth it. We went back on a latter day just to enjoy the great atmosphere and good selection of books.

By the way, we have no idea why this is listed under the Boston Shopping category on TripAdvisor.

“Hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2011

Lived in Boston ten years before I even knew it was there and it's right off the common. Went forthe Edward Gorey exhibit, which deserves 5 stars itself. Really cool oldschool upper class Boston at it's best. A real slice of history that you don't usually see.
