“Hidden gem!”
Reviewed 21 June 2012

If doing the Freedom Trail, don't miss this free spot! A lovely building with some fantastic architecture, old books, and wonderful art.

Please don't bring your children, your cellphone, or your loud voice.

“1st Library founded by Benjamin Franklin”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

I participated in the renovation of this historic site 15 years ago. What a national treasure. Old school style and stacks. A real book lovers dream. Backs up to the Granary Burial Ground. A must see right near the Golden Dome of the State House at 10 1/2 Becon Street.

“You'll expect to run into Ben Franklin in the stacks ... a classic”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

I've been a member for YEARS, and I think this is one of the great hidden jewels in Boston. Although it's a private library, guests are welcomed into the main library, which is a stunning example of classic Boston architecture. It's the oldest library in the country, and they have an amazing collection. Membership is NOT expensive, either!

The library has quirky, cool parties, like The April Fool's Party ... love it.

“Limited access for non-members”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

It is a beautiful building inside but essentially a private library with only first-floor admittance for non-members. There is not much to do there unless you are going for the intermittent exhibits. We saw an exhibit on Mid-19th Centure Bostonians in June, which was mildly interesting but beyond that, this does not seem to be a place where you could spend the afternoon reading or be permitted to do research unless you are a member.
