We just spent 4 days in the Ashmont Suite, and it was very neat and cozy, we slept well, the breakfast was good and Heidi is so sweet and attentive to her guests. It's also very close to the highway and the T so you can move around Boston pretty easily. The neighbourhood is safe and quiet.

If you want to hear people in the room next to you and doors opening and shutting at all hours of the night and the maid coming in at 8 o'clock in the morning, then you don't want to stay here. This is like staying at your grandmother's house. Comfortable, quiet, and clean. You wake up to the smell of fresh brewed coffee and the breakfast is the best you can get any where. Heidi the owner is great! She is so helpful and informative. She goes to the bakery almost every morning and gets fresh muffins and bread. We had the best fresh fruit. They provided an assortment of juices and tea, not to mention yogurt. One morning we had lox and bagels. It is close to the T so you're a short distance from downtown Boston and Dorchester itself is a great area. The house itself is a work in progress but I think that is part of the charm of it. We just loved it, and felt so comfortable here. Our son lives close by so we will be staying here when we visit him. This is the best kept secret in Boston. We we're so lucky to find it.

It was a great experience. Heidi was a lovely hostess, also very helpful in terms of tourist recommendations (she lend us lots of books about Boston). The location is good also, because is really close (2 minutes walking) from a subway station (called T in Boston) so it was really easy for us to get every where we wanted to in order to see that beautiful city (15 minutes in the T to get to the center of boston and 25-30 minutes to get to cambridge, all in the same line, no train changes required...).
The house is a work in progress, so you have to have an open mind about it, but the room (for my wife and I the one thing that really matters) was perfect, spacious and the bed was really comfortable.
The other great thing were the breakfasts. REALLY good. The best we have in all our trip (32 days across the East coast), and they're that good because Heidi takes a special care about them. She buys the stuff in local nearby places, and it was always fresh and delicious, also quite plenty. It really shows that she enjoys doing the hostess role. She care about us sincerely, not just a "McDonald's smile" as in all the usual hotels.
So if you want to have a nice trip to boston, on vacations, give Carruth house a try. is a nice place in a quiet bostonian neighbourhood, a couple blocks away from the subway (the T), hosted by a really nice woman, who tries really hard to make your stay as good as possible.

We enjoyed our stay at Carruth House: the breakfast was fantastic (baked goods from a local Irish bakery, fresh seasonal fruit, juices, yogurt, excellent coffee) and ready when we were; we were able to dine on the deck in back of the house; the suite was roomy and quiet for sleeping and the bathroom was immaculate. We plan to return when we're next in Boston and are glad that there is a wonderful choice of rooms. They are roomy, comfortably furnished and have character. Parking is not a problem (though it is in most other parts of Boston!), but if you don't have a car, the Ashmont T Station is only 5 min. walk away. Next time, we don't plan to rent a car.

Room Tip: The Ashmont Suite where we stayed has its private bathroom. There is another room on the third floo...

We very much enjoyed our stay at Carruth house. The first thing to remember about the house is (as the owner told us) it's work in progress. This however doesn't take anything away from the building as it's very homely & inviting.

The Owner Heidi is very welcoming and friendly. She was more than happy to answer any questions regarding the area and Boston. Heidi also had an array of books she was more than happy for us to use to give us ideas of what to see/do in the area.
The map of the area that was provided was also very useful!

The breakfast that was put out for us was great and probably one of the better breakfasts we had in a hotel/BnB on our trip.

The room was adequate for our needs, but I can't comment on the wait for the communal bathrooms in busier periods. Although we didn't have any issues with that.

The common room was great with lots of character (and a pool table).

The surrounding neighbourhood feels very safe and plenty of street parking. We were staying around the Halloween period and was told that people bus in children from other areas to "trick or treat", so that does confirm how safe the neighbour is.

It's only a short walk to the "T" station and about a 20minute journey into the centre of Boston. I probably wouldn't want to hang around the station for that long if you stand out too much like tourist, but as soon as you go one block you're in what feels like a safe area.

All in all, I would highly recommend Carruth House to anyone and plan to stay there again next time we come to Boston!

My husband and I stayed here for a few days back in October. Heidi is a great hostess, very friendly and helpful! The walk to the metro is only a few blocks away, and the breakfast was amazing!! One morning she had gone to the bakery and snatched up the last Boston cream pie they had. It was the most heavenly thing I have ever had! Yum! The house itself is gorgeous, BUT, the one thing I would recommend is... if you like to sleep in, do not book the suite! We did and I kind of regretted it. The bathroom is not attached to the room itself, and the only thing separating it from the breakfast bar was a curtain. Every morning I was woken up by 6:30 by talking and racket right outside our door. I think the rooms upstairs would be a little more pleasant as far as noise is concerned. But other than that, this is a great place to stay!

I had researched before arriving so I knew it was not in Boston city center, however the short walk to and from the T was no hassle and never a long wait for a train. The twin room was really nice with very comfortable beds. Didn't need to share bathroom because I was alone on the top floor. Great coffee every morning while watching TV in the great "great room". Heidi was a valuable source of information for a first time visitor to Boston. The neighborhood was nice and I always felt perfectly safe walking to restaurants or the T. Blasi cafe was a good place. Great stay in a great town. If going back to Boston I will most certainly stay in the Carruth house again.
