Get your walking shoes on! 296 steps to the top of the dome where you can walk out and be right next to the indian statue! Great tours given by great tour guides. A must do if you're in Topeka!

The Kansas State Capitol was recently renovated and is open for tours Mon - Friday. There are two tours. The Dome tour actually climbs hundreds of steps on narrow, hanging walkways to the very top. An outdoor balcony rings the top of the dome where you can take photos and then descend. It's not for anyone with a fear of heights or who has difficulty with steps. The Capitol building is a more sedate tour full of fun facts. It allows you inside the governors office, the KS supreme court, the Senate and the Representative chambers and the Library too. I particularly enjoyed the art on display and the stories behind the art. If you enjoy architecture, you will be amazed at the details and flourishes used to decorate this opulent capitol. I recommend both tours which are free. You can't beat that when you are touring on a budget.

The Ks State Capitol has always been impressive...but with the renovations & addition of the new Visitors Center, it is truly outstanding. The building is spectacular & historically significant. The art is fabulous. Watch for unique details, like sunflowers worked into brass railing supports. The State Seal appears numerous places thru-out the building. Whether you take the tour or simply wander thru, it's well worth the time spent.

We opted to not take the tour so we just wandered around. I have a feeling the tour would be more interesting. It was interesting to see the various pictures in the catacombs. The murals are simply amazing. The various time capsules were something that I wasn't aware of. I'm not sure I'll be going back any time soon but it was definitely a good free way to spent an hour of out the heat.

If you are in Topkeka and have extra time, this is a beautiful building to tour. We did the self guided tour but next time will do one with a guide as we did not get to go to the top.
