“Nice but....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2013

For the price, breakfast should be included. It was in a nice location right next to the Esplanade, but perhaps the Homewood suites next door would have been a better value. The hotel was very well decorated and a nice layout. My biggest complaint was that there was hair left in my bathtub from the previous occupants. I can usually overlook such things, but for the price I paid for the room, I expected better. The manager offered me a sincere apology and two Starbucks coffees as compensation. Not quite enough.

Room Tip: If you want to see the water, make sure you ask for a room with a balcony and overlooking the water.

Stayed here just one night but it is my new place to stay in San Diego. Have done Marriott Downtown and Coronado. Both are nice, but way more expensive and parking can be a hassle. This hotel is located right by the airport but airport noise was not a problem. The rooms are a bit small but well appointed . We are runners and there is a nice path near the hotel that connects with Harbor Drive. You can rent kayaks and paddle boards across from the hotel and there is a nice park adjacent to the hotel. You can get food at a variety of restaurants at Liberty Station.
The hotel has a deli with Starbucks. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel if you want someplace nice, but not necessarily luxurious.

We stayed at this property in September 2012 a couple of days before and after a trip to Cabo. I'm a Marriott Rewards member, so this was the first choice on my list of places to stay in San Diego, plus it was close to the airport and they provided a free shuttle.

The staff were nice and the room was great. We really appreciated that they let us keep our car at their property while we were in Mexico for a week.

We had a nice water view and saw people running, paddleboarding and kayaking and we got to see the fireworks at night.

The only thing that kind of soured our stay was my sister had left her prescription sunglasses in the room. She called the hotel as soon as she realized they were missing, but it was too late, as they said they did not find anything in the room. She told them exactly where they had fallen, as it was on the side of the bed near the wall, but they insisted they were not found. They were pretty expensive glasses and she had to buy another pair once she got home. It just kind of makes you wonder about the honesty of people sometimes, which is a disappointment.

Also a suggestion for Marriott: The instructions for shuttle pick-up from the airport could be a little clearer as we were waiting near the general shuttle pickup location for the airport and didn't realize until about 30 minutes later, and a few phone calls, that you have to cross the walkway as they pickup at a side location near the airport. Not too much of a big deal but it did waste some time and was a little confusing.

Overall, we liked the hotel and if we stayed again would just make sure we triple check that we have everything before leaving.

We loved our stay here! Everything was great. The location was perfect, the room was spacious, the views were beautiful, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the facilities were clean and in great condition.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a bay view.

We have always had good experiences with Courtyards and this one is no different.

Wonderful shuttle driver who gave us some advice about where to eat close by.

Very helpful and accommodating front desk staff. They even let us come back and play in the pool after we had checked out because we finished our sightseeing early and didn't have to be at the airport for 1.5 hours.

The pool is perfect for kids, it is only 3 feet and 4 feet deep. This meant that my 7 year old could touch everywhere in the pool and my 3 year old could touch in 1/2 the pool. It also meant that I could sit and watch them instead of being in the pool the whole time. There are also a large set of steps leading into the pool and I saw many infants and toddlers playing on those.

The location is great, central to tourist attractions, yet quiet. Von's and Trader Joe's are within walking distance. Our room had two refrigerators and a microwave so we bought some snack groceries our first night.

The breakfast buffett was 12.50 so we didn't try eat, we didn't think we could eat 12.50 worth of breakfast. We never did eat in the restaurant.

The paths and greenery and water around the hotel were great! There is even a very small strip of sand so the kids can go out and dip their toes in the water.

This is a great hotel for kids and for families who want quick access (15 minutes to most places) to traditional tourist stops.

We would definitely stay here again!

So glad to hear that we lived up to your expectations. Our staff word hard to make sure everyone has a memorable stay and it seems we were successful. Sounds like you were able to get out and explore Liberty Station which we think is pretty amazing. Can’t wait to see you again, and try the breakfast – I think you’ll enjoy it.

Take Care,

Not surprised by the favourable reviews as this is more like a resort hotel than a Courtyard or airport hotel. Nice welcome from the reception staff and no problem getting into our room before 2pm and by 2.30 we were lazing around the pool. Very nice pool which caught the sun until 5.30. Most of our 3 day stay it was quiet but occasionally got a filling of up to 10 children/parents/grandparents. Excellent breakfast with smoked salmon and fresh fruit as well as the usual eggs, bacon sausage etc. we ate two nights in the restaurant which was not heavily used but service and food were good. Jim the famous barman makes a great margarita and there is plenty of places to drink it, including a nice indoor/outdoor area with a fire and a business centre which is a library with computers. There are restaurants,Starbucks and Subway within 250yds walk. Great view of planes taking off , the noise is audible by the pool but not intrusive and inaudible inside the hotel. Nice walks around liberty station 3 miles and Spanish Landing 2.5 miles parkland with no graffiti or homeless people. The only disappointment was that we had booked a suite as we were relaxing after a two week drive down the coast from Seattle. The website does not make it clear that the suites have no balcony and are in fact two small corner rooms that have been joined together as a suite as they would not be able to be let as individual rooms. So the suites are in a poor location although they are of good size. In addition the bed abuts the ice maker and Pepsi machine which actually makes the wall vibrate behind the bed head. Luckily we always travel with ear plugs. We were offered an alternative room and in retrospect should have taken a fourth floor room at the south end as these have the best views.

Room Tip: Choose a fourth floor water view. Do not choose a suite

Thank you for adding your comments. So glad you enjoyed the breakfast and had the opportunity to visit Jim. He does make a great margarita. Sorry to hear that our suite didn’t make the cut and that it was loud. I’ll have our engineering check out the Pepsi and Ice Machine just to make sure they are working correctly. I do hope you get a chance to visit us again.

Having never been to San Diego I went on Trip Advisor for help in picking a nice hotel with a good location near all the attractions. The Marriott Courtyard Liberty Station had such good reviews we selected it for our first San Diego vacation. It's been everything everybody says about it.

The grounds are beautiful and very relaxing. The location is excellent as you are a short drive to all the attractions, but not any where near the hustle and bustle of the city. Old Town is only about a 10 minute drive where you can pick up the Old Town Trolley for a great introduction to the city.

The first night our A/C wasn't working properly so they immediately moved us to a different room. The front desk people were very attentive and friendly, especially Samantha. Jim the bartender was great also.

We would come back here again!

I’m so glad you enjoyed your first visit to San Diego but want to apologize for the A/C issue when you first arrived. I was happy to see we resolved it in a quick and satisfactory manner. Thanks for the shout out to Jim and Samantha – we agree they are special folks and we are lucky to have them as part of the team - I’ll be sure to share these comments with them.

Please visit again and travel safe.
