“Very Comfortable, but don't close the bathroom door..........”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2014

I couldn't decide how to rate this hotel. For the most part, it was excellent and just what you want in a hotel - comfortable, quiet and clean rooms in a good convenient location. And all at a reasonable price, at least by San Diego in-season prices. Convenient to Del Mar and La Jolla.

Now the not so good. Have you ever been locked in the bathroom? Seriously, had someone not been with me to help open the door, I would have been sleeping in the bathtub. Whoever designed the sliding pocket doors (and whoever is responsible for maintaining the sliding pocket doors) should have their own level of purgatory. We learned not to ever fully close the door, thus providing a handhold for any kind exit.

When complaining at the front desk, another another guest related that he had the same problem. Maintenance provided some relief, but just barely.

It's not easy to correct faulty pocket doors. But come on Hilton, bite the bullet and fix the doors.

The only other (minor) complaint is the lack of an in-room safe. We are not comfortable have to put our electronic devices in our car trunk when we leave the room.

Room Tip: Obviously, check the sliding pocket door. Despite requesting a specific location (upper floor, rear...

Me & my wife stayed here this past weekend, we were beyond pleased with service at this hotel. Staff is very accommodating and friendly. They provided us with such wonderful hospitality every encounter, we will definitely recommend this hotel to our friends and will be staying here again without a doubt! Love the location, the staff, and the cookies!

Customers service is all talk. No service is the pool area from the bar or restaurant. It took 3 requests to get service. Elevators did not work from the 3 floor. On one day both were under repair at the same time. When they did work, we found staff used lobby elevators as freight elevator to haul laundry, and other operational items. We even had the concierge ask the elevator full of guests, if it was ok that he make a stop in the basement before they went to their respective floors. I general stay at DBLTree, but this one needs help.

We stayed here with our 2 children and were very happy with our stay. The rooms are nice, updated and clean. I have nothing negative to say. The kids LOVED the pool area. The staff was very helpful and provided excellent customer service. I would definitely book here again on my next trip to San Diego.

This is a very pleasant hotel. The front desk staff are always courteous and friendly. And of course we love the chocolate cookie we are presented with at check-in. This is our hotel of choice when in the Del Mar area!

We stayed here for two nights while visiting our son. The room was clean and new with a beautiful pool view. The bed was very comfortable and the room had blackout drapes to facilitate sleeping in, or naps. There was no refrigerator. (If we had had leftovers, I wouldn't have been happy about that.) There is only one sink and mirror. We like to have two so that we can get ready in parallel but we made it work. The room is decorated with beautiful photos from the San Diego area. That's a nice touch. The windows do open a little, if you want some outside air.

The bar and breakfast areas are very nice with a pool view. Although the breakfast wasn't included, it is a decent value for the area. I got an omelet with ham, mushrooms and cheese the first day. This was a premium omelet with fresh mushrooms, Black Forest ham and lots of cheddar cheese. My husband got the Del Mar breakfast (eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes). He felt this was no better than what he would have gotten on the buffet. The next day he got the buffet and liked it better. There were two kinds of eggs, one of which had cheese. The bacon and sausage were cooked better than the previous day. The oatmeal was perfectly made and had a lot of toppings. The granola was good with very cold milk and the fruit was fresh and ripe. That second day I got the Dungeness eggs Benedict. These were perfectly cooked and the sauce was not overly rich - it was a nice twist on hollandaise. The crab was fresh but it was small shredded pieces, not the lumps of Dungeness that I expected. I still ate all the eggs, crab and sauce. The muffins were soggy so I just ate around the edges of those. I still considered the dish a success.

The fitness center has two treadmills, three ellipticals, a recumbent bike, a ball, and dumbbells. There are no weight machines, which is think was a good decision. The gym designer put in two benches and two mats. If you have ever tried to work out in a gym with just one and you aren't alone, you'll know this is a good thing. Filtered water is available in the gym, so you can stop by and fill your water bottle. In addition to visiting the gym we made to easy 5 minute drive to the beach to run each day. The first day we went to Torrey Pines State Beach. This run is 3 miles up hill to Torrey Pines Golf Course, past the driving range. Then 3 miles back down. There is limited traffic on the road. Bathrooms are available at the bottom, and there is a port-a-potty you can use near the trail at the driving range at the top. The views from the run are fantastic! The second day we ran on the beach from Power House Park to Torrey Pines Beach. This is a flat 2.5 mile run on very firm sand with bathrooms at both ends. I usually don't like beach running, but this sand is very very fine and packed near the water line.

This hotel has fire pits outside near the pool and bar area. It was very nice to sit out there at night and view the full moon. By day the pool was hopping with families and looked very nice. The outdoor eating area is available all day and also very nice. We liked the bar with attentive service and a view of the pool. It was a nice place to hang out before dinner.

One thing you should know is that this hotel makes a big deal about these cookies. We checked in and stayed for over a day and were never offered any of those. Finally, when our son was with us, I asked in the lobby about the mysterious cookies which were much heralded but not in evidence. They keep them in a drawer in the lobby and you have to ask for them. Now you know, ;-)
