Owner description: The San Diego Museum of Man is your museum! Join the hundreds of thousands of people each year who come to see its exhibits on beer, monsters, torture, race, human and primate evolution, and more. You can also experience one of most important ancient Egyptian collections in the United States, which includes authentic Egyptian mummies, an exceptionally rare child sarcophagus, and one of the world's few surviving examples of Nefertiti's cartouche. Also, for the first time in 80 years, we are now offering guided tours of the California Tower - one of San Diego's most iconic landmarks. Tower tour tickets are timed like theater tickets, so be sure to purchase tickets in advance to secure your desired date and time.

“Nothing spectacular, but great if you have kids”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Very good museum to visit if you have kids, but otherwise, it is very average. Most of their collection are replicas, and a lot is done in such a way that defeats the purpose of visiting a museum - you might as well explore all that from a computer through the Internet. The "Instruments of Torture" special exhibit, for which they charge extra, is nice, and recommended, but somewhat small. It literally fits in one long hall. Still, educational and original.

“Pretty good little museum”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

The Museum of man has really good exhibits. We particularly enjoyed the permanent exhibits covering primate and hominid evolution. Most of the exhibits in the hominid exhibition are casts and they are interactive allowing you to touch the exhibits. This is a great way to teach and engage young visitors. We also enjoyed the temporary exhibition on beer!

“Pricey but kind of interesting”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Enjoyed a short visit to this kind of quirky anthropology museum. My favorite part by far was the off-to-the-side display giving the inside stories on 20 of the museum's more unusual pieces (some of which were quite modern).

The massive pre-Columbian stella (reproductions) were interesting, and I enjoyed the sections on pottery making and basket weaving. But it was an expensive ticket for a museum that, even for a sign-reader and display studier like me, really only merited an hour's visit.

“It's nice, won't blow your mind”

The museum is nice, there's was a "torturing tools" exhibition when I was there which was nice, they also have huge Maya statues there.
In general, the museum is OK, nothing more.

“uhg. Terribly disappointing.”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

I was really looking forward to this museum when I heard about it. I bought the Balboa Park passport and this was one of the included museums, but entry did not include the exhibit on torture which would have cost an additional $15. (This seemed weird/crazy high to me since regular adult admission is $12.50 w/o torture exhibit or $20 with. So, it seems that the torture exhibit add-on to the passport ticket should only cost $7.50)

The exhibits were really disappointing, they try to use video/audio clips to augment displays but it seemed like several were broken. We went to play with the archeological dig sand box and the brush fell apart in my hand. The Egyptian exhibit is tucked away in a small room & was under renovation which left half of the room empty and covered with tools. My husband was not impressed by the museum employee in the Egyptian room that was too busy checking her Facebook on her phone to look up/greet visitors.
