Owner description: Museum's emphasis is on the history of flight, from the days of hot-air balloons to the Spirit of St. Louis to today's space shuttles.

We have taken our grandsons here several times when they are visiting us. Our oldest grandson is a WWII buff and just loves this place. When we went this week, he was my personal docent and described the planes and how they were used in battles etc. There is a play area for smaller children, a restaurant on the deck, and a 4D movie. The movie changes so ask before you see it if it is appropriate for young children. This week's choices of 4D air battles etc would probably have frightened a preschooler etc. Sometimes the animated cartoon is available which is fine for all ages. I like the PSA exhibit which includes a display of the flight attendant uniforms. We also went to the Ripley's exhibit which is always kitchy and fun. (It costs $5.)

they have beautifully blended rare photographs, airplanes, lifesize wax models, aviation and food.
must visit if you have a leisurely evening in San Diego.
There is a 4D sound and effect movie theatre showcasing 3-4 short movies/docus that is worth the watch

Both my husband and I are in our 30s and we felt like kids again in this museum. They have a fantastic collection of original and recreation air and space craft. The displays are really well set up giving context for the air/space craft on display. The museums in Balboa Park (there are about 10) can get quite expensive. We visited this on and the Museum of Man and tickets were about $20/adult. There are also additional paid exhibits within the museums (approx $5 per person). You can buy a park pass, if you are going to be here for a few days and are planning on visiting more than three museums this may be the cheaper way to do it. This museum was great value for money though and we had a blast.

Went to this museum because it also had Ripley's exhibition going on, spend > 3 hrs easily there with beautiful planes (original and replicas), but also seeing the return pod of the Apollo 9 was impressive. Even the young ones enjoyed as well as my wife, reluctantly going in with us.
Too bad we did not have more time to see another museum at Balboa park.

Great simulations and loved the ability to sit inside the aircraft and take pictures! The kids had fun and the adults in our group appreciated the history lesson.
