Extremely Disappointing - Lots Wrong, They Let Me Leave
I'm a Marriott Gold Elite member. I booked this place for 3 nights at $220-ish/night. Kind of high, but oh well. Was in town for the NCAA tournament games. Was hardly going to be in the room due the day long games 2 days, the other days hanging in the gaslamp watching the games with group of friends.
Entering the room, several disappointments- funny smell, several lights/bulbs not working- ALL bulbs are fluorescent, I get it, but not one light in the room was a regular bulb, and the light effect of all these bulbs combined with the dark areas due to no lights made the room very poorly lit whether all/most on for bright, or just one or two for mood/task lighting.
Between the smell, the lighting, very small sink top area and mediocre shower water pressure ... all equated to not too great a room/stay experience. Also, they called this room a suite, the picture of this class of room on their website showed a nice suite with a separate bedroom with a door that close off from the rest of the unit. This was nothing like this, it WAS NOT a suite by my definition. The fold out sofabed was just across from the foot of the bed, NOT in a separate space. So I felt misled. They are selling rooms they are calling suites that are NOT suites and charging a higher price for that.
A friend was staying down the street at the Omni, had an extra room open for the last 2 nights of my stay at a GREAT savings, $90/night less. I went to the front desk three times - upon checking in, early the next morning, and once later in the morning to explain my lower/other option at the Omni- which by the way I would learn is a SPECTACULAR hotel, much nicer than this Residence Inn- and asked if they could, not meet the price, but do something to lower my rate- could they do ANYTHING at all, maybe meet me halfway-ish reduce my rate by say $40-$45/night, and if they wouldn't, I couldn't justify the higher price. All 3 times, they declined. They were polite but firm, gave reasons about "the system" wouldn;t allow them to lower the price. Then, what irked me was, they proceeded to tell me how great their hotel was, comparing their "great" hotel while kind of running down the Omni.
I asked all 3 times when declined on even considering doing anything about my rate to speak to a manager. On all 3 occasions, I was told there was no manager onsite. So at 5:15 when I checked in, at 8:15 in the next morning, and then as I checked out at 9:45-ish, there was never a manager onsite. The first 2 times, I told them, very nicely, that if I didn't get a lower rate for the final 2 nights of my stay, I was going to have to check out.
They let me leave.
I WONT ever be staying here again, and will be sure to let my many friends and colleagues that are Marriott Rewards members to avoid this property.
By the way, I got a spectacular room at the Omni, much nicer than I had at the Res Inn. Corner room, windows on 2 sides, 1 side lokking right down on Petco Park- which I LOVED, and the other looking at the beautiful SD skyline. I was looking at nothing at the Res Inn, the room was interior and very dark and kind of depressing comparatively speaking. Also, WAY better amenities and tremendously friendly experience. The only realy friendly Res Inn employees were the valet parking guys when I checked in and out. They were awesome, they guy that received me when I pulled the car remembered my name the 2 other times we saw each other. Maybe they should be working the front desk, they seemed brighter, nicer and better at their jobs.
It was a bummer to miss out on the Marriott points for those 2 nights, but hey, now I have some Omni points and will start to look Omnis when I travel, especially on my own dime. ,
