Navy Lodge San Diego
Reviewed 15 June 2010

We came to SD to see my son come in to port on the Carl Vinson. The lodge was a great place ot stay and has the best staff, very friendly and helpful. The room we had was great, it had a nice kitchenette and very comfy beds with lots of nice pillows. Would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a nice clean quiet place to sleep, and a nice little kitchen to cook in also. I should also mention that they serve a very nice contiental breakfast also.

Have not seen any reviews on this lodge so here goes. First of all you have to be active duty, retired, DOD, or a dependent of of these mentioned to use this facility. San Diego Naval Base is extremely large base. The lodge is located near the new Base Exchange (BX), new commissary and new strip mall. It is a three minute walk to these places. Additionally the lodge is located at the 32nd Street gate entrance. You need military ID to get on the base. If you fly into San Diego and not planning on renting a car you can go to the USO at the airport. They can provide you with shuttle service to the base. If you are active duty it is free. If not it is 10 dollars a person. Not a bad deal. Once you arrive at the base you can take trolley outside the gate. It can take you downtown, uptown, and even to Tijuana (not recommended). You can buy an all day pass that is good for the trolley's and Metro buses. The transportation in San Diego is excellent.
Now for the lodge itself. For two queen beds the cost is $65.00 per night. Two queen beds and a partial kitchen and a roll-out bed it is $78.00 per night. Being you are on a military installation there is no tax on the rooms! The rooms have clean linens, nice furniture, outlets for your laptops, microwave, mini-fridge. There is free parking. Most good hotels will charge a parking fee. You get a free continental breakfast every morning. The breakfast consistes of two types of juices, coffee, danish's, hardboiled eggs, and cereal. No toast though. Well can't have everything. The military strip mall has five or six restaruants in it. KFC, taco bell, chinese, italian, etc. There are safe deposit boxes at the front desk. They are kind of old though. Time for an upgrade on those safes. It does not cost anything to use them. All local calls are free. They do have washers and dryers on both sides of the buildings. No they are not free. The grounds outside the lodge as well as the hallways inside are immaculate. No wild parties or loud noise while we were there. The front desk can provide you with maps of San Diego, trolly and bus maps. There are plenty of brochures of places to visit located near the front desk. At the BX they have a place to purchase tickets at a military discounted rate. Active duty can go to some of these places for free.

Bottom line. If you are on a budget and traveling with a family, or perhaps retired on a limited pension this place is definitly for you. They even sell shirts with the Navy Lodge logo. It is recommend you make advance reservations to guarantee a room.
