Ramada Gaslamp Convention Center
Ranked #164 of 286 Hotels in San Diego
Reviewed 2 December 2013

From the moment you walk into the lobby and are greeted by gorgeous chandeliers and art deco stained glass, there is no doubt this hotel is from a different era. As with most historic hotels, you sacrifice some of the modern conveniences. The elevator is original, sliding gate and all, but slow. The rooms are on the smaller side, but the thick walls and cozy design make up for it. There is a 24 hour bar/restaurant attached, which has good food. The rooftop offers a great view of the city. This hotel is in the heart of the Gaslamp district, so it can be noisy at night. It wasn't bad enough to keep me up/wake me up, but is something of which to be aware. I would definitley stay here again. The staff was excellent...very nice and helpful.

I would imagine that this hotel would be great for someone who wanted to stay close to everything and not have to pay the high prices of the hotels by the convention center. To use it as a base for days full of fun and sightseeing would be perfect. However, as someone who was there for a convention, I would not recommend for a business traveler. The hotel was built 100 years ago, and while it adds to the atmosphere, things that would be charming to the recreational traveler were annoying after a long day of standing at a trade show. The elevators were incredibly slow (I know that they were the world's fastest when they were built, but by today's standards they're glacial- I would take the stairs down from the 6th floor because it was quicker), the rooms are very small with no place to stretch out other than the bed (there was one chair, but it was not there for comfort), and the "workspace" was directly underneath the television, meaning that I was about 8" away from the TV when I was working. Additionally, the WiFi was painfully slow, and the password was changed a few times throughout my stay, so I would have to continually call the desk to get an updated password. They advertised that they had a fitness center, but the one on site was literally one treadmill and one elliptical shoved into a storage closet. They did have an agreement with a gym in the area, but it was 6 blocks away, which was completely prohibitive for someone wanting to get in a quick workout before starting their work day. None of these things would have mattered to me in the least had I been there on a pleasure trip- they would have actually been a very welcome and interesting change from the cookie-cutter chain hotel rooms that I'm used to. However, for business, I would recommend one of the convention center hotels, even at the higher price.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the street. I had a room facing the street and had a fairly decent view. Som...

Dear Guest, Thank you for your honest observations . We do have some larger suites, but more of our rooms are on the small side. We are definitely not a big box convention hotel. We wish you the best in your travels

Also known as The Ramada St. James, I loved the retro feel of this hotel. Walking into the lobby, I felt like I should've had my flapper dress on to attend a party for the rich and famous. I especially loved the elevator with the sliding gate. There is also a great view from the rooftop of the hotel., and it is close to all the downtown activities. The room was clean, though a little on the small size. I hear this hotel is suppose to be haunted, but we unfortunately didn't experience any hauntings.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts . The hotel is 100 years old so I'm sure over time some spooky things have happened here. The hotel was built the year the Titanic sank . The movie was filmed just 20 miles to the south in Mexico and the film makers rented the restaurant for two days to cast all the extras for the movie. Folks were lined up around the block and once inside for their "audition" tried on hats and long gloves and costumes . It was a big event . At the time we never knew just how big the movie would be ...after all we knew the ending ..;} .I wish we would have taken photographs of the event .

It's an older hotel, but it's the best bang for your buck. Beware the elevators, because they still have the sliding gate and it's takes forever...if you're looking for quiet at night then this spot is definitely not for you. It's right by tons of restaurants, bars, lounges and clubs, which are just around the corner.

Dear guest , We are in the heart of all the action . Our advertisements used to say "for directions to the Gaslamp walk out the front door" . If you're here on the weekend and looking for quiet ,we're probably not your first choice . Hope to see you again .
