“Episode out of COPS”
Reviewed 23 February 2009

We picked this motel because of the price and location to the trolley station. We knew it was a low budget hotel, but planned to do so much sight seeing that we only needed somewhere to sleep at the end of the day.

The hotel was located under about 4 highways/roads and also bordered the train tracks. I was worried that we wouldn't be able to sleep well, but at night it got much quieter except for our neighbors antics.

Unbeknownst to us our neighbor was a recovering drug addict that stayed up late at night. First night was okay, but second night she got in a fight with her boyfriend over $40 and she called the cops on him. The boyfriend had left by the time to cops arrived, but we got to listen to her tell her life story and embellish her boyfriends misdeeds to cops for about an hour. The next night she spent on her phone yelling at her boyfriend and then of course he finally returned to her place so they could continue to argue the final night we were there. Why didn't we leave, well we only had one day left before returning home.

The second problem was the carpet smelled like wet dog. I bought a bottle of Fabreeze and used about 3/4 of it to fix the problem. Other smaller problems is that the shower wouldn't turn off all the way (but maintence did fix the next day), we only recieved 2 new clean towels each day, there was no alarm clock in the room and the streets around the area were poorly lit.

I just imagined I was visiting another country and it helped me get by. Only stay here if you really need a place. Other than that it is worth it to spend $50 more to stay somewhere a little quieter and safer.

After reading some of the other comments I will be sure to check and make sure that our credit cards are properly charged.

The E-Z 8 was average at best. The carpet was dirty and there were some flies in the room that somehow we could not get rid of. My wife was not given her atm card back by the employee at the front desk and soon enough there were 5 charges for $300 on the card. The hotel is a bit noisy because of the freeway and also some train noise. There was a drunk homeless person on the grass in the entrance. I was up every hour on the hour worrying about the safety of my vehicle outside of my door. For a little more money you can stay at other hotels near by and have piece of mind.

Stayed at hotel so we could quickly get to San Diego airport for a very early flight. Room was clean and front desk staff very helpful.

Wouldn't want to stay for more than a night. Location looked a little rough but overall not too bad. Very close to train tracks. You can hear them rumbling through the area.

Just a note if you decide to stay be sure to bring your hair dryer. Rooms are very basic.

The first thing you see when you find the hotel is that it is surrounded by several overpasses! In fact, one portion of the hotel actually has an overpass as its' second roof! Then, you hear the train blow its' horn and start to triple guess your decision to book there!

First stop, the office.....great people! Very friendly and resourceful. As we made our way to our room, you can't help but notice that even though you're smack dab in the middle of several highways, the noise is minimal! (Except for the occasional whistle blowing train!)

We all expected a wakeful night ahead, however; when we got into the rooms, we were pleasantly surprised! They had recently been remodeled, smelled and looked clean and when the door was closed, the noise was limited.

This hotel had the most comfortable beds that we had ever slept on at a hotel! There is no shampoo, hair dryers, alarm clocks and all the other little extras, but we did have a refrigerator.

If you are squimishy about hookers, you'll need to know that a bus from one of the local "strip clubs" makes a stop at the hotel! We watched them walk through the parking lot, head to a room and depart with some male clients. However; not once did the "ladies" address any of the males hanging outside their rooms or at the pool. It appears they are by appointment only?!

Our night was not disturbed by highway noises or train horns. I've had a lot noiser rooms in higher class hotels! And again, the beds were very comfortable which assisted with the peaceful night's rest!

If cleanliness, convenience and affordable prices are at the top of your list, then you should not have a problem with this hotel!

I was a bit apprehensive about staying here as it seemed so cheap, but we were travelling down the coast and looking to save cash wherever we could so we had money to do stuff on our trip. Check in were so helpful and nice and to our surprise the room was clean and well furnished. My only moan would be at no hairdryer in the room. We took a taxi into town (not expensive set price of 16 dollars, and reception called it for us) to go to the Gaslamp area. We were able to drive to Sea World in around 8 minutes from the motel, and we walked up to the Old Town. Please don't be put off by its location, save money and spend it in a nice restaurant in town!

This is a very basic, inexpensive hotel. Good deals are hard to find in San Diego. The room was perfectly clean and in very good condition, as was the grounds and pool. It is an easy walk to Old Town and the Trolley Station, and there is a very good breakfast / lunch restaurant (Perry's) across the street. Looks like there may have been some military personnel staying here on shore leave but they were quiet and respectful / friendly. The only drawback is the train tracks immediately adjacent. The trolley is not a problem but the Amtrak commuter trains woke us up a little before 6 am blowing their horns.

OK, bad stuff out of the way first: the clientele is pretty sketchy--many of the guests appear to have left by 3AM or so, except for the long term construction workers who basically live here. The immediate neighborhood, even some of the staff are a bit intimidating if you're faint of heart. If you're espeically sensitive to noise, think twice. It's under a freeway. Literally under a freeway. With the doors and windows closed, I've never heard a sound, nor has my girlfriend who occasionally joins me here.

Now, the good stuff: Oh my lord, is it cheap. And guess what--once you lock the door and close the curtains, the rooms are as nice or nicer than anywhere else in town up to twice the price. It really is an $80 room for around $35. Most rooms have been remodeled (try the north building upstairs) and are in great shape. The beds are comfy, and on a 1-10 cleanliness scale, they're an 8. The location is very central--walk easily to the trolley or Old Town, not quite as easily to Target / grocery stores, etc. I am in SD for business 2 weeks out of every month, and never rent a car.

I'd highly recommend the hotel for anyone who isn't afraid the dark, doesn't leave expensive things in their car, and likes a heck of a bargain.
