“Valentines Day!”
Reviewed 19 February 2014 via mobile

I stayed here Valentine's Day weekend and our stay was very pleasant. I proposed to my fiancee this weekend and the restaurant manager Jose provided excellent customer service. We communicated a day before I arrived and he assisted with preparations ....reserved a cabana for us on rooftop....had dozen roses ordered as I requested waiting for us in the cabana. He also arranged for chef to draw "Would You Marry Me" on her dessert. While we were having dinner.....he went to our room and set uo wine glasses and wine and he lit the 8 candles that I brought and she was blown away when qe made it back to our room after dinner

Fabulous weekend.......and by the way...... she said yes!!

Thx for a memorable weekend.

I stayed at the W Hollywood before and kind of expected the same thing. Not so much. The front desk staff is friendly...but come across as flighty. They smile but seem to have very little substance. The hallways and elevators are dark like a frat house and the lobby has more glam than a drag queen. The bed is comfortable. The shower has no curtain...just a piece of glass with a round circle for your towel. When you read this it may sound like I don't like the hotel. I actually do. It is kind of like rubbernecking at a car accident. You have no idea why you are attracted to looking at it. I would stay here again and recommend it to others as well....but it's still weird.

Hi Richard,

We offer a different vibe than W Hollywood. They are a little louder, while we are more subdued. Dont get me wrong though. We know how to throw a good party. You'll have to come back and take another look. We always have a lot going on. Grab a cocktail and relax.

See you soon,
Michael O.

Stayed here for two nights on a business trip. The hotel room was very comfortable and clean, but it felt a little run-down. The lobby seemed to be under construction and is weirdly configured without a lot of space. The bar is very nice and the service we received was excellent, as was the bar food.

I was working in my room one of the mornings, so when I went out for lunch, I removed the do not disturb sign but housekeeping didn't come, so that was a bit off-putting.

It wasn't super memorable, all in all.

Hey there,

We are in a great location for business travelers being in the heart of downtown. If you step out and would like your room cleaned, please give us a call at Whatever/Whenever and we will send someone up right away.

I'm glad to hear you had a chance to check out the Living Room and Rooftop Bar. Both underwent a 5 million dollar renovation about a year ago. No construction here.

I hope we can welcome you back soon.

Best,
Michael O.

Located in the downtown area with no parking. Valet is $30 per night. Funky hotel that could use an update. Rooms are small, as are the baths. No tub in our room only a small shower.
Halls smell like carpet sanitizer. Bed and bedding we the best part of our stay. Too many good hotels in San Diego to settle on this one unless you just have to be downtown.

Room Tip: Corner room is probably but you should look at the rooms first.

Hi there,

Thanks for taking the time to provide some feedback on your stay. We are perfectly located in the heart of downtown, while still being within walking distance of popular spots like Little Italy and Gaslamp Quarter. Our valet parking is very affordable for the area. Our bedding is definitely infamous.. You can actually get it in the W Hotels online store if you want to bring a little of us into your home. We hope to welcome you back soon.

Best,
Michael O.

When you book this hotel, I highly recommend you request cool corner, you get more space, corner with tons of windows. Not only that, the bathroom is bigger, it has a tub AND a shower. Great reading knook, of course you get to take advantage of the lobby amenities.

Room Tip: Ask for Cool Corner.

Hello!

The Cool Corner suite is also my favorite room. I see the allure there - lots of space, the tub, the natural light. It has it all. The Living Room is a great spot to grab a few drinks, play some games and lounge night away. If you're an early riser, grab a cup of coffee or tea. If you need anything else, just ask.

See you next time,
Michael O.

Really like the W chain and this one is no exception. If you've been to one, you know what to expect. If you haven't, you should look at that first. In this hotel in particular, we found the room quirky and not well thought out. We were upgraded to a bigger, corner room. There was very little storage space. Very poor lighting in and around the closet (which was isolated near the door in a small hallway). The bathroom was poorly laid out, with the tissues and garbage can across the room from the sink. Not enough towel bars and hooks. The room looks great, but it should be much more functional. We got by, had a great trip, and had fun there. Someone should have the management live in the room for a week like we did.

Hi there,

I'm glad to see you enjoyed your stay with us and that we could upgrade you to a Cool Corner Suite. These definitely offer more space than our Wonderful Room, so you can make yourself at home for your week long stay. On your next visit with us, ask about our Insider Meagan Guy. She will be glad to get you some recommendations for must see spots.

All the best,
Michael O.

The W San Diego is desperately in need of a makeover. They have updated most of the common areas but the guest rooms, halls and bathrooms are very dingy and dated. The carpet in my room was very soiled and stained, the furnishings tired and nicked, but the bed was up to W standards and was very comfortable. The bathrooms are bad - dirty, small, & dated.

Other warnings? Gym is tiny and sort of a joke (shame because they have a lot of weird spaces on that level were they could expand it.) The pool is about the size of two hot tubs…not at all useful. And the location is not optimal – sort of on the fringe of downtown and near what appears to be the big area for homeless people. (Not safe for single women to walk around at nigh.)

Anything good? The service is quite good. They are young and energetic and aim to please. The dining room was quite good for breakfast and the lobby is hip and stylish. (Weather was too cold to use roof bar but it looks very nice).

Given the other options in San Diego – including several other Starwood options if that’s important – I’d avoid the W until they renovate the guest areas.

Hi there,

Thank you for your comments. We recently updated all the public areas like The Living Room and Rooftop Bar, all of which look amazing and inviting. Take a seat and enjoy a handcrafted cocktail from our skilled bartenders or grab a bite in Kelvin. While our guestrooms aren't as new, we are always taking steps toward improving. If you ever need anything at all to improve your stay, just ask. Our friendly and attentive talent will be glad to bring it right up.

I hope we can welcome you back soon.

Best,
Michael O.
