“Excellent Hotel -- An Extra Note About Value For Conferences”
Reviewed 14 March 2011

The other reviews do well to describe the great quality of the hotel. I wanted to add that I was staying at the Solamar for a conference at the convention center. The hotel is about a 4 block walk to the convention center -- very close. Plus the room rates were about 30% below the so-called conference hotels. So if you are considering staying at the Hotel Solamar for a conference at the convention center, I highly recommend that you do so.

Oh, and Lounge6 is a pretty sweet rooftop lounge.

I stayed 3 nights in January for a business trip. It was truly a wonderful hotel as many reviewers described. The location was great, close to downtown business district; and restaurants in the Gaslamp District. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Friendly staff and great service. I will definitely recommend this hotel.

This is a comfortable, elegant yet unstuffy hotel. Friendly, helpful staff, beautiful, comfortable rooms, excellent on-site dining and close to so much. Loved every moment of our stay.

Stayed at Hotel Solamar for a weekend with a group of friends. Great Pool area and bar and very nice rooms and bathroom. Location was fantastic, once we had parked the car it didn't move until we left.

After a LOUSY night in a B&B, we moved to our old faithful boutique chain, Kimpton. The Solamar did not disappoint. Our room overlooked the city and the rooftop pool & bar area. Love the decor, cleanliness, all the niceties we've come to expect from Kimpton. The staff generally are very knowledgeable and helpful. I did come across one confused desk clerk when we first tried to check in. We came at checkout time without a reservation. We asked to see a few rooms, not to decide if we wanted to stay there, but to decide WHICH room we preferred. She told me to go over to the reservation phone and make a reservation. WTH?? Anyway, we went to lunch and came back after the checkout crowd was gone, as well as the confused desk clerk. After that, everything was fabulous!!!

This was my first visit to San Diego..I wanted to stay in the gaslamp district and was drawn to hotel solamar's positive reviews.I stayed 4 nights in a standard room with my girlfriend.. it seemed big enough and she brought a lot of stuff. The bed is very comfy
. Shower is awesome.great pressure and hot... liked the shampoo and liquid soap dispensers in the shower.

My cons are minor. The gym has 2 treadmills and is tiny. Not a huge deal because one can usually run outside there anyhow. The walls are somewhat thin. Parking is 35 dollars a day..but I knew that going in

A big tip is to often recheck the rates.. initially I was locked in at 159 on the hotel website... eventually found it for 126 on Orbitz. Also.. one can often get h.s on hotwire.. I got it for 102 a nite..look for 4 star in gaslamp 95 percent positive reviews with a pool.

I would probably give solamar 4,5/5 stars.. can't do 5 stars because for me to give 5 I have to be blown away.

But for value..hard to beat.

My honey planned my birthday holiday at the Solamar's Master Suite with "Kuji Soak Tub". The great location is a walking distance to Petco Park, the Convention Center, the Red Car, and Gaslamp District. Our suite had awesome views of the city, Point Loma, and the Coronado Bay Bridge. Complemtary wine and snacks is served in the lobby at 6 p.m. but get there early if you want a seat. There is a nice roof top lounge, but due to bad weather (rain and COLD), there were no takers that weekend. The staff was excellent and helpful and they cater to VIPs (Very Important Pets). They also prove thick leopard pattern robes. The highlight of my trip was soaking in the tub with candles and champagne while watching the rain and enjoying the skylight of San Diego. This is our first stay in a "trendy" hotel and while it's not our thing (we perfer historic/old skool hotels) it was a very nice treat. The downside: You'll have to either order room service for coffee ($5 for a cup) or get your own in the lobby as there is NO in-room coffee pot -a shame for paying $300 a night. The couch was uncomfortable, and there is a $35 per night validated car park. Although the bathroom was outstanding and had the best view of the city, the mirror had streaks on it and the shower is in need of a good scrubdown as it was very slippery. The sink was not practical as water splashed all over yourself, the counter and the mirror. Sadly, our trendy sink had a large crack on the rim and I figure it was caused by a guest that did not have morning Cup of Joe :)
