“Clean, modern hotel”

I just returned from the hotel and had a very nice stay here. The rooms are very spacious and the beds are quite comfortable. They offer a complimentary coffee bar every morning and a wine reception every evening. The location is central to shops and restaurants. The pool and bar on the fourth floor are alot of fun. The only complaint I have is the very poor water pressure in the shower. I know they are trying to conserve water, but when it takes two to three times as long to rinse the shampoo from your hair, it kind of defeats the purpose.

This hotel is a little different from most with a somewhat more edgy decor, but otherwise it is a typical above-average 4 star hotel. The location, on the edge of the Gaslamp district, is very convenient. The staff were helpful. The rooms were very good; my only complaints were the pressure from the shower head and the fact that there was no separate shower. Adjacent restaurant was excellent.

This was my second time at a Kimpton property and I must say they have a nice track record going. Love the hotel and room decor. Service is always the pampered, kind, courteous treatment I think we would all love from every travel related chain. Free wine in the evenings, flexibility to get you whatever you or to wherever you need to go. I am typically wary of posters who are this positive about a place, but, I can't imagine any of what I have written above to be hyperbole.

We booked this hotel through Virgin holidays as it was the best price we could find.
The hotel is great. Ths staff were all fab and friendly, the rooms were very clean and to a high standard and the free wine hour everyday is spot on.
We had a room overlooking the pool, but as the bar closes at 12 it was never a problem to us. The atmosphere around the pool and bar area at night was great.
The location is also ideal if you are looking at being near all the bars and restaurants in the city.

My husband and I booked the Solamar for a one night escape from our kids. It did not fail us in that respect. The decor was contemporary and inviting. The hotel is close to everything downtown...within walking distance. We even had an awesome view of Petco park from our room. The Gaslamp quarters night life is vibrant and offers a good diversion if that's what you're looking for.

What we didn't care for was the hard bed and the annoyed desk help who didn't appreciate that we paid our parking fee in cash. (He seemed put out that we didn't want to put it on our credit card.) The parking rate was a little steep ($32) but was worth it when the other alternative was parking in the open lot across the street.

Overall, the experience was very good. We wish we could have stayed more than one night...maybe next time.

  • Liked — I enjoyed the overall feel of the hotel and the wine reception.
  • Disliked — The hard bed and annoyed desk help.

Stayed at the solomar aug 25th - aug 28th 2008.

Very nice, and clean 4star hotel which deserves 4 stars!

The mood and lighting is very sombre in the public area's, and the check in girls are very pretty (for us guys!!!)

The room was very nice, and the bathroom rocked.

The only down side is the pool area. The area itself is absolutely great, but I think they have pool parties, and sometimes after a hard day all you want to do is pop down the pool at 4pm have a lay and have a swim, but you kinda feel a little out of place walking through with your towel and shorts, when everyones dressed up and stood at the bar listening to loud music! But this didn't deter me

  • Liked — rooms were great!
  • Disliked — the typical californian pool scene!

My boyfriend and I stayed here over Labor Day weekend and I wouldn't say it was the best place we've stayed but it wasn't the worst. We stayed at a couple Kimpton hotels in Seattle and were very impressed so we were looking forward to Hotel Solamar. Compared to the hotels in Seattle this was a notch down. The bed was good, but not as comfy as the others. The TV wasn't as nice and neither was the bathroom. The blinds were almost impossible to open and close and obviously we weren't the only ones who had trouble with them as the bar you pull on was broken.

Over the weekend the pool was THE place to party. There was a DJ and tons of people everywhere. Which is fine if you're into that, we were just hoping for a more laid back atmosphere. On Monday the bar was closed during the day and we were able to have a very relaxing time by the pool.

I would say if you're in your 20's or 30's and looking for a party, stay here on the weekend. If you're not, stay here during the week.

And if you get a room facing the pool bar get ready to hear the music.

  • Liked — The pool area when it was quiet
  • Disliked — The pool area when it was packed
