I consider myself to be a cupcake snob so I was really excited to try the cupcakes from this well known bakery. Eh. I had two cupcakes, chocolate lavender and the german chocolate, both were disappointing. The combination of chocolate and lavender was a strange pairing, some may like it but I did not. The german chocolate was just okay, average. There were plenty of other items at the bakery so I look forward to sampling those but I will not buy cupcakes from here again.

This is all what a bakery should be. The breads are so good that, even though I have been here 8-10 times over the past 7 years, I've never gotten past ordering just bread and coffee. They do have good looking desserts and I see people carrying things out of there in boxes. It is in the middle of Hillcrest, a sleepy used bookstore district turned into an urban center with restaurants interspersed with bars, hat shops, a few remaining book stores, etc. Bread & Cie has some seating inside as well as seating out on the front sidewalk which brings you in direct contact with the numerous humanity that walks past as well as buses, ambulances, and police cars. It's a fantastic place to people (and dog) watch. So, in sum, the ambiance may not be for everyone but the bread (quality and variety) is absolutely first class.

If you love bread as much as I do...! You can eat at the cafe, but you'll find their bread at grocery stores such as Ralph's, which is where I bought a loaf a day for three weeks. Flavorful, divine texture, great crust.

Patronized the bakery four times during a visit to San Diego, three breakfasts and an afternoon treat. Five of the six baked items we had for breakfasts that were based on a dough were scrumptious. Probably the best was the bear claw, though the almond croissant, cinnamon bun, raisin swirl bun, and apple strudel were great as well. The coconut macaroon treat was good, but not excellent, not overly sweet but also not as flavorful as expected. The slice of a roll stuffed with chocolate of some sort and the peanut butter cookie treat coated with chocolate were both rather ordinary.

Stopped for a quick lunch. Great sandwich selection and plenty of baked goodies. Excellent sandwiches, tasty croissants and scones. Very comfortable and casual. The vast number of goodies we didn't try looked delicious and were extremely tempting! Breakfast menu available.
