“Friendly staff and great location”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

Our family of four stayed for 3 nights at the Marriott Gaslamp Quarter in July and loved the location. It's right across from Petco Park so extremely convenient if you're going to see the Padres play. Lots of great shopping and dining within walking distance. The hotel staff were always accommodating & efficient throughout our stay. We had a little snafu when we checked in as we thought we were getting adjoining rooms but instead got 2 rooms near one another. The manager on duty was quick to address our disappointment and offer an upgrade. This was also the first hotel to ever suggest color coded key cards to differentiate between the room keys for the 2 rooms. It was such a great idea and very helpful when tossing the various keys in our bags and not having them all look alike. We stayed on the Concierge level and the employees were very helpful with local suggestions and maps. The food was good in the Concierge (eggs, bacon & fruit for breakfast and veggies and apps at happy hour) and worth the extra cost. We walked to Basic on 10th Ave for a pizza dinner one night and the pizza was outstanding. When we were headed to the San Diego Zoo, we opted for a taxi and it was a $15 fare each way including tip. It was about a 15 minute ride and very easy to get a taxi at the zoo to take back to the hotel. Definitely check out the Altitude roof lounge in the hotel for great views of Petco Park and the city. If you stay at the hotel, you can access it with kids during the day to check out the views even though it isn't open for food & drink service but at night only ages 21 and older are allowed in. We would definitely stay here again when visiting the San Diego area and loved how easy it was to drive to the airport when heading home.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of Petco park.

Central spot near the ball park, trolley stop restaurants and bars. Can hardly go wrong. Many things to do and see will be going back. The public transport is really good and cheap we got to most places on the trolley. The aircraft carrier is a must see. Just watch out for the bike boys they can over charge be prepared to walk away they will lower there price.

Recently stayed here for a business trip and had an enjoyable stay. Didn't need a car cause there was so much stuff to see within walking distance of hotel. Tons of restaurants near hotel to eat in Gas lamp Quarters area. Staff was friendly when you walked in and at check in. Lounge on top has a great view of San Diego and Petco Park. You can see right into the stadium and watch a game (although you can see outfield but you can clearly the in field). Was in a concierge level room. Room was great as well as view. Only thing I didn't like was the size of the lounge. It is probably the smallest lounge I have ever seen. Seemed like it was only the size of a regular bedroom. Not much seating so you better get there early for breakfast or dinner or be prepared to take back to your room. Other than that, had a great stay in San Diego.

This was the most comfortable hotel during our California road trip. We booked the advance rate and were given a fantastic corner room with amazing views. Staff at reception were friendly and knowledgable. The bar does great margaritas and has a very reasonable happy hour, $4 for wine or beer up until 7pm. The bar staff were also friendly and had good advice as to activities during our short stay. The hotel is in an old 1920's bank and many of the original features have been maintained, including the bank vault which is now a meeting room. It is a beautiful building and doesn't feel like a chain hotel. Other reviewers mentioned paying for wifi, we had free wifi in our rooms and lobby area. Would love to stay here again.

*Keep in mind that this was a surprise stay for me & my girlfriends Anniversary*

One would think that with Altitude Sky Lounge, one of the finest bars in down town San Diego, being located at this hotel, that the rooms would have a modernized design to them. It was quite the opposite, the room had an antiquated feel to it even though it was the higher floor view room that people pay the pretty penny for. If you're looking for a hotel that is somewhat hip, trendy, or fashionable, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

But, don't turn away just yet. There are positive attributes to staying here. The view of petco park from the room is quite remarkable. One could easily watch the game if there was one going on. The view of the bay and surrounding structures lit up at night was also a beautiful sight. Also, the high floor view rooms have a first row seat to the fire works that go off on Saturday nights right behind the convention center which was a nice bonus to staying at this hotel. The down part is that there is a view of a parking structure literally right in front of your window, which isn't very appealing. The beds were heavenly comfortable, the bathrooms were nothing out of the ordinary, the TV had a nice selection of HD channels, and the space was okay. Nonetheless the room was untarnished, comfortable, and had a nice view.

I had very few encounters with any of the staff at the hotel but when I did, they weren't very enthusiastic/lively. Not saying that they weren't welcoming so to speak, but they weren't exactly rhapsodic about their job.

I will say that the exterior of the hotel does not look as good as it does in the night lit photos displayed on various websites and the entrance is somewhat hidden. There are no large signs to let guests familiarize themselves that the hotel they were looking at was the gas-lamp Marriott. If it wasn't for the Soleil @k sign I would not have known the building I was driving by was the hotel I planned to stay at.

There were some nice perks to staying here.
1 Having VIP access to the lounge, which meant no waiting in the long line to get to Altitude. The line was very long.
2. Valet was included in the bill. One younger gentleman made me aware that he would personally take great care of my vehicle, as he noticed that I have put a lot of "work" into it.
3. Free breakfast buffet at Latitude was worth it. Delicious food but a small selection.
4. Mobile check in & check out made it easy to aquire about my room.

One negative experience at the hotel was when we were checking out. It seemed as if everyone had stopped caring since it was our check out day. The person who answers the phone when you use your room phone had stopped calling us by our last names. Valet took longer to get our vehicle, in fact we were standing by the podium for a good 5 minutes before one of the valet attendants had asked if we had already been assisted. Although we had already been helped, it was disappointing that he took so long to ask if we needed help when he'd been standing there for several minutes. Overall the experience at the hotel was a positive one. Although, the price was a bit steep, you are paying for a central down town location.

Room Tip: Get a room with a ball park view.

We are glad you were able to enjoy yourself at Altitude, Latitude, and in the comfort of your room. Awesome location in the Gaslamp Quarter. Newer hotel. As a MR Plat, got upgraded to a really sweet water-side room on top floor. Lounge breakfast was good. Staff was great! Would def stay here again if in SD.

Pitchers mound and home very clear from 20 th floor. We were in room 2002. Too bad there wasn't a game this weekend ! Great views of the landscape from the top floor lounge. The mountains and Coronado were beautiful from the 22nd floor.
