We flew into San Diego and spent one night. I researched several hotels before deciding on this one. It was pricey but definitely worth the full ocean view. The location on the Beach is just slightly north of Crystal Pier and what I feel is nicer /wider part of the boardwalk.

The room itself was very modern. The balcony overlooked the ocean, the boardwalk and Crystal Pier was just to the left. Staff was very friendly and made excellent suggestions. They did not advertise this much but had beach chairs, towels and boogie boards that you could borrow. Went out on boogie boards with the kids ages 11 and 14 and the wavers were awesome. Directly in front of the hotel only surfing is allowed. We walked a few minutes north and there is a swimming only section. We had takeout from World Famous (less than 10 minute walk and highly recommended by the staff) and ordered take out including fish, lobster and shrimp tacos - all delicious, on the balcony of our hotel room. The boardwalk is very crowded in the evening and not a relaxing place to walk if crowded.

The next morning we borrowed the hotel bikes at 6 AM and rode about 2 miles south to Belmont Pier. It was absolutely gorgeous in the morning - very quiet, a few walkers/runners/bikers, and definitely more pleasant than the evening crowd. Based on the recommendations of the front desk, we had breakfast at Broken Yoke (about 1.5 mile drive) which was also excellent.

Overall this was the favorite hotel of our 10 day trip from San Diego to San Francisco due to the location of the hotel, the quality of the room, and the friendliness of the staff, including the check in/check out staff, the concierge who loaned us the beach items, the staff who loaned us the bikes. Also when I called to book a room (and I wanted the ocean view which was not available on line) , the reservation staff found an ocean view, and also gave an AAA discount.

The only drawback is that the bathroom door is a slider which has an opaque panel, so if your kids turn on the bathroom light during the middle of the night it lights up the room like a beacon and wakes up others in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for an full ocean view 3rd floor

We had 3 memorable days at a tower 23. Our bedroom overlooked the beach so we had a perfect view in the evening of watching the sun going down over the sea. The concierge were very hopeful and nothing was too much trouble. It had a very busy bar area and a fabulous restaurant. There was no pool but felt it wasn't needed as we had a big ocean within a few steps. They also offered complimentary use of pedal bikes. All in all, PERFECT

Room Tip: The surf pad rooms are definately the best rooms overlooking the sea

Very nice place to stay in San Diego if you are looking for some fancy place.
The restaurant is amazing too.
Enjoy a ride on the coast. Free rental bikes is available!!! Wifi perfect works! The fireplace is amazing to enjoy the sunset drinking a wine.
I would not recommended it for families w/ kids... The hotel doesn't have a pool or a shower :-(((
The hotel could also carry your chair to the beach... And have a nice shower (20 minutes to wash my hair...).

We booked Tower 23, San Diego for a 3 night stay after reading its great reviews on various boutique web sites. What a HUGE disappointment this stay was. We arrived in Sab Diego eager to enjoy the last 3 days of our 20 day road trip relaxing in a beach hotel and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. We had just completed a long drive from Santa Monica, down PCH 101, through the beautiful coastal views of Orange County. Our hearts sank in disbelieve when our Sat Nav took us through a run down part of town, past several tattoo parlours and delivered us to a not very nice local car park that backed onto Tower 23. We drove to the hotels valet parking area and out first sighting was a huge security guy manning the door and crowds of end of day beach goers coming and going into the hotel bar. Not quite the ambiance we had expected. Ok...maybe it will get better we thought. The check in process was OK, the concierge was literally a hole in the wall with nobody there. Our bags were quickly delivered. The room looked as described but smelt stale and much starker in the flesh. On opening the patio door to let in fresh air, we were greeted by quite rude prolonged stares from the hotel "guests" on the patio area as though they were checking out the new arrivals. The atmosphere was starting to be the dominant factor in making us feel uncomfortable here. Putting our initial concerns to one side we quickly decided to take in the beach area and went for a stroll along what we thought would be a private beach area to the hotel (the hotel is described as being the only hotel in San Diego that is located on the beach). However, the hotel lead directly out to a very busy board walk or pavement, full of end of day beach goers, mainly gangs of teenagers, skate borders, dog walkers, buggy pushers, cyclists. The immediate beach area seemed to be a surfers area and did not compare with Orange County beaches. After 10 mins of taking in tacky shops selling cheap t-shirt and overcrowded bars, we made our way back to the haven of Tower 23. So it seems had the rest of the beach goers. We quickly realised that the hotels description of a private decking and bar area related only to a concrete balcony area with landscaping not seen this side of the 70s and not the hotels main bar and restaurant area which was full and boisterous. Yes, the hotel overlooked the sea and the decking area had obviously been used as the focal point for all the PR shots, but it gave no further benefit to guests other than a view, which could be had anywhere.Trying to get a bit of enthusiasm going, we asked about the wine tasting event that had been set up in decking area. We didn't want to sit in a busy bar or restaurant with 2 kids after a long drive. We went along, paying $20 a glass to sample local wines and to order bar food for our teenage kids. Our teenage kids were again stared at as though they were not welcome and went back to the room after 10 mins and no sign of bar food service. The most charmless man served our wine and after 2 small glasses and having to work our way through awkward looking singletons making small talk, we had had enough. We had 3 unsuccessful attempts at ordering room service. It was very limited in choice and disappointing e.g cheese and crackers, pitta bread and dips. We wanted out last 3 days of our Californian trip to be relaxing and unwinding and sadly, this place felt very much like being at a badly organised 18-30's party. It may be a smart looking hotel with a view, and offer the young locals a feel good factor in an area crying out for more investment but it does not offer the style, service or atmosphere expected of luxury boutique hotel . We checked out the next day and discovered the true beauty of San Diego is so much more than the Tower 23 area of Pacific Beach.

Dear Judith -
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. I'm sincerely sorry that your visit to Pacific Beach did not meet your expectations. I'm happy to hear you were able to find an area that better suited you and your family and I hope the rest of your visit to San Diego was wonderful.

We use each review as a chance to improve. While we think our marketing materials are an accurate reflection of the property, I will use your review as a chance to look them over with a different perspective.

Warmest regards,
Stacy

Tower 23 is fantastic, from start to finish this was one of the best trips my wife and I have ever taken. We had the Sweet Suite, with its stunning ocean view, it was worth every penny. Staff was friendly and helpful, bed was comfortable, food was great. IT would be hard to do better than Tower 23.

I stayed here for six nights in July 2014 as part of a two-month tour of the USA. It was poor value for $410 a night

To be positive, I found the building attractive, light and airy with lovely sunset views. The bed was very comfortable - the best pillows I've ever slept on. The sun deck was well-used by sun-bathers and I did see a couple of small children enjoying the pool, which is a few inches deep.

However, I think Tower 23 is a high-end restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel with a restaurant - but vegetarians, vegans or anyone following a special diet will struggle here and there are there virtually no other options except fast food nearby. Diners crowded the deck most evenings and there was music playing, so it's not a good place to relax with a book at the end of the day. The staff at front of house were friendly in a corporate style. If there was a concierge service, I didn't find it. Even the tourist leaflets were hidden in the parking garage, presumably so they did not spoil the presentation of the lobby.

My room was very clean but I had to ask for mine to be serviced as late as 4pm one day. There was only one chair, a desk-chair, in a two-bedded room. I would have liked an easy-chair. I would also have expected a bath tub and a magnifying make-up/shaving mirror in the bathroom. The laundry service was expensive and not reliable. The only elevator/lift broke down (it happens) but it took two days to be fixed (this shouldn't happen).

I chose the hotel for its small size and a neighbourhood I would understand - I'm a retired surfer - but the area is very busy with cyclists, skaters and pedestrians all competing for space along the sea-front. I would have been happier in La Jolla or one of the other towns further north, or even a little closer to San Diego on Mission Beach.

Go here if you are young, surfing, part of a crowd. You may well enjoy it. If you want the higher-end, personal service hotel experience that I have found elsewhere America, keep looking.

Room Tip: Avoid the corner "Spirit" rooms - they have a very partial view of anything.

What a uba cool hotel, very modern, clinical stark hotel with a hip attitude. Rooms big clean and funky. The bar has a view to die for and a real funky vibe. The place to be seen on mission beach. Had a fabulous 4 day visit. Staff very attentive, nothing to much trouble. Hotel on the beach. Sunsets to die for. If your are visiting San Diego this is a great place to stay. I would thoroughly recommend it, 5 star luxury
