“Lovely laid back experience in Hillcrest area”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

The house is an old, lovingly restored, comfortable spot in the Hillcrest neighborhood. It is close to Balboa Park, zoo, Gaslamp and downtown. And right next to Hillcrest neighborhood area which has a lot of funky restaurants and entertainment. The beds and rooms are extremely comfortable and we felt at home right away. The porch and parlor are great places to hang out. Always very low volume jazz music on at night in the parlor/dining area. Best: Ann and others on staff are fountains of knowledge on where to go, eat, park, etc. Close to airport but we Never were bothered by any plane noise.

A couple other reviews have commented on breakfast and the neighborhood. Since we always eat too much on vacation, I actually prefer a lighter breakfast and always loved the fresh fruit, warm muffins, and excellent coffee. We were expecting a bit more tree-lined and serene neighborhood than we first found, however, we did discover some of these streets over time and really appreciated the vitality of washington, robinson, and university, etc.

Room Tip: We stayed in Old Town room. It was roomy and pleasant. Bed was VERY COMFORTABLE and shower was great...

Hillcrest, and especially the hostess, Ann, was a perfect end to our road trip before the madness that was LA. We would have loved to stay longer in San Diego but Ann helped us make the most of the short time we had here. What really stands out is Ann's pride in her B&B; you get the personal touch here with all the comfort you could need. Highly recommended.

This B&B was just around the corner from a bustling neighbourhood that comes out at night. It has a very cosy atmosphere and we were very warmly welcomed by Ann and Shannon. They provided us with smiles, a good breakfast and lots of useful tips on how to get the best out of our stay in San Diego. We slept in the Zoo Room which was lovely and comfortable with a massive bathroom and walk-in shower. We used this location to visit San Diego Zoo which is 10 minutes by car - a must if you love animals - so much to see. For dinner we visited to Kyber Pass restaurant which is located nearby - a mixture of middle eastern food and comes very highly recommended by Ann and Shannon at the B&B. We also went to TGIs for some good old American Food!!! Overall, I would recommend this B&B to anybody who would like one or two nights in a comfortable and cosy atmosphere and would feel to be made very welcome.

Room Tip: Ask if the Zoo Room is available!

We stayed at Hillcrest House in San Diego's hip Hillcrest neighbourhood for nine days. Owner and innkeeper, Ann Callahan, gave us a warm welcome on our first day, and was a smiling face every morning at breakfast and often in the afternoon when we got back from exploring the city. Ann and her staff are really friendly, and Ann is a fountain of information on the city, attractions, restaurants and ways to get around. On the wall over the archway to the back of the house are the words "May those who enter as guests, leave as friends", and this truly embodies Ann's approach.

The rooms are clean and well appointed. We stayed in the Old Town Room, at the back of the main floor of the original house. The bed was very comfortable, with a down comforter and feather pillows, fitted with 5000 thread count sheets that are wonderfully soft and luxurious. The rooms are air conditioned, and there is a ceiling fan over the bed, which is really nice on those warmish nights when an air conditioner might be too much. The room has a private bath with tub and shower, and a separate private entrance off a small private patio that was nice. Since you're in a house, you can hear some noises from upstairs and in the common rooms, but we didn't find it objectionable. There is a cosy love seat on the front porch where we spent some of our evenings reading and enjoying the sunset, and there is a small table there too for breakfast or a nice glass of wine in the evening.

Breakfasts are healthy, with lots of fruit, granola, yogurt and whole-wheat toast. If you're hankering for fried eggs and sausages, you won't find it here, but there are a couple of places just a short walk away that can help you with that. There are plenty of great places to eat in San Diego, and the Hillcrest neighbourhood is filled with bars and restaurants for every palette, all within easy walking distance of Hillcrest House.

We started our time in San Diego attending a conference at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, which had us riding the MTS bus from Hillcrest to PetCo Park, and then taking a short walk over a beautiful footbridge to the Hilton. It takes about a 1/2 hour to go downtown this way, riding the #11 bus, or you can take a #10 bus and the Green Line tram and do it in about 40 minutes. Getting a Compass Card for the MTS gives you easy access to the busses and trams. The cards are purchased in 1, 2, 3, 4 or 31 day blocks, and let you get on and off the busses and trams as much as you want. Using MTS saves you the hassle and cost of parking, making the city easy to access. There are great free apps for iPhone and Android that can help you navigate around the city using the system without the hassle of route maps and schedules.

We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Hillcrest House

The HIllcrest House Bed and Breakfast was comfortable, convenient, clean and a real pleasurable stay. Easy walking distance (a minute or three) from the Hillcrest district of shops and restaurants, and equally convenient to the highway, downtown or Balboa by car - the location is excellent.

The common areas, dining room, sitting area, front porch, were comfortable as home.

Oh, the room comes with free parking which is a $30 per night savings over the Gaslamp and downtown hotels, which rather uniformly, add to the price of the room.

Really enjoyed our stay.

Possibly the couple running this B&B have never met anyone they don't like! They create an atmosphere that accepts people as family in this easy going & charming B&B. We even made friends with some other couples staying in the complex. We enjoyed exploring the great restaurants in walking distance and Balboa Park a short drive away.

Room Tip: Balboa Room is a large room in a separate house that offers a common seating area, a porch area, and...

We stayed at Hillcrest House based upon the suggesion of a friend and confirmed by the excellent Trip Advisor recommendations. The rooms come in several sizes. We stayed in a small room which was greatly enhanced by the common "living room" area. The continental breakfast was good and available from 8:30 - 10am. We arrived after normal "business hours" but our host had our keys and a detailed welcome letter waiting for us as promised. Off-street parking and FREE WiFi is included. Ann Callahan, the Innkeeper, is a delight and is very knowledgeable about the area and enjoys sharing recommendations of things to see and do - as well as places to eat! We look forward to our next visit to San Diego - and the opportunity to return to Hillcrest House!
