Just got back to Minnesota from San Diego liked the hotel and its location was close to fun bars and restaurants! The bar and its staff were also very nice! Also the concierge Charlie was very nice and a cool guy! Would love to visit here again soon! :-) I didn't want to leave!

I stayed here in early June on business for 3 days and then into the weekend. I was fortunate enough to be upgraded to a deluxe room, which was ideal, but based on the size of the deluxe room I can understand some other comments that the rooms may be a little too small. This would be the only negative that I would find for this hotel. The room was very clean and tidy, with fresh water and supplies each day, plus the wireless internet was very good - important when you are in business!! The overnight valet parking is $30, but you can come and go as many times as you want and the valet guys can't do enough to help and will recommend cheaper parking options if required. The location of the Sofia Hotel on the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter is also a big plus. A great run/walk circuit takes you along the seafront, round to the baseball stadium and back through the Gaslamp Quarter. Also try the adjacent Currant restaurant - although you can't make charges to your room they have a great 4-7pm happy hour on both food and drinks, where again the staff can't do too much for you. I'll be back to the Hotel Sofia on my next trip to San Diego.

Beautifully appointed hotel downtown San Diego and close to everything. The staff was excellent, the room (though a bit small) was gorgeous, the location was perfect. I was in San Diego for the RnR 1/2 Marathon and was able to walk to everything from the hotel (convention center, start line at Balboa Park, finish line at Petco Park). The airport was a 10 minute bus ride and the bus stops a block from the hotel.
AND, not to be missed is their weekend brunch with bottomless mimosas at Currant. I will definitely be staying there again the next time I'm in town.

I stayed here in 2008 and never got around to reviewing it until now that I have a TripAdvisor account. The hotel is perfectly situated in downtown SanDiego. It's perfect walking distance to the sports stadium where the Padres play, you can also walk to the marina and to the convention center where the famous San Diego comic book convention is held every year. The rooms are perfectly decorated and the beds are very comfortable. There is also fresh lemon water in the lobby which was much appreciated after having spent many hours walking around and seeing San Diego.

Pros: close to Gaslamp Quarter, Horton Mall, Santa Fe Depot ... relatively close to Seaport Village, S.D. Convention Center

Cons: inability to fulfill a reservation room type request, rude staff, small room, small and ridiculously designed bathroom

I don't think I would stay here again. S.D. has enough hotels that you can do much better.

Room Tip: Do not book a double room, there is barely enough space to walk around the beds. If you have the ar...

close to the cruise terminal, only 5 mins by taxi, centrally located, handy for bus routes & train/tram line so we didn't have to hire a car. We enjoyed our stay here..the room was clean & tidy, not the largest of rooms compared to some we've stayed in in America, but more than adequate. Even though the room faced the main street, noise was not a problem. Check in was friendly & easy,as was check out. Overall we would definitely stay here again.

Usually when we go to San Diego in April we stay at a high rise resort hotel. This time we chose to be downtown and it was a perfect location for a week. We arrived from Los Angeles on the train and a quick cab to the hotel. Pleasant check in and always informative information from the front desk (Brian in particular is a stellar customer service rep) and the bellman station. We used travel points but when our daughter decided to meet us and stay for 2 nights, we found the hotel rate was 1/2 the price we paid for an identical room, which is to advise people to check with hotel to see if you can get a better last minute rate. Loved the location as close to transportation, great food, shopping. We borrowed bikes and went to Seaport Village early one morning. They have a terrific yoga room and I bought a $5 DVD to do at home. This is something that wish all hotels would incorporate into their rec facilities as I do yoga 6 times a week and its hard to continue on holidays.
One of two elevators was broken for our stay which was fine on the way down but inconvenient wait with parcels for the way up. Nice restaurants and cafes right around the street. We rented a car and thanks to the bellman it was great service and we just returned to another hotel - meant not paying extra airport surcharges. We will certainly stay at The Sophia again - friendly staff, clean and a convenient location. Not 4 stars? Something amiss - couldn't put my finger on it but just the slightest thing that would have made it 5 so really 4 and a half.
