This place may well be where the whole "tiny house" concept was invented.
We were booked in here to meet someone for a business meeting. I assumed that because of the price of the room that it would be a large executive style room with an area to spread our work and do what we needed to do.

WRONG! The after getting in the two-person elevator and going upstairs we found the room to be wall to wall beds. It was impossible for two people to even move around freely. The beds are so close together that my associate and I felt that we were in bed together.

On a positive note: the hotel staff, from the valet parking attendant to the entire front desk staff were more than pleasant and a joy to deal with.

I get that it's a historic building and all; but if you want 21st century comfort and amenities this is NOT the place.

From check in to check out, this property exceeded my expectations. Comfortable rooms, free Internet and an enthusiastic staff. Walking distance to public transportation, gas light district etc. The bus to the airport is within a block. Highly recommended

This was a very nice property, and had that old style feel, but yet very modern. What I mean is that it did not look like a "chain" hotel in any sense. The thing that some people may not like is that the rooms are not as spacious as many newer hotels (again, why I think it had an old style / European feel to it. The front desk staff were friendly.

We only stayed here one night and checked in late at midnight. The lobby is really nice, seems like they have put a lot of effort into it. Two things we weren't aware of before booking were the Historical Hotel Fee and the Daily Resort Fee. Yes, I understand the historical Fee -- it is a really beautiful building and explains the reasons for the really tiny hotel rooms. However why they need to charge a resort fee, I really don't know.

However, they really need to redo their rooms. My bedding was stained and all bobbled plus you couldn't just sleep with a single sheet it was a duvet. The nicest part of the room was the bathroom area which looked as if they had been updated but the switches on the wall didn't sit level.

The furniture in the room was all scratched with a light layer of dust.

Wasn't impressed with the hotel, wouldn't recommend staying there until they update the rooms.

Management was nice however and discounted our stay for us.

The Sofia Hotel is a 15-minute walk to the harbor, the Midway Museum and a short walk to the Gaslamp district. Here you understand what the guests need. There is power outlets "everywhere" and although the room was small there was everything you usually need in a hotel. The only thing I can complain about was that the window could not open. It did not make a big difference though with a quiet and well functioning AC. As often in the US, no breakfast was included, but 10% was discounted from the bill at the restaurant in the same building if you showed your room key.
