My boyfriend & I stayed here for 4 nights during a road trip of California and can honestly say we loved it! First of all the staff were very laid back, friendly and helpful from the receptionist to the bar and restaurant staff. It actually felt like chatting with friends and they were brilliant at recommending places to go and see and what to do in the area and we ended up having a great day at La Jolla for the day watching the baby seals at the kids beach followed by a look round the Contemporary Art Museum down there – both of which were fantastic and were recommended by Jessie in the restaurant the previous night.
We don’t usually eat in the hotels we stay in but one of the restaurants we planned to eat in fell through so we thought we’d give it a try as we wanted to try the ‘Dive In Movie Night’ around the pool anyway - and we were SO glad we did! (F.Y.I. definitely reserve if you plan to go to the Movie Night as it was fully booked the night we went and the impression we got was most weeks are the same). First of all there is a lovely, warm atmosphere and the food was excellent. After a great shared starter of fish cakes, I ordered the Short Rib Gnocchi and it was utterly delicious! One of the best meals of the holiday for sure but probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had! My boyfriend ordered the burger which was equally as good. I love that they had a limited but still varied menu which they clearly could do really well and from the ‘Appetizer of the Day’ in our hotel room these change frequently. The cocktails and craft beers available were also fantastic and the bar staff will happily make you anything you want off menu too – I ordered a couple of Kir Royales which were so good!
We stayed in one of the Jewel rooms - No.14 and initially we thought the room was smaller than we both expected (the photos make them look bigger than they are) but the décor and fun elements made up for it! We had our own fish – Moby – a beach towel we could ‘adopt’ and environmentally friendly boxes of water – all with cute stories and captions. The décor was modern with a retro vibe and fresh and the bed was the comfiest we had on the whole trip! It can be noisy whilst the restaurant is open but they are very prompt at shutting down at 10.30pm so it was all quiet when we went to bed and we had a great night’s sleep.
The only minor issues we had was that there was no fridge or tea/coffee making facilities which we had come to expect from the all the previous hotels we stayed in on our trip however they did provide an ice bucket but which was ultimately too small to get anything more than a couple of drinks in at a time and it would be nice to have a cold beer in the room now and again without having to go downstairs to ask for ice every time (again, the staff couldn't be more helpful – even providing limes for our margaritas!) I guess this is to do with their environmental policy but even a small fridge would suffice. Like I say, these were very minor issues though.
Parking was 10 Dollars a night on the side street or 5 Dollars on the front street spaces and they are limited however we only struggled once and even then they couldn't have been more helpful at organising to make one available for us.
All in all I couldn't recommend this hotel enough – great, unique rooms, beyond fantastic, friendly staff and service and great location! Our definite go to place in San Diego!
