Spent spring break at the Del Mar with family, and what a great place, great service, and best was the location.
First the place. We really liked our room (Id suggest something on the 3rd floor, had very enjoyable views). The pool grounds were very nice and our 9 year old had a blast swimming every day. Even though was kind of busy, it never seemed crowded and guests did a great job of 'spacing' out between families. The room was very clean, they have great housekeeping team. The grounds were very nice, enjoyable to walk around, we even played bocci ball.
Next, the customer service. The front staff, the coffee shop, the lobby and the valets were all very professional, courteous, and attentive. The wait staff by the pool was very good, the only person that I thought was not on it was the bartender by the pool (and this was seeing the same guy for 3 days), as he was not attentive, not very friendly, and overall a jerk...which surprised me as the rest of the staff was great....guess he was too cool for me???
third, the location. You can not get much better to be central to the zoo, seaworld, the safari park, beaches...yet be able to 'get away from it all'! We just couldn't believe where ever we went, it was 15-20 minute drive. Was awesome

The resort is an expensive place to stay ($350-500 for just a regular room), but was very much worth it, we had a great vacation and even managed to come home relaxed and refreshed!!!

Recently traveled to Southern California on business and stayed here. Wasn't quite sure what to expect give the amazing reviews others had left.

I can state without any reservations that this as good as it get. If/when you have the chance, stay here. The ambiance and professionalism is perfect.

Thank you for a most enjoyable visit.

Once you enter the hotel drive and see the golf course, beautiful flowers and then first glimpse the hotel buildings in the distance then you know that you have come to a great place. The valet parking staff are very welcoming and soon whisk your luggage to your room. Our room overlooking the ornamental pool was very large and elegantly furnished; even the wall mounted TV was located within a gilded picture frame. The bathroom had wooden shutters that opened onto the bedroom and had a bath and a shower as well as a separate WC.

We ate both breakfast and dinner at Amaya twice during our stay, the food and service was excellent on each occasion and the setting on the patio is magnificent. For a lighter breakfast you can go the the cafe on the 3rd floor and get a range of pastries and drinks to eat there or take away.

There is a very pleasant short walk around the grounds of the hotel which takes you close to the golf course. There are two swimming pools near the hotel buildings where you can eat lunch and an excellent range of drinks are served.

We took a taxi into Del Mar one evening and ate at an excellent Chinese restaurant. The Torrey Pines National Park is a must see place with a range of trails which all have excellent views over the golf course or the Pacific Ocean. You can park on the road free or drive up the hill to the Visitor Centre car park. it costs $10-12 to park here for the day but it saves quite a hike up the hill.

Did not want to leave the property and wanted to stay there forever. Everything is so beautiful and high class. The grounds are gorgeous and the resort had the feeling of Tuscany. Our room was huge, clean and luxury. Nespresso coffee is a big plus :-) We have never experienced service at such high level. I wish there were more resorts like that.

I returned to the Grand Del Mar just a few days ago and am pleased to say that it was of the highest caliber as I had previously found it for the past 2 years. It is managed by Mr. Tom Voss, a GM extraordanaire, which has the hotel running like a Swiss[German as he is] watch. The staff goes way out of its way to please and accomodate. The place is impeccably clean. The food, whether at at the golf course or in Amaya , the hotel dining room, is excellent. Even the fruit slices are cut to perfection. You have to experience it to beleive it.
There are flowers everywhere inside and out.
The adult swimming pool is spotless and manned by staff that makes you think you are on The Seabourne.
Every room is 550 sq. ft.Yes that is the real size.
Maid service twice a day or more if you need it.Limo service complimentary if you book early.
What more could you ask???
If you are planning to go to the La Jolla area, you are making a mistake if you go elsewhere.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the third floor overlooking the quiet adult pool.

The property is beautiful. The scale is appropriate. The magic is in the architectural details. The service is gracious, friendly and very well trained. The Grand sets a standard that very few properties can even imagine, much less achieve. Enjoy!

We were looking forward to our visit to The Grand Del Mar after seeing it being listed as the #1 resort in the USA. Opened just before the Great Recession in the fall of 2007 to the tune of close to $500 million, ownership spared no expense. The resort is set into a magical mountain landscape and carved away a perfect amount of space for all its amenities. But alas, the true test of a 5-STAR resort comes in high season.

We arrived during Easter week. The good, bad and the ugly.

The ugly: The management and staff were not prepared for the amount of guests and outsiders that flocked to the resort. Pool service was awful and they ran out of towels on multiple days. Easter Sunday they advertise to locals and they got better service than the guests. In fact getting a reservation at the restaurants was almost impossible because the locals filled them up. After 7 years of high seasons, the resort certainly should know how to respond.

The bad: If you are an early work-out person like me, you love to take a steam and shower after your workout. The problem is that the spa doesn't open until 9AM and you have to pay a $25 day charge. The fully equipped gym is amazing but has no locker room. All rooms have espresso machines but if you want regular coffee you have to go to the coffee shop and pay. And kids breakfasts are $9 and a glass of milk or soda is $3.

The good: The Grand (as they refer to it) is one of the best resorts in the country off-season. The resort itself features a family pool area that features a full size pool, pool with 4' depth and fairly large and a kid-friendly 1' deep pool. Better yet, they offer the spa pool that is adult only with no noise, cell phones or partying.

The spa is world-class and the locker room is over the top. There is a relaxation room, plenty of quiet space and a multitude of spa services to select from. As mentioned earlier, the gym is well equipped as any I have ever seen with plenty of free weights.

If you a runner, there are plenty of dirt paths adjacent to the resort (Shaw trail is about 5 miles and awesome and then there is the park trail that goes for miles and miles). If golf or tennis is your game, you will love the clay tennis courts and golf clubhouse and course, both within walking distance. They closed the Equestrian center, it would make a great volleyball center.

Amaya is the main restaurant with a huge outdoor heated terrace. Open for all meals, you won't be disappointed. Pricey but food quality is excellent. Smoked salmon plate for breakfast is one of the best anywhere. Extensive wine list at dinner. Since we were with kids, we did not attempt their 5-STAR restaurant. There is also a coffee shop with sandwiches and ice cream.

Rooms are well equipped with everything you would expect. We stayed in both the Tuscany and Prado suites. The Prado suite has two full baths and plenty of space. The Tuscany although larger has only one bathroom. Turndown chocolates are special. Toiletries are full size and decadent.

You also need to spend time looking at the architectural details ownership put in. The best is in the public bathrooms on the main floor. Each stall features 4" crown molding, and details you will not see anywhere. Even the faucets are gold.

They offer car service to the beach (10 minutes to Del Mar) and to dinner but reserve well in advance.

Service is great but not up to the par of a Four Seasons, Montage or Peninsula. Most likely it is the result of being a single property. Best service is at the Concierge counter.

Overall, this is both a great place to escape for a romantic get-away or take your kids and splurge. But for now, avoid peak season and visit The Grand.

Room Tip: Request third floor only which is the main level to the resort.
