We decided after a lovely stay with the Bay Club to return a little over a year later. We booked online for the expensive room that we wanted & my husband followed up the booking with a call to make sure that the room indeed had a wrap around balcony. We arrived at the hotel a couple of weeks later to be told that we could have that room for 3 nights & then would have to move to another to accommodate a newlywed couple that booked it for the remaining two nights of our reservation. WHAT?! We asked how that was even possible. We were told that we must have booked at exactly the same time as the newlyweds. My husband asked why if we are there & in the room for 3 nights must WE be the ones to be moved? Why not move the other couple? Well they didn't really know but that is how it was going to work out. They gave us a complimentary upgrade & when we saw the room I recognized it immediately as the same one we had a year ago. Its not a bad room, but it has a Juliet balcony & there were three of us so that means standing room only. We settled for that room because the others we were shown were simply too small for 3 adults. I still cannot fathom why our reservation didn't take precedence. Room 274 is a nice location but at night the nightclub next door at Humphrey's plays very loud music until 1030pm on the weekdays. We had to close the windows & turn on the AC just to drown out the noise. Otherwise the rooms are adequate, the furniture is becoming nasty with old stains & the convertible couch was all lump & bumps & worn out springs. Some updating needs to take place.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to Humphreys are "treated" to free concert & lounge music. Room 274 has n...

The resort itself was nice. The room was big, the bed comfy and the room was clean. The room does look like it is stuck in the 1980's Miami Vice era, but hey, I liked the '80's. Upon arriving, we were greeted at the front desk by the Bell Staff - Brett. He was friendly, funny and he answered all of our touristy questions and even pulled out a map and showed us how to get where. Brett is the star of the hotel. He's on top of everything, he's quick and good at his job and best of all he's always smiling. When we checked in we got a room right at the front of the resort and it shared a patio and looked out on the parking lot. Brett informed us to ask the manager to see if any other comparable rooms were available and he even suggested a few. The staff was nice enough to let us view the rooms they had open and we did choose another room that had a partial view to the marina and a large private patio. Brett got our baggage together from the room and got us set up down the hall in the most efficient, fun, manner.

The one thing that could improve this resort is the breakfast. The orange juice tasted like powdered something orange, definitely not Simply Orange and it was warm. There is a wait staff of sorts, but it's more like they get you coffee and pick up the dishes. There seems to be few of them and tables do not get cleaned fast enough for the people coming in who want to sit down, and not every table has salt and pepper and for the three mornings we had breakfast there, we got silverware, but no spoons.

The food was okay. Considering this was a holiday weekend, the little breakfast buffet seemed to run out bread items quickly and little Danishes and such quickly and they never seemed to get refilled. The OJ definitely should have been some type of real tasting OJ and served chilled.

All in all, the resort was good. I would stay here again, but I would most likely go out to breakfast - even though breakfast is free.

Room Tip: When booking, get a room that faces the marina, on the backside of the resort. Otherwise, you will g...

Driving on to Shelter Island I had high hopes for this hotel. The location is nice although poor public transport meant always taking the car into the centre of San Diego.
The reception staff were very friendly and helpful and check in was efficient. The rooms were large, clean and well equipped and our room had a lovely view over the marina. Sadly though the whole hotel is very dated and needs a major facelift.
Unfortunately breakfast was quite poor and a couple of the staff serving we're very surly. This was a shame as others were smiley and helpful. The most miserable of all was the bar tender we encountered within 30 minutes of arrival. He was most rude and inhospitable and put us off spending time in the bar. Fortunately we found a lovely friendly bar close by. We enjoyed the last couple of evenings around the hotel (weekend) when a different barman was on duty.
Despite the negative comments we did have an enjoyable time in San Diego.

Room Tip: Marina view rooms were nice and we could see and hear the concerts next door at Humphreys which was...

We really were hoping to stay at Humphrey's because of the concert. When that location was booked solid, we chose Bay Club Hotel next door. What a very nice surprise!!!! Staff very friendly, room nice, meals great, atmosphere fun and lively.

The Bay Club Hotel had clean, good-sized rooms. It was a nice location and the free breakfast was a nice perk. Some friends were staying at the Best Western next door and it was definitely much more modern and had more amenities. The Bay Club wasn't a bad place at all though for the money, and the perk of having a kid-free weekend there was there were hardly any kids by the pool (not so at the Best Western where there were loads - even at 11 p.m.!).

Room Tip: If you're looking for a water view, don't bother paying extra for a room with a full view. T...

We had an absolutely fantastic experience with the Bay Club Hotel and Marina. They were comfortable, clean, quiet, and in a great location. The entire staff was friendly and professional. I honestly have no complaints about our stay there other than it was not longer! My husband and I were on our first long trip away from home with our three-year-old. We are former long-time residents of San Diego (so we are very familiar with the area.) We had planned most of our nights staying with friends and family and 4 nights "away" at the hotel. After we checked in we discovered not only was our room large, very clean, and comfortable but we had an absolutely gorgeous view of the sailboats in the marina from our balcony. The complementary breakfast was great and a very convenient start to our busy days. Out the front of the hotel- across the street - is long path along the bay with a view of downtown, parks and sculptures, and a bayside playground for our son. We were due to check out on Thursday, to spend Friday and Saturday nights "crashing" with friends and by Wednesday I realized that we really really wanted to stay. My three-year-old was just beginning to adjust to the travel and I wanted to keep some stability for him. We checked online and it said that the hotel was fully booked Friday and Saturday night. I decided to stop by the front desk and check just in case they had had any cancellations. I was extremely lucky to meet Mike – the general manager – who not only was able to book us our same room the next two nights, but also gave us a great rate. At that point our stay got even better! Friday night while my son slept peacefully in the room, my husband and I sat out on the balcony and were treated to a concert from Humphry's next-door. It was loud enough that we could enjoy the music but not disruptive at all in the room. The food at the Bay club hotel is great and there is also a number of other options right on Shelter island and nearby in Point Loma and Sports arena (former local shout-out to Point Loma Seafoods and Wahoo's!) The housekeeping staff did a great job too (someone took the time to line-up my sons toys on a day I had left some disarray) and they always found a time to service our room even though our schedule varied day to day. I feel I should mention that this is all at a very reasonable price- Sure there are fancier places and beachfront hotels but you will pay dearly for them in our beloved (and pricy) city of San Diego! You get a lot for your money at The Bay Club Hotel! We will without-a-doubt be returning!

Room Tip: Check Schedule of concerts at Humphrey's - you will be able to hear concerts from the marina sid...

After a quick check in by the efficient and friendly reception staff we went to the pool area to have a look round and tried to order a drink - unfortunately we were served by a very unfriendly and unhelpful bar man who was grumpy, not very sociable and in fact he was downright rude. We couldn't understand why the hotel would want to employ someone who puts people off coming into the bar because of the way he speaks to customers. We noticed it wasn't just us he was rude to it was it was other customers too! We decided to eat and drink outside of the hotel throughout our stay apart from the Saturday and Sunday when a younger man was serving behind the bar. He was friendly, chatty and seemed to be enjoying his job! Which is always a good sign.
The rooms were clean and well equipped with lovely views of the marina. The pool area was small but very clean it was adequate for us as we were out most days. The concerts didn't bother us at all - there were 3 during our stay - yes the music was quite loud but it was finished by 10o'clock - yes there were loads of people around going to the concert but they were no bother at all - the location of the hotel is a little way out of the centre of San Diego (about 10 mins drive) buses were non existent and tram services didn't go to this part of the island . The breakfast was pretty naff and so was the service from the waiting staff - some looked unhappy and kept forgetting things we were asking for - orange juice was undrinkable with black bits floating in it - scrabbled eggs weren't too clever either - however the man serving the hot breakfast was very helpfully and jolly.
Pros - excellent professional reception staff
Well equipped spacious rooms
Views were lovely
Cons - rude bar man
Air conditioning units very loud
A little way out of San Diego
Breakfast poor
