From the time we were picked up at the airport by the complimentary shuttle service to our check out 8 nights later we were given excellent service and assistance at the hotel. Their morning hot breakfast was very welcoming and the rooms were very well maintained. The bed had to be one of the most comfortable beds that I have slept in anywhere.

My family (4 adults, 2 children) took two rooms for eight nights here in January. We were looking for a hotel where we could walk to restaurants and attractions some of the time and that offered some cooking facilities. This place didn’t quite fill the cooking bill but the in-room fridge, microwave and coffee/tea maker were close enough. The rooms are fairly large so when we did eat in (take-out pizza, salads, burgers) we all fit comfortably into the room my husband and I had, which had only one bed (and thus space for extra chairs borrowed from the other room). Also the breakfast that comes free with the room is a substantial buffet (including rice & miso soup!) served in a nice restaurant, as long as you can get there by the 9:30 weekday cut-off (10:30 on weekends).

The location on Ash Street made it easy to walk to a big selection of restaurants, including those in Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter, which also has a large mall with excellent shopping. San Diego Bay is a few short blocks away and Balboa Park, with its lovely old World’s Fair buildings now used as museums, plus the world-famous San Diego Zoo, is walkable or a short bus ride. We walked back one night with a two-year-old in a stroller and a six-year-old on foot, though we did take a break to eat on the way. (A hint about the streets: they’re arranged alphabetically so when you get to Grape Street you know Ash isn’t too far.) Farther off attractions like La Jolla and Legoland (highly recommended) are theoretically accessible by public transportation but a vehicle gets you there a lot faster. We rented a van for two days from a place just a couple of blocks away from the hotel.

We had a good sleep every night in very comfortable beds and quiet surroundings. The rooms were clean and reasonably priced. The outdoor pool is completely surrounded by the hotel so it’s well protected from winds and with the hot tub to warm up in the children were able to enjoy the pool even in January. Really, my only complaint about the hotel was that the cold water tap only ran cold water in the morning – after that, no matter how long you ran the water it stayed warm. Our daughter found the same in her room. No idea why, but this could be the reason that the ice machine on our floor was often out of ice.

We liked this hotel and we loved San Diego.

The hotel staff was excellent; the location is great, and the value received was very good. I would stay there again in a heartbeat. The hotel is close to the Amtrak station, public transport, the Gas Light District, and the San Diego Symphony, which was a significant reason for my visit. It is also close to the water front and the San Diego airport.

Just returned from a five night six day trip to beautiful San Diego and stayed at best Western Bayside. We stayed in room 1411 with a view of the bay. Our room was very clean and the bed was just right for a good nights sleep. The free breakfast was okay, but I have seen better at other Best Westerns. We only had breakfast there two mornings. There are many places close by to walk to if you want to buy a better breakfast. But overall was very happy staying there and will return in the future.

Day 1: our flight arrived at 9:40 and we took the shuttle to our hotel. Our room was not available yet so the hotel allowed us to store our luggage in a secure room. We then walked down to the harbor and had lunch at Anthony's which was very good. We then walked along the harbor and looked at all the things to do. There is the maritime museum, trolley tours, and the uss Miday Aircraft Carrier that you can tour. A little further down is Seaport Village that had lots of little shops and places to eat and good view of the harbor and the marina. We did have two waffle cones at Ben and Jerry's that cost $16.82 for two cones. hight priced for ice cream.

Day 2: Best Western is close to the trolley and bus system. We walked a couple of blocks to little italy and took the green line trolley to the stop at old town and then boarded bus 9 that took us to Seaworld where we spent the entire day. Seaworld was great and probably could have spent two days there. Food prices and drinks are very expensive at Seaworld. It was like going to the movies. $4 for bottled water and $5.19 for soft drinks!! Seaworld was a blast and loved all the shows.

Day 3: Took a whole day to see the San Diego Zoo. Walked to a bus stop on the corner of Broadway and Union street and took Bus #7 right to the zoo. The zoo was wonderful and needed another day to see it all. Comimg back from the zoo we accidently took the wrong # 7 bus back to our hotel and ended far away. We should of taken the #7 downtown and not #7 univeristy. luckily the bus driver gave us a ride back to the bus depot and we took another bus back downtown to our hotel. It was a little scary by the bus depot. Lots of homeless people and it did not look like a good part of town. We can look back and laugh now.

Day 4: Walked down to the harbor and took the ferry to Coronodo Island. Spent the morning looking at the sights and had lunch by the ferry landing. We then took the ferry back and walked to little italy train trolley and took the train out to Fashion Valley Mall. Was at the mall till early evening and then took trian back downtown to our hotel.

Day 5: walked the two blocks to the habor and signed up to be on the hop on hop off trolley. The trolley went around some areas and you could get off anywhere you wanted and then they would come back around o pick you up. We also did the SEAL tour which was a bus that went along the harbor and then it turned into a boat and went in the water cruising up the harbor. We hoped off the trolley on the the last stop in Old Town and browsed at the little shops and then had dinner outside at a little Mexican Restaurant. We then took the train from old town back to our hotel.

We enjoyed our trip and look forward to return to San Diego. Lots of things we did not have time to do. Downtown is a good central place to stay.

Room Tip: A room up high facing the harbor is a good view

Great location (close to bus stops and the train), clean rooms, large bathroom with nice counter space. Staff was very friendly, only issue was being miss-informed by them about an event that didn't even exist - not impressed.

Room Tip: Room far away from elevator was nice and quiet
