We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Island Palms on Shelter Island and would highly recommend the hotel to others. We had a room in the Casa Marina building, 2 Queen beds, updated bathroom, and a nice size balcony. The room was large and clean, and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. The view of San Diego Bay from our balcony was unbelievable. We enjoyed watching the Navy jets take off from North Island, and also saw Navy helicopters and ships, and all sorts of pleasure craft and tour boats, cargo ships, etc. The hotel location is perfect, close to everything in and around San Diego!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights, before heading home. We absolutely loved this hotel! The staff on the front desk are so welcoming when you check in. We had a lovely room, on the third floor, overlooking the San Diego skyline. Yes it does also over look the car park, but the view at dusk is wonderful. We had spent three weeks clocking up about 2000 miles, so we loved the relaxed atmosphere at this hotel. We did eat at the restaurant there and found the food to be quite good, but from other reviews it does seem to be hit or miss with the food. We also ate at the Fiddlers Green, which is a short walk away, and the steak was fantastic. We are already planning our next trip to the States and this hotel is definitely on our list to stay at, but for longer next time around. It's a great base to explore San Diego or to just chill out.

This was perfect place after doing a lot research on this site. We had a free night from Best Western we selected this place. We also were given a Free upgrade with our status being gold member. This worked well for my sister and nephew to visit us daily comfortable. We enjoyed the room service dinner and breakfast. The evening walks along the habor. The place had serenity for me and hubby. We definitely will be back. The staff were so accomading. The place very comfy and clean

We stayed in a suite with kitchen as we were there with my 2 year old daughter and there for nearly 2 weeks and it was perfect. The extra sitting room meant she could sleep while we were in the other room. The kitchen is very well equipped and had everything we needed and a good coffee maker (although the hotel coffee's not great so bought our own!). Perfect location for getting around San Diego and surrounding areas and lovely view of the marina. Things got a little hectic around 4 July which was the day we were travelling back to Scotland and the hotel was nicer before then to be honest. It gets a little too busy for the pool area etc. and special arrangements for going in and out and parking made it all a little strange for our last day and we couldn't get late check out because the hotel was so busy. It was great for the rest of our trip though and all the staff were lovely and great service.

Room Tip: A water view of either the marina or waterfront are equally good but if you're looking at the bay you are looking over the car park first so a higher room is better.

This sprawling multi-building hotel is located far out toward the end of Shelter Island, across the harbor entrance from the North Island Naval Air Station. Some buildings have elevators, others do not. Most parking spaces are near the buildings, but there is a parking garage at the end of the property. Try to get a room on the marina side, overlooking Point Loma. The views on that side of the hotel are spectacular, whereas the other side is parking lot view. As others have said, the rooms are large for the price, and the beds are comfortable. You can stroll along a well landscaped walkway from your building to the main building with the check-in desk and the restaurant. Some of the food in the restaurant is quite good; you just have to know what to order. The salmon is excellent, as is the quesadilla. The American breakfast is quite reasonably priced for the amount of food served.

This is an excellent hotel, but to say it is close to Pacific Beach is like saying Brooklyn is near the Statue of Liberty.

Room Tip: Marina side is better. Second floor marina side rooms generally have the best views.
