I stayed in Tower 3. Renovated big rooms, clean, nice room service, helpful staff. Great location. Very nice views, both of the bay and of the city. The bed was fantastic! The pool is really small and stays in the shadow most part of the day, but with so much do to around, I really doubt you get to use it at all.

This property is in a great location right on the waterfront near the Maritime Museum. All rooms have a balcony but there is zero privacy between balcony's, which can be annoying at times. The room was spacious and we rarely heard a sound through the walls. Parking spaces are extremely narrow, bring your smallest car if you want to be able to open the doors. The hotel does not have any bar or eatery of their own own property and rely on the Ruth's Chris and a cafe on the street, which is fine, but was unexpected (street cafe was very useful for breakfast lunch and dinner). Overall a reasonable hotel and I would stay again.

I didn’t pick Wyndham Bayside, I was attending a 2 day educational event at the hotel , and decided to spend a few extra days in San Diego, which gave me a total of 5 days at the hotel.

This hotel has an unusual location. It is very convenient for the airport, which explains why about 1/3 of the guests appear to be airline flight crews. And it is just across the street from the cruise terminal, Anthony’s Fish Grotto, the USS Midway, with a spectacular view of Coronado and the Naval base there.

However it’s not quite close enough to the SD convention center, and there are far better hotels closer to the SDCC. it’s surrounded by city traffic much of the time and it’s near the harbor, with no beach for miles around. So unless you happen to be visiting a business really nearby, you can do better. The location is not so great for families that want to go to San Diego’s kid friendly attractions.

Case in point, if you are unfortunate enough to have a car, be prepared to pony up at least $24 a night for parking privileges. If you don’t have car, you really can’t get to many places. Factor the $24 into your room costs. Management thinks that $24 is a fair rate, but unless you need to be here at this location you’d do better to go elsewhere, and park for free. While it IS possible to walk to Gaslamp district and Petco, it is a long long walk. You could ride the trolley if you want to walk to the trolley a few blocks away and then wait until one comes by.

Walking around the neighborhood, I decided to dine to Seaport Village, about ½ mile away. It was a nice walk, and using an alternate way back on Pacific Highway, I encountered about 2 blocks from the hotel a whole 25 person (or more) colony of homeless, living on the street, with tents and cardboard boxes for shelter. Be advised to avoid Pacific Highway when walking at night.

Walking to the north and east there is India Street in Little Italy with many fine restaurants. It is 5 – 10 blocks away from the hotel, across the train tracks.

The airport pick up service leaves a bit to be desired. I was told that calling was not necessary, as the van comes by every 30 minutes at the airport. In theory, maybe it does. But after 45 minutes, I called and the front desk told me I must have missed seeing the shuttle. I’m sorry, but no I didn’t. It just didn’t show up, as the other 10 people waiting could attest. So, my advice here is to call upon landing even if they say it isn’t necessary. It is necessary if you want to avoid waiting an hour.

The rooms are average Holiday Inn circa 1960 size. My room had 2 comfortable beds, a 39” TV with available HDMI port, cable TV. There was no room safe, no refrigerator, no microwave. The closet to hang your suits is weirdly inside the bathroom. The desk was the type designed from pen and paper days and the lamp had some extra 120v sockets on it so we could plug in phones and computer. There was no sofa or plush chair. There was one chair with the desk, but it was a plastic thing similar to what’s sold at Costco and not suitable for long term sitting comfort.

The internet was not business class. Wireless was free, and Wyndham gets bonus points for that. It was very erratic in speed though. Speedtest would pull 6 mbps down and up on initial testing, but sometimes it would stall out for minutes at a time. All of our associates had the same issue, it’s not our devices. It happened all 5 days I was there. Smartphone users will probably want to just use their phone provider rather than use the hotel internet.

There is a small convenience store located behind the gift shop for soft drinks and snacks. There is a small Starbucks clone in the lobby for coffee. We didn’t try the room service.

The hotel rooms are in 3 different buildings. After reading other reviews, I knew to request NOT to have a room facing the train tracks because of noise from the trains, the horns, the bells clanging, etc. The desk clerk initially gave me such a room, and after minor arm twisting she did give me a better room, noting of course it was the last one. Sure. I was assigned to a lovely view of Anthony’s Fish Grotto, whose crowds get a little noisy at times, plus the occasional 7am Marine platoon chanting while they jog down Harbor Drive. There is minimal airplane noise, which goes with the territory of being close to the airport. We had mini balconies, with windows that could open for fresh sea air.

In summary, this hotel is merely OK. Pros: Comfortable beds, nice view if you get a harbor view room. Internet is free. Cons: Location isn’t great unless you are a flight attendant, or going on a cruise. Parking is expensive. Rooms facing the railroad tracks noisy. Homeless colony a block away. Internet starts and stops for no reason. If you are visiting on vacation, get something closer to the SD attractions. If you are going to a downtown meeting or convention, there are many better hotels closer to SDCC. Airport pickup needs a call to hotel for assured pickup on time.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the railroad tracks noisy.

Overall the room and location was wonderful. Biggest issue was rude front desk and tried to sell us time share when we couldnt even check-in since the room was dirty and had to change room twice to get another clean room. Its a great location but would love the staff to be more approachable and helpful.
