Came out March 16th to 19th for work and I'm a pretty avid boardwalk jogger from the PB "Palm Tree" right outside Wahines shop all the way down to the end of Belmont Park (The park bench by the garbage can) as it's an almost perfect 4 mile run and I usually stay at one of the hotels near Mission Bay but thought: "Ehhh, why don't I just stay ON the boardwalk this time!"
I have to pick hotels that do gov per-diem and while Ocean Park Inn mentions they do per-deim you can't pick that rate on their online reservation site. So I called and spoke with Patrick and got my per-diem reservation no problem and even mentioned if they weren't busy they'd get me a great room.
Patrick got me THE perfect room on the first floor: Room 102. That would be the one with the pool & hot tub right outside the door and the patio is 4ft from the boardwalk entrance door. I was in SD Hotel Heaven.
The rooms are so so, you can tell they re-did the bathrooms and they're quite nice. Hot water comes in 3 seconds and while I wish they had more hooks for things in the bathroom (e.g., bikini/boardshorts, towels, etc) it wasn't that bad as I hung most of my running and beach gear out on the side of one of the uber cushy chairs on the patio.
I did not have breakfast there in the morning as theirs about 50 great places to eat right around the hotel (Breakfast at The Green Flash (a 1 min walk) or at World Famous (a 3 min walk) is the best!).
The only time noise was an issue was the first night as it was pre-St. Paddy's Day partying at the Firehouse Bar across the alleyway but once in my room it was pretty quite by the boardwalk and I had the screen door open most nights. The last night some hippies were doing the bongo thing on the grass right outside, but they stopped around 9:50pm and it was nice and quite after that. However, I could see if you are on the East side of the hotel it could get noisy on the weekends.
The mornings are the best at this hotel and on the boardwalk as only the early walkers/joggers are out and you can hear the early wave sets coming in ... so so so peaceful and awesome. Highly recommend you slap on the flip-flops, get up at 0630 and get a good 1/2 hour walk in on the beach. Nothing better than that when the sun is coming up ...
Parking there is pretty good if you have a smaller car. Trust me: having a garage as big as theirs in the basement is UNHEARD of in PB. If you do come in a big ol' Expedition or Escalade you might have problems maneuvering down there.
The staff was always helpful and willing to go the extra mile and can't thank Patrick enough for hooking me up on this trip.
If you're thinking about which Boardwalk/Beach hotel to snag in PB/MB ... this is the one you want!
