Four Points by Sheraton San Diego
Ranked #213 of 278 Hotels in San Diego
Reviewed 10 September 2008

Stayed for two nights on Sept. 5-7.

Overall: They are still doing some remodeling but they are about 90% done.

Outside Decor: Clean with lots of trees. Fountain located at front entrance with check-in desk located to the right off the entrance and cafe and restaurant located on the left. Since it's located within a golf range, it's not bad.

Parking: The only Sheraton in San Diego with FREE PARKING!! The hotel and parking lot is about a 1/2 block in from the main street. The parking lot is a bit dark at night so it's best to have a timed-delay for your headlights. When you arrive or parking for the night, park in the right lot that loops around the building as this lot is closer to the rooms. The parking lot of the left lot is closer to the restaurant and cafe (not best to park here on Sundays). Parking lot could be repaved and lines drawn because you'll notice that people will park all randomly in the first lot you arrive in.

Interior: Very nice lobby until you get to the room "hallways" (see pictures). Like what others have said, the area where the rooms are located is very prison like. The way the building is formed, there are 3 hallways that all look alike and there is no signage tell you which rooms are in which area. There are sofas located in the middle and ends of each hallway. The elevator badly needs maintenance. Don't be surprise if it waddles and shakes a little. Other than that, it's pretty bare.

Rooms: Very clean, except for the tub tiles. There is microwave, fridge, 20" TV and desk. Plenty of channels to watch including HBO and HBO family. There's Cartoon Network and Nick, but sorry no Disney. Beds are clean and comfortable. The AC/Heat unit is standard and loud like others, too bad they didn't install quite units. Minor differences b/w the pictures you see here and what's in the room. The pictures in this website was for a room located in the 1st floor and I stayed on the 3rd floor. There are no views for any of the rooms due to the trees and layout of place.

Area: Even though it's away from downtown and other tourist hot spots, you're very close to everything. You're no more than 10 min. drive to SeaWorld, Downtown, Airport, Old Town, and beaches. If you're only staying for the weekend, don't bother renting a car. They have shuttles that will pick you up and take you around....BUT you must call ahead of time and confirm.

This hotel is next to another smaller airport for private planes and helicopters, but you'll never hear anything. It's also very close to 805 & 163, but you'll never hear anything either.

Food: Your blocks within a Korean district with lots of restaurants and grocery shopping. When exiting the hotel parking lot, turn right, go two blocks to Convoy St, turn right and starting from there and for the next mile there will be lots of places to eat. There are also lots of other places to eat on Balboa Ave and Clairemont Mesa Blvd (these are cross streets). A 24 hour Walmart and Food4Less is located on the 805 side of Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

We had a problem upon check-in -- our AC unit was dead. We waited about two hours for the repairs to take place (and were afraid to unpack, for fear we'd have to eventually move to another room). Long story short, they took care of the problem after a few phone calls and comped us for breakfast for two for the rest of our stay -- five nights! That kind of attention will keep us coming back.

Pros: Convenient, easy-to-access location; exceptionally cordial staff; nice rooms with a new fridge and microwave; nice pool; free wi-fi; free parking; free daily bottle of water and USA Today.

Negatives: (1) Very strange layout of the hotel. There is an average-looking lobby and several long, very wide, very dated-looking (almost industrial-looking) hallways where the rooms are located. None of the hallways is marked, so you have no idea where your room is. (2) Ridiculously small "fitness center." Why bother? Maybe both of these problems will be eliminated with the ongoing renovation. If so, this will be a very nice property and a good value.

Overall, we would definitely stay here again.

The property appears to be about 90% done with a renovation, and the results are very nice. Our room was beautiful; nice decor, very comfortable. The staff was unfailingly helpful and knowledgable. The lobby is very attractive. There is a 9 hole golf course attached to the hotel with very reasonable fees, and you can rent clubs.
There is a restaurant that is located adjacent to the main lobby which serves breakfast, lunch & dinner; it was very pricey and we avoided it after the first day.
However, this is a very strange property. Three wings, wide, open interior hallways and an atrium style gives the place a cavernous, cold feeling. Every Saturday night, the little bar area is taken over by a over 30's singles club which means that area is off limits to hotel guests. Sunday mornings, a meeting room directly off the lobby is the site of a very large church service.
I would not stay there again.

Our visit at this hotel was a disaster starting in the first 15 minutes - our room was in the middle of mobilized scaffolding and workers painting and shouting to each other in the vast open hallways (after we were told there was no construction going on near the rooms) We changed rooms hoping to get a little rest before dinner but it was not to be - the cleaning staff did the same thing - shouted instructions to each other across the open halls- one woman inspecting the rooms after they had been cleaned open and allowed the doors to slam while she went in and did it again on her way out. The fan to heat and cool sounded like a truck, the tub did not drain, the closet is ill designed - you cannot hang clothes in it nicely. They advertised complimentary water but we had none in our room. There is supposed to be a Manager on Duty 24 hours a day but 8am Sunday morning there was not. The hallway noise from employees and other guests was loud and perpetual - they do not have any quality control in force. We checked out early and have gotten no satisfactory response from the hotel itself. Stay somewhere else!

First off let me say let this place has a lot of potential and I'm sure it will get there but for now please do yourself a favor and stay away for a little while.

The hotel is undergoing extensive renovation, this itself is okay and can be lived with however once your room floods TWICE because of the renovations below and above you, you'd do a lot better to stay away for 6 months or so. Sometime during my first night there was a blockage in one of the rooms being renovated either below me or above me and an air bubble caused my bathroom sink to overflow into the bathroom (according to maintenance), covering the entire bathroom floor and all MY TOILETRIES with brown gunky water. This was not cool, however maintenance did show up fast and cleaned it up, then supposedly snaked the drain while I was out that day. However the next morning the exact same thing happened, needless to say I was livid. Renovation is one thing unlivable rooms is another. Management did quickly move me though.

As you can see in one of the photos another guest posted there is construction material in the halls, that is no joke, it really is there and the hotel smells like a construction site. Well at least my room did, the strong odor of paint is very evident and the rest of the hotel air is very.....I don’t know....muggy. Bottom line is, this is just not a very good place to stay right now. Oh did I mention that the gym equipment was sub par at best. One treadmill, no water, huge workout towels (think beach towels) and broken weight equipment. Uhh the more I type the more depressed I'm getting, since at the time of this review I am still staying there ;(

On the bright side though, the free internet (very slow) and free water is a plus. The rooms are nice if they don’t flood and reek and the microwave and fridge are a great addition. Still the smell of paint ---- come on.

The pros just do not outweigh the cons; they should close this place down and just bang this renovation out.

Lucky for me I have another reservation downtown this Friday at another Sheraton and can not wait for that day to come. Anyway just don't do it, please take my advice and stay away. I'm no complainer and usually suck it up, in fact this is the first online review I have ever done -- it was that bad and I just can't stand to think of someone else going through this.

To be completely fair though if you wait six months and they actually do finish the renovations and fix that gym, this will be a very nice place. God help you though if their not done yet in 6 months though.

Light renovations? ................Not. Out side our door was apx. 30 feet by 15 feet if desks, chairs, bedding, dust and the strong smell of carpet glue pilled 6 feet high and we were not the only ones with this view. I was embarrassed that things were so under construction. There was a couple in the parking lost arguing about the hotel. This is not a kid friendly place because a small hand could easily grasp something sharp in these piles. Best to stay away, event if you are adventuress type for at least 6 months or more.
