It's been more than 15 years since we have been here. At that time, the hotel was sort of shabby elegance but still nice enough for us to return. Since then, they have renovated and updated but not so much to have lost it's charm. It is a beautiful hotel located in the center of the action district.

Our room was a little tight but that was our choice. Furnishings are antique appearing and in excellent order. The room and bath were spotlessly clean and the room staff was inobtrusive. We wanted a little special service and the concierge, Heather was cheerfully accommodating. Climate control operated perfectly and almost silently. The bar and breakfast in the courtyard open to the sky are a special treat.

This hotel remains my first choice when visiting San Diego. I often wonder how they can offer such superb accommodations at a very reasonable cost.

First time staying here and definitely will be back. Very comfy and clean hotel. The stuff(I have to point out to Nancy) was professional and polite. Walking distance to good restaurants and of course the beach. A++++

The Horton Grand was one of the more reasonably-priced alternatives listed among hotels for a meeting at the Convention Center. It specializes in charm, but it is also efficient, a short walk to the Convention Center, and surrounded by great dining alternatives for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The bar is a great place to get together with people. The internet connection is fast, flawless, and free, which is what we business travelers need. The staff is wonderful. There's nothing wrong with a good business hotel (Hilton, Marriott, etc.), but why not enjoy the décor while you're at it? (I am not sure of their fitness alternatives, but I chose one of many great jogging routes, and you can always run the "Steps of Death" at the Convention Center if you want a good workout!)

Dear Hochbean,
Thank you for an amazing review of the Horton Grand Hotel! We agree that we have a lot to offer that your big chain hotels do not. We are indeed just a short walk to the convention center and right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter with hundreds of great choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner including our own Ida Bailey’s now open. For fitness alternatives we have a great relationship with the Yoga studio across the street or the 24 Hour Fitness Center two blocks down. But, with our amazing location, so close to the water I am glad you found a great jogging route. Yes, the Stairs of Death will definitely give you a great workout.
Hurry back, we enjoyed having you here!

The hotel shows it age only a little, but this gem is worth trying. It is easily within walking distance of all kinds of great restaurants and bars in the Gaslamp. The courtyard is great when it is all lite up and they have drinks and music.

Front desk especially working with Nancy was great - very accomodating and courteous. Hotel is in very nice location, closer to convention center, Petco park, restaurants, and safe. Jogging each morning was fun.

This hotel is absolutely charming. If you are looking to see a piece of history in San Diego and don't want to stay in one of the if chain hotels, then this is a great place for you.

The room overlooked the courtyard. Had a great balcony. There was a fireplace in the room. It was a great experience all the way around. Everything worked in the room. Took a minute to find the handle for the toilet. Loved the old wood headboard for the bed. And the location of the hotel is great!

Nancy made our stay great. She found us a room when she wasn't sure if she had any. Even though she was swamped at the front desk, she still took the time with us. Thanks!

If you are expecting a full 4-star boutique hotel the Horton Grand isn't quite there. If you are expecting all the amenities of a large chain hotel like a Hilton or Marriott, the Horton isn't quite there either. Rooms are well furnished and comfortable, the courtyard area is a great place to meet, and the hotel is certainly convenient to both the Gaslamp district and convention center.

On the downside, the restaurant was closed and the bar seemed to open more when they were interested. Since I was there for a conference at the Convention Center these things didn't bother me and actually with a large number of colleagues staying we were able to make the bar and courtyard areas informal meeting places.

Room was tiny but comfortable bed. No closet and armoire only had 6 hangars. I was on ground floor so was a bit worried about noise but was on sidestreet and not facing the nightclub across the street so noise at night wasn't bad.

If you have realistic expectations about some things being just not quite up to 4 star standards, then you'll enjoy your stay.

Dear JDWells,
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay. To update our hotel information since your stay we have opened our restaurant currently just for breakfast but by the first of August it will be open all day. We do have regular early evening hours in the bar so I am not sure what happened during your stay but I have passed your comments on to our bar manager along with the comment regarding a lack of hangars in the rooms to our housekeeping department.
Since we are a historic hotel all of our rooms are a little bit different but as you pointed out our rooms are well furnished and our location to the convention center is so convenient.
The courtyard is one of our best features and does lend itself well as an informal meeting place so I am so glad you and your colleagues took advantage of such a relaxing setting.
Thank you again for staying at the Horton Grand and hope to see you next time you are in San Diego.
