“amazing property with antique furnishing”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

This is an amazing property with an antique finish to the entire hotel. Really centrally located and amazing place to stay. I highly recommend this place . The charges are very appropriate for what it has to offer.

Room Tip: look for the sea facing rooms. Amazing view

My 17 year old daughter and I decided to take a trip to San Diego and just "wing it" for a week in warmth and sunshine. We booked our stay at the Westgate on a whim and could not have been more pleased with the outcome. The service was OUTSTANDING - and the chief concierge flawlessly directed us to everything we had on our mind. From the perfect breakfast spot in the Gaslamp district, to the perfect bike rental company (they delivered them right to the hotel for us!) to the perfect sushi bar....she was spot on every time! We were able to walk to EVERYTHING - even the Boardwalk - which made it easy to explore the city. As adventurous as I tend to be, I'm certain that I will default back to the Westgate the next time I visit San Diego. They just know how to do it right!

Enter the world of The Westgate Hotel, and you enter into a world of elegance, majesty and graciousness few places in the world offer.

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at the Westgate, and from the moment our cab door from the airport was opened, eveyone, from the doorman on, treated us to a specialness one might give to heads of state. All that was missing was papparazzi.

Louis the 16th furniture, grand mirrors by makers who's names I cannot pronounce, Baccarat crystal chandeliers and more, greet the guest in a lobby two stories tall. Greeting from the desk staff included smiles and the notion that they had been waiting for us. In fact, if memory serves, I believe those were their words!

Dinner, presented by Mathieu Courtin, was a gastronomic wonder. Simple Dover Sole was transformed into a culinary work of art. His wine recommendation and how it enhanced the food, brought us to his complete mercy and expertise. It was an amazement. How he brought divergent, even competing, tastes to a flaming Baked Alaska and harmonized them, astounds me even now. The next evening with Salmon and Cherries Jubilee...well you get the idea.

Turn down service in our rooms with mints, of course. Ice bucket filled, bath robe set out, of course. Quiet music filling the bedroom to greet the guest, who have entered the room, not from the hallway, but from a pleasant foyer off the hallway, marvelous.

The entire hotel is resplendent in draperies and furniture belonging to an era of craftmanship and a devotion to beauty seldom, if ever, seen in today's world. And, if you are lucky, you may make the acquaintance of the Chief Concierge, Shraddha Carlin. With a sophisticated and delightful exuberance she goes far out her way, (and even out of the building) to help every guest solve the most trivial matter.

When you are in San Diego with a desire for true elegance and graciousness, that hotel on Coronado is not the one. The Westgate is.

Room Tip: We had room 997. It was delightful.

The hotel is very impressive from the moment you walk into the foyer to the point of the room. The room is very spacious and again a nice throwback to a forgotten era. There is free wifi in the hotel and although we did not use the pool, we could see it and it looked amazing with a running track along the outside.

The hotel staff were very friendly and can not be faulted. I would highly recommend staying here, although parking was expensive which there are cheaper places to park nearby. Although we did not suffer from much noise I know some of my work colleagues complained about it being very noisy.

Not including the airport, this hotel is one of the first encounters I had with people on my visit to San Diego. Here are some of the more 'objective' qualities of the hotel:

Very close to EVERYTHING in the Gaslamp district. A little more on the edge of the district, as you can see the Orange line trolley is literally right behind the hotel, but by no means an inconvenient location - in fact, just the opposite. The Horton Plaza mall is right across the street and everything else is within walking distance. Balboa Park is a little bit of a hike but even then it's doable if you're up for the walk (there are busses otherwise, of course). The only thing I didn't get to see (which, to tell you the truth wasn't a big deal for me) was Petco Park, for which MAYBE you might want to stay in another hotel if you're in SD only to catch an event.

There's a $15+tax facility fee that covers pool access, internet, free newspapers, etc. No big deal, but make sure to factor that in if you're basing your hotel on price.

Valet parking is available, although we arrived without a car so I can't really speak to that aspect, but the valets were quite personable and friendly.

The more subjective part of the review:
This hotel is an incredible find and greatly enhanced our stay here in San Diego. The concierge service was quite friendly, and the attendants were quite eager to provide directions, recommendations, etc., and were able to direct us anywhere we needed to go. We got in from the airport around 11:30AM knowing that we may have had to wait until 3PM for a normal check-in time, and we were just hoping to keep our luggage there. They told us that they could actually check us in immediately, but that if we were willing to wait until 12:30 that we could have a room with their best view. We left our luggage and went out to grab a quick bite, and they texted me ~12:05 to tell me that the room was available to check into whenever we were ready. The view was, as claimed, fantastic and overlooked the pool as well as the NBC building, as well as much of the Gaslamp district.

We had booked on Orbitz and for some reason, this 4-star hotel seemed to be on-par price-wise with the 3-star hotels. That plus the reviews made this a no-brainer to at least try out, but I was a little hesitant in case it was "too good to be true." Next time, I would definitely be willing to pay more to come back here.

The room was super clean with a comfortable bed, coffee packets in the bathroom, and a beautiful shower/bathroom area, with a closet to hang everything up and with a decent iron and ironing board. The windows let in an incredible amount of light and air, and there's even a small "terrace" to stand on and admire the view.

Come here, and you won't be sorry you did.

Rather a change from the usual sleek and business-like hotels with very elegant decor and furnishings - almost from another time & place!
Very friendly staff, generous room size and ideally located. Will stay here again when bacon in San Diego.

Hotel was in good location and very clean. Decor was a bit old fashioned. Room was large with big vanity. We could hear the train and sirens outside but it did not really bother us. We could hear the neighbors leaving in the morning also. Cookies were good but hard to come by. We didn't eat in the hotel. The restaurant and bar were not very lively.
