First of all any of us can stay at a chain type hotel. They are a dime a dozen. The best hotels can often be the ones that retain that charm from yesteryear. I prefer to look for a hotel in a city that has traditional look and of course been remodeled to today's convenience standards. This is the US Grant. A stately building in the middle of downtown San Diego. Fantastic old world lobby, great rooms with a wonderful soft bed. The bathrooms are well appointed. Wonderfully close to the Gas Lamp district.
Lastly for total entertainment value like in the movie "Rear Window", and for an added bonus, especially if you are staying during the summer, ask for a room facing the The Plaza hotel. It is a hotel across the street which amounts to a flop-house. There is no air conditioning there- so all their windows are open during the summer. Exactly as James Stewart would have it. Did I mention the "P" has fallen off the sign for the Plaza? It now reads Laza.More
