I will let you all in on a little secret, or a personal preference of mine, in this hotel. This guest alludes to the "rooms facing the front"... in my opinion, among the best views in this hotel are actually in our Accessible King bedded category. On floors 5-7 in these rooms, which are the same price as our superior rooms, i think they have the best balance of great view and quiet location. Completely shielded from outside street noise and very few neighbors to worry about, you look out over our rooftop garden toward the historic balboa theater. When the horton plaza is renovated this winter, these will be some of the best views on property. Not what one would expect from an accessible room! Just a tip from an insider.... Oh, did i mention they are some of the only rooms with bathtubs also? Jared, Director of Front Office

Spent the weekend at the US Grant with my two daughters. A very good experience. The hotel is in a good location for walking to things downtown (the Gaslamp district, Horton Plaza, etc). I got a good price on our room on the hotel website.
The staff was always very helpful - in particular the valet staff who always greeted us by name and had our car available very quickly.

Room Tip: The front of the building probably has the best views. We were on one side of the building and just...

We had a nice stay. However there's not a spa on site nor a pool. Great location. Walking distance to all kinds of things. Mall, food, etc. We would def stay here again. Really good staff. Very helpful on recommendations.

Proud to hear that our staff impressed you! Yes you are correct, our pool is shared with the Westin Gaslamp across the way from us and our massage options are with one of our preferred partners in the room or in our spa suite. We hope to welcome you back to our beautiful hotel soon! Jared, Director of Front Office

3rd stay here and we weren't disappointed. Easy walk to good food, comfortable beds, great service. If you end up with a bad view of the roof don't hesitate to request a different room. They have moved us easily on two occasions.

Third time is a charm - for the third time! Thank you momof4inaz for the Triple Crown. Our team is delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. We do have a courtyard rooms with roof view that is true, but then our signature concierge will recommend you so many amazing places to visit; you won't have much time to look at it anyways. (the roof I mean) The shortest distance to good food is right on the lobby level, Grant Grill! Free tip for your hopefully fourth stay with us.

Our family stayed at the US Grant using American Express' Fine Hotel and Resorts program. Between the great room rate and the meal and breakfast credits, this was one of the best hotel deals I've seen in some time.
First, the location is excellent especially if you want to explore downtown San Diego.
Our arrival was smooth and our bags were efficiently taken from our rental and up to the room. The main entrance is from the car port in the back of the hotel which makes the trip to the check in desk at the front of the lobby a little confusing. The front desk staff was very friendly and efficient especially about explaining the benefits of the Amex program.
Room was was well proportioned with two double beds, tastefully decorated and very clean. We all especially liked the bathroom with natural light. I don't usually like rooms in older hotels given the prevailing standards when hotels such as the US Grant were built but Starwood does a good job with this property.
Common areas are well appointed especially the lobby area which has plenty of seats and space.
We had dinner at the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised by the good food and excellent service.
Check out was as efficient as the check in process. Would have been helpful to have a couple more bell staff in the lobby to help us negotiate our luggage from the lobby to our car.

Great place, you could not find a better place in downtown San Diego. There was a great restaurant IN and right NEXT to the hotel. Very convenient! It has a great location if you want to stay downtown, and close to the GasLamp District. Room was very comfortable. Staff was very friendly and the lobby was AMAZING. The turn down staff were prompt and always did their job. The bathroom was a tad smaller than expected (from what was seen in the pictures). Overall, I had a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: PRICEY parking fee PER night ($39/PerNight)!!

Glad you liked the lobby Justin! Here is some historical trivia about our lobby... this lobby is not the original design of the hotel in 1910! Just before construction was to begin on the lobby the San Francisco earthquake happened that leveled most of the city. All materials, including blue prints, were redirected up north for the rebuilding effort. What was to be our lobby still exists today in the historic Palace Hotel (coincidentally also a Luxury Collection hotel) in San Francisco. I still think ours is great though! We booked and prepaid for our room online through a third party reservation site several weeks before the trip. When we arrived it was nearly midnight, the valet warmly greeted us and directed us to the front desk. Although we a reserved a double room, the front desk clerk informed me that our reservation was for a single king size bed. I presented him with a copy of the emailed confirmation I recieved from the third party company. The clerk stepped away to presumably speak with a manager about the discrepancy. Upon his reappearance, he informed me that although I had reserved a double room with the third party company, the company had reserved a single king size room for me. He also informed me that the only available room was the king size room, but that a rollaway bed would be available to make up for the error for that night and that we would be moved to a double room the following day. We made our way up to the room and began to get settled in. Our luggage arrived shortly thereafter. I inquired with the porter about the status of our rollaway bed. He told me he would likewise inquire and get back to me. Ten minutes later, I recieved a call from a manager, I presumed, informing me that no rollaway beds were available for the evening. He was polite and apologetic and during the course of our conversation offered to waive the valet parking fee for the night as a courtesy for the mixup. I accepted and he informed me that everything would be straightened out in the morning.

In the morning, per the front desk clerk's instructions, we readied our luggage to be moved to our new room (for us, while we were out), before heading out on the first day of vacation. We picked up our car at the valet desk, were given a couple of bottles of water and excellent directions to our first destination. Upon arriving back at the hotel, I stopped by the front desk to pick up the key cards to our new room. The clerk seemed to know about our situation as soon as she heard my name. She informed me that our luggage had already been moved to our new room, the Executive Planner's Suite. She even added, "You're really going to like this room". She was absolutely correct. The previous room, had it had two beds, would have been adequate. The suite was 4 times bigger and luxurious. Whoever decided to right the previous night's wrong with this, absolutely won us over.

There were no more hiccups in our stay. All of the staff we interacted with very friendly and helpful. The hotel was obviously old (small elevators), but remarkably well renovated and beautifully decorated (like walking through an art museum).

Although our stay started a bit inauspiciously, the room upgrade, professionalism of the staff, beauty of the hotel and proximity to our vacation event sites made the first leg of our vacation a time we won't soon forget.

This is a fantastic review as it highlights one of the things that I believe truly sets apart good service from "being nice" or "textbook service": the recovery process. Compensation is just a gesture, but when you can act on the needs and create the experience of a recovery, that is how you build loyalty. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to win you back and we are so happy that it worked out so well! We look forward to your next stay! Jared, Director of Front Office
