The hotel was very clean and comfortable. The staff was fantastic and very courteous. Overall, the hotel was a bargain! The price was very reasonable and the breakfast bar, which was included in the price, was delicious.
About David Birt, the general manager, here is a man who really cares about the property he manages. He was very friendly and helpful. Made sure that we were totally satisfied with out stay.
I would totally recommend the Best Western Lamplighter Inn to anyone traveling on a budget.

A little far away from downtown SD but for the value and price it was a great find!!! The staff was helpful the guest were nice. It may be on a busy road but it was extremely quite. The room for continental breakfast was very nice. The room we stayed in was a kitchen suite the ceiling was slopped which gave it an interesting look. The pool was very clean and it was a nice area of town. Easy access on and off highways as well.

This review is for those who have had a bad experience at a Best Western, as my review will show you that each hotel is different, as their management are different. I am VERY picky traveler and usually stay at the Hyatt, Westin or the Sheraton.

My family and I stayed here from Dec 23-Dec25 in a family suite, which was the size of two regular rooms. Their suite consisted of a kitchenette, a bathroom, a living room (sofabed), and another room with 2 queens. There is one tv in the living room and another one in the bedroom. There are two outdoor access to our room, one from the living room and one from the bedroom. The rooms and most importantly the bathroom was VERY clean. The two queen mattresses were firm and the sofabed was thin. The pool was clean, heated and open from 8-10 everyday. There are towels on the loungers already. Breakfast consisted of juice, bagels, cereal, hot waffles, and boiled eggs. There is one computer in the lobby with internet access and is complimentary for guests.

The amenities are on par with most other really good Best Westerns but the most important detail you would need to know is that the service of both the hotel manager as well as the room stewardesses are absolutely magnificent! For those of you visiting San Diego for the first time, you definitely need to talk to Len, the manager (the one who is always replying through Tripadvisor) because he has alot of details on what to do and see.

This is THE hotel to choose if you are bringing any pets with you, as the property caters to pets (there is a little pet area at the end of the property, away from the main street).

We booked this trip along with a cruise from our well trusted travel agent and he has definitely gained our loyalty after this trip, as the price was right and the value immeasurable.

After reading the Tripadvisor reviews, we decided to book our six-night stay here. This was our first trip to San Diego and we weren't quite sure about the neighborhoods, and I must admit I was a bit hesitant given the great deal we received for a room with a kitchen and the extra for our dog. We were not at all disappointed!!!!
The rooms were basic, but clean (the most important thing to most!) There was a queen bed and sofa bed so plenty of room for my husband, daughter and me. Our room had a full kitchen, complete with fridge, stove and microwave. Great setup! The complimentary breakfast was plenty to get us started in the morning; toast, cereal, oatmeal, boiled eggs, pastries and fruit were fine although I must admit I wasn't a big fan of the coffee. The pet area was a bit on the small side so we typically would take our dog for a walk in the morning to take care of her business.
Many of the reviews reference the small breakfast area. It probably is much more crowded during the summer, but during Thanksgiving week, we had no problems with seating.
For our visits to Sea World, the Zoo, Old Town and all the other touristy spots, the drive was roughly 15-20 minutes, more or less depending upon the time of day. It never seemed to take very long and was an easy drive with our GPS. Easy access on/off the freeways. We found parking at the hotel to be no problem.
We will definitely stay here again on our next visit, especially if we bring our dog, as there aren't many nice, clean hotels/motels which allow dogs weighing more than 30 lbs (ours weighs 50+)
Thanks, BW Lamplighter, for the wonderful stay!!!

Chosen after looking at tripadvisor and not disappointed. Stayed for 2 days at a great rate of 102$ incl taxes etc for a double queen room. The staff were friendly, efficient and we had no problems. The room on the ground floor was standard: TV, coffee maker, bathroom, the only thing missing was a fridge. The pool was good , mad brits and englishman in at 2000, too cool for the locals but warm for us! Breakfast was basic , not the best we'd had consisting of cereal/toast/doughnuts. It was near small conveniance stores and about 5 mins drive from the I8 (?) freeway. Overall a good budget stay in a quiet location.

Thank you for your review of our hotel. We enjoyed having you stay with us. I would like to respond about the review you gave regarding our breakfast. You had mentioned in your review that the breakfast items we serve our cereal / toast & donuts. We actually do not have donuts. Our breakfast items consist of: Waffles/Bagels/3 types of cereals/fresh fruit (apples & oranges) hard boiled eggs/orange juice & apple juice along with fresh danishes & assorted pasteries. Fresh coffee each morning (regular & decaf) hot coco & oatmeal. We do look forward to having you stay with us again in the future. Sincerely - David Birt/General Manager

After a 2 day nightmare just up the street at the howard Johnson the Best Western was like paradise. the staff was amazing and the room was even better! clean, spacious, and organized.
they even bumped us up to a mini suite after explaining what we had been through. i would recomend this hotel to anyone working on a budget and still looking for great service.

I recently stayed here two nights in dual queen bed second floor room booked under discount rate via Costco website. Location is extremely convenient to metro San Diego attractions (less than five miles to San Diego Zoo / Balboa Park). This along with previous reviews is why I selected it. Property is relatively close to SDSU, so area has a college feel. Banks, eateries, supermarkets, drug stores, hospital, gas stations and freeway access points are all close at hand. The L&L Hawaiian BBQ place at the corner (of El Cajon and College) served great take-out fare. I will say that the area is older, and I wouldn't recommend wandering about alone too late in the evening. At check-in, the female desk clerk was pleasant, friendly, and provided great information. Check-out was less involved and less noteworthy. Property is older, but kept well, second level is stair access only, and exterior access room was clean, though the HVAC unit did give off a strange odor at times during operation. I did not sample the breakfast, or pool area, so have no opinion regarding these amenities. Parking stalls fill quickly at night and were quite narrow; I did worry about finding door dings on my new van, but smaller vehicles should manage. If you're looking to be impressed with your room at a higher rate, I recommend the brand new Residence Inn Oceanside, CA where I also stayed during this trip (convenient to Legoland, beaches, pier). The Lamplighter Inn's selling attributes are price point, location, convenience and service in reasonably clean accommodations.
