“Pleasantly Surprised by the Bristol”
Reviewed 26 September 2009

I was down on San Diego for business which I am about every 6 weeks or so and my office put me here - they like to try out new places and know that I'm typically game. While it is not my top choice for places I've stayed around the Gaslight, it is definitely not at the bottom of the list either.

The hotel is completely renovated, but still had a lot of the old charms of the old building that it is - lots of original molding and tons of character. The beds are really comfortable and the rooms are remarkably spacious (I wonder if this was a studio apartment building at one point and they just took out the kitchens?) and pretty comfortable. Free wifi is always a plus as well!

The location is a little on the outskirts of the trendy area - you are across from the bus station which I had a commanding view of (as well as heard - didn't realize my window was cracked all night - but once I saw that, I closed it and it was super quiet).

In the morning I used the workout room. It was a bit sparse (or modest as the front desk guy told me the night before) but the treadmill functioned more or less and I got in a decent run.

I also had a chance to have breakfast in their bistro - the Daisy. I had the Parisian omelet as everything else was rather meaty and I don't eat that...it was quite tasty!

It was between this place and the Sofia Hotel which is pretty much across the street. However it was either small cramped rooms at the Sofia for less or a bigger room with free internet at the Bristol for a little more. Just like the woman i spoke with on the phone, I definitely got a better deal booking with the Bristol. Which is another thing, i'd suggest calling and seeing if they can match the cheaper price you see on the internet websites. i was able to get a bit of a better rate for the room.

Superior King Guest Room - VERY spacious. & clean. cute decor. Flat screen TV, definitely not HD tho. No HBO but other decent channels- TBS, nickelodeon, TNT, etc. Ipod compatible radio system. Round table with chairs. Our view was the street with a small sliver of the water out in the distance. bed was very comfy and big. Bathroom was clean and the shower area itself was pretty spacious. Nice Vanity mirror in the bathroom. and another vanity area outside the bathroom.

Location - One block from Horton Plaza Mall, great for picking up last minute things at the CVS there. The plaza is also one of the Old Town Trolley Tour stops . 10 to 15 min walk to Fifth where the center of all the bars/restaurants are at, maybe 10-15 minute walk? About 15 minutes from the airport by taxi. We took the MTS to the zoo (10 minute ride) but the bus stop is by horton plaza one way and right on the corner of the hotel block on the way back. I'd say its far to walk from the Seaport village and Marina area, we took the MTS trolley. but the trolley stop is a block away from the hotel too.
*On a side note, the San Diego public transit system is SO easy to take and it's clean and cheap! $5 for a day pass to use bus or trolley! they even have a number u can call to tell you what route to take to get to wherever ur going.

Likes --cleanliness of the hotel/room, size of room, free internet!, staff was friendly & helpful with directions & other needs =), location

Dislikes -
a.) thermostat was weird. it was either OFF or freezing despite the settings. i ended up getting sick towards the end of the trip. but it was still a good stay.
b.) so trivial but the lighting annoyed me. the one switch turns on like 1 dim light and the rest are lamps u have to turn on manually to get decent light. it's hard when u're in a rush!
c.) and a full length mirror wouldn't hurt.

We only stayed for 1 night and it was very nice. The room had a nice view of the city and a little bit of the bay. Our room was very clean and had a nice flat screen tv. The bed was really comfy. The location was great to walk to the Gaslamp and have dinner. We will book this hotel again in Dec.

We stayed 8 nights at this hotel and would thoroughly recommend it. It was an excellent location close to shopping and transport. Staff were very helpful and friendly, rooms were modern and clean (if a little small). We would definitely stay here again.

Very Nice Hotel, Clean & Tidy and very central for Downtown. Easy to get to with a car. It is within walking distance of many many restuarants.
No Pool available this is a bit of a drawback.
Main problem is that there are a lot of Down & Outs hang about the hotel area. They do not really bother you most of the time apart from if you go outside for a smoke then they can pester the life out of you

This is one of the best choices we made during our trip to San Diego. We expected a lot and got even more. The staff was very professional and helpful. The rooms are nice and comfortable and the hotel is quiet (although the streets outside are not). This is an excellent deal for it's location and accomodations! We will choose The Bristol for future visits to San Diego.

Thank you to all staff at the hotel. The rooms were lovely, plush pillows and comfy beds, big TVs and plenty of hangers in the wardrobe (which was a major plus for 3 friends sharing a room). Free internet in the lobby and good valet parking service. Location is wonderful, right beside all the amenities in the Gaslamp district from restaurants to shopping. Horton Plaza shopping centre is a 5 min walk away. Everyone was very helpful no matter how trivial our questions were, thanks again to all at the Hotel.
