Large 2-story resort on a large parcel right on Mission Bay--great location. Rooms have been renovated and are nicely furnished and comfortable. They really cater to kids and families; they have movies by the pool on summer nights and a shuttle to Sea World. Staff is very solicitous.
A quibble: Fees (parking and resort.). The resort fee is silly:$9 for WiFi and boarding passes?

We recently discovered this gem of a place in San Diego. It was our first visit to the city and we loved it as there are so many things to do. The Dana is in a good position with a regular bus just outside the door running to the bus station near the Old Town from where you can catch further transport to the places of interest.
There were lots of families staying at the Dana and it is well served for an enjoyable family stay with two pools, bikes and lots of walking trails nearby. There is an excellent bistro on site which serves a good variety of good quality food.
It all sits in a lovely garden setting. We even were able to take a free shuttle to the airport for our flight to Los Angeles. We would thoroughly recommend this place.

Room Tip: There is no lift so those with mobility problems would be best served by ground rooms.

We normally stay with friends in PB, OB or La Jolla, but on this trip we brought along 5 teenagers and as many bicycles. So, we decided to get 2 rooms at this gem. Our rooms were not upgraded but offered a pleasant view of the marina and an easy walk to the beautiful pool. Plus, since the rooms were not ready in a timely manner we were given credit at the Firefly cafe. The appetizers and draft beer selection were fantastic. The staff was friendly but a little harried due to the flow of customers. Our keys didn't work after the first morning of our two night stay and their public computer was not working. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and will book again in the future.

We had a couple of nights here recently and loved it. The first night was a little disappointing (but no fault of the hotel) we got woken up at 0430 by the family in the next room and it wasnt just the kids making the noise. The parents made no effort at all to keep their own voices down or to quieten their children and thought it would be a good idea to have a sing song whilst their neighbors were trying to sleep. I approached the hotel reception the following morning to enquire whether they were leaving that day. Unfortunately they were not but they managed to move us to another room right then and there so we were rapt with that. I just feel sorry for the next guests who would be allocated next to them. We had a meal at the Firefly restaurant which was fantastic and had pizzas from the same place the next night and they would be the best pizzas we have ever had. If we return to San Diego we will definitely stay here again, thanks a lot.

I've stayed many times at this place..and love the location and the views from the Premium Bay View Rooms. But, each time I come there is something else that takes away from those two positive points. First, they charge for parking ($20) and because they book a lot of weddings, the guiests of the weddings take up the spots hotel guests would use. So, if you return on a Friday or Saturday night from being out..forget about having a spot to park. Also, again, the wedding guests get DRUNK and cause trouble; either in the rooms where they are packed in 8-10 to one room..and drinking all night, or in the lobby, again drunk. They have "guards" but don't seem trained to do much at all and change constantly. There are homeless people who camp on the grass area right outside your room. I noticed they have installed a padlock on the level 1 room patios, not that it would be helpful since they can easily climb over the short fence if they really want to break it; it just makes it really difficult for a guest to walk out from their own patio! Most guests DON'T want to be climbing fences when they paid over $250 a night plus taxes, plus resort fees, plus the parking charge. Their reservations department are not properly trained. I have yet to stay and not have a mix up at check in, or check out and it seems to be the communication between the hotel staff and the big black hold of "central reservations". The beds are comfy, but the bathroom has no fan and the window in the bathroom is cemented shut! So, no air circulation for showers, hair dryers, and people using the toilet. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination..but it is not pleasant! I can only be apologized to so many times, given vouchers for upgrades, comped parking..and then it doesn't matter what they would give me, it's just not worth the stress when staying at a resort is supposed to be relaxing, not solving one problem after another.

Room Tip: "Premium Bay View Room" 1st floor has a gate leading out to a green area by the bay, but a...

My wife and 3 children have stayed at the Dana several times and we love it! Our next trip is this July 2014 and we can hardly wait. We always have a great time, we bring our 22 foot boat and rent a slip for it at the Dana's Marina. Ted, the dock master is the BEST! He is always very helpful and really knows his stuff. The rooms are always clean and neat, the staff really takes care of us and is always willing to help if we have any concerns or questions. We always ask for one of the suites and the prices are fair. There are some incidental fees but they are small and of no concern to us, others here have posted that they didn't like those small fees added on. I may suggest that they stay at a Motel 6 if they're THAT cheap. The Dana is a great place and we never stay anywhere else when in San Diego. - David Anderson

ROOM // We arrived and The Dana upgraded us to a "view" room which was great! However, the room had a smooshed bug in it on the wall [ha!], so it felt gross. That aside, the room was cozy, and they had robes to wear and flavored coffee creamer as well as a coffee machine in the room. Two Pool areas as well made it quite nice.

RESTAURANT // Lyle Ervin [our server] was a total gem. He was a prince, gentleman, and a keeper. He was always patient, always listening, and always let us know we were being paid attention to. Made our afternoon fantastic. Thanks, Lyle!

Room Tip: Definitely get a room with a "view" of the courtyard. And if you can, get a room on floor...
