“Nice location but we wouldn't stay there again”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Luckily we got this through Hotwire.com so we got a great deal. When we arrived I heard where our room was and upgraded to what they said was a larger room with a patio to the garden area and real close to the pool. I really wonder what the original room size would have been because the room was crowded. I admit there were 4 of us, 2 adult, and 2 three year old twins. But still, it was compact. The upgrade cost a little but I was able to bargain a bit so again, for the price we paid this was ok, but had we paid the prices they ask on their webpages I'd have been furious.
The carpets were filthy in our room, the a/c was really loud, it only had 2 fan settings, hurricane and tornado. Luckily it was pretty cool the days we were staying there so didn't have it on at night. The walls are pretty thin so if you stay there you better hope you don't have any partying neighbors. There was a group a few rooms down from us out on their patio pretty late making a bunch of noise and we could hear like they were right next to us. We called the frond desk about that though and they took care of that quickly so that's one plus point for them. The buildings seemed a bit aged and could use some better upkeep. The bathroom had some bugs in it and the shower head was broke causing water to spray all over the ceiling as well.
Paying all the extras for parking, daily charges etc was kind of annoying but at least we knew beforehand that we'd have those charges so they didn't come as a surprise and cannot really complain about that.
They have a shuttle to Sea World but the times they go and pick you up weren't that great. We ended up taking the shuttle there and a taxi back. But you can walk, we just had two young kids with us who'd walked all over sea world so didn't feel like making them walk back to the hotel either.
We had drinks at the FireFly but almost had to leave since no one would come take our order. Someone showed us to our seats and said they'd be right with us and even came back 5 min later to say someone is coming right away but we still waited way too long. Right when we were about to leave someone finally came to take our order.
They have weekend movie nights and they told us they'd end at 9pm but it was actually 10pm. That's not a big deal for us since we were still awake and it didn't seem to bother our sleeping kids, but if you are someone that likes to go to bed early, don't stay anywhere near the pool.
The pools are nice and it was cool that there are 2 nice pools to choose from. One of them even has a big sand box next to it with all kinds of sand toys available for the kids to play with. There was even a water faucet built in for them to get water to help wet the sand for building castles etc. That was a huge hit with our kids.
Overall I'm ok that we stayed for the price we got through hotwire but I wouldn't go there again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. Try someplace else :)

Room Tip: Request a newer, larger room. It'll cost you more but if you just have to stay here, you'll...

We went to San Diego to visit family, but I wanted to stay somewhere that was resort like to truly make it feel like a vacation. I booked the Dana through an Amex vacations with our flights etc. I called about a month before our arrival to ask if our room had a king size bed. I was told that because I had booked through a 3rd party they had no control. She told me that when we checked in, if there was one available I could have it. Weird. You can't control your own hotel? I called back 2 days before we arrived and I was told the same thing. When we checked in, obviously they didn't have the room I wanted. They told me that since they didn't have the King room they upgraded us to a room with a view. Now just a little information -- the Dana is a series of 2 story buildings with about 10 rooms per floor, so 20 per building. It's set on the bay with a big marina in front of it. When we got to our room, they had us on the 2nd floor overlooking the noisy pool. And the first floor rooms, which apparently we were upgraded from, had sliding glass doors and small patios. We had a window. Thanks for nothing!

Otherwise our stay was fine. The room was clean enough. Typical wear and tear of hotels. The breakfast restaurant, The Blue Pearl, does a really nice job. If you're going to San Diego and want to say somewhere where you won't have to leave all day, this is not the place for you. I spent one day at the pool, but for us this was just a landing pad at night and a place for breakfast each morning. They do offer paddle board rentals and bike rentals. Mission Bay is about a mile walk which we did a few times. They charge for nightly parking ($20) and a 9$ per day fee for wireless internet. I'm not sure I would book here again.

We usually stay with family when we visit San Diego but we stayed at The Dana and it was a true vacation. Water view, resort style room and good food! The kids enjoyed the pool and we enjoyed the view. It was 5 minutes from Sea World but very quite and it didn't feel crowded.

Large 2-story resort on a large parcel right on Mission Bay--great location. Rooms have been renovated and are nicely furnished and comfortable. They really cater to kids and families; they have movies by the pool on summer nights and a shuttle to Sea World. Staff is very solicitous.
A quibble: Fees (parking and resort.). The resort fee is silly:$9 for WiFi and boarding passes?

We recently discovered this gem of a place in San Diego. It was our first visit to the city and we loved it as there are so many things to do. The Dana is in a good position with a regular bus just outside the door running to the bus station near the Old Town from where you can catch further transport to the places of interest.
There were lots of families staying at the Dana and it is well served for an enjoyable family stay with two pools, bikes and lots of walking trails nearby. There is an excellent bistro on site which serves a good variety of good quality food.
It all sits in a lovely garden setting. We even were able to take a free shuttle to the airport for our flight to Los Angeles. We would thoroughly recommend this place.

Room Tip: There is no lift so those with mobility problems would be best served by ground rooms.

We normally stay with friends in PB, OB or La Jolla, but on this trip we brought along 5 teenagers and as many bicycles. So, we decided to get 2 rooms at this gem. Our rooms were not upgraded but offered a pleasant view of the marina and an easy walk to the beautiful pool. Plus, since the rooms were not ready in a timely manner we were given credit at the Firefly cafe. The appetizers and draft beer selection were fantastic. The staff was friendly but a little harried due to the flow of customers. Our keys didn't work after the first morning of our two night stay and their public computer was not working. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and will book again in the future.

We had a couple of nights here recently and loved it. The first night was a little disappointing (but no fault of the hotel) we got woken up at 0430 by the family in the next room and it wasnt just the kids making the noise. The parents made no effort at all to keep their own voices down or to quieten their children and thought it would be a good idea to have a sing song whilst their neighbors were trying to sleep. I approached the hotel reception the following morning to enquire whether they were leaving that day. Unfortunately they were not but they managed to move us to another room right then and there so we were rapt with that. I just feel sorry for the next guests who would be allocated next to them. We had a meal at the Firefly restaurant which was fantastic and had pizzas from the same place the next night and they would be the best pizzas we have ever had. If we return to San Diego we will definitely stay here again, thanks a lot.
