“Formerly Known As the Thunderbird Lodge”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

We stayed here as we were going to visit the canyon and it was the "only hotel in the park", there was a better choice the same distance from the park entrance as this one. The hotel itself used to be the Thunderbird Lodge, there are still signs for it, this makes it confusing when trying to check it out and make reservations. The hotel is very quaint and rustic. It was clean and looked as if everything had been recently painted. The restaurant is more of a cafeteria with single selections each night. Breakfast was decent and got us going for the day.

Thank you for the rating and review of your stay at Thunderbird Lodge/Sacred Lodge in Canyon De Chelly.

Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise took over management of the Lodge in January 2016. Since then many improvements and upgrades have been made to the guest rooms as well as the property and surroundings. All guest rooms now are equipped with a Keurig coffee/tea maker, flat screen television, hair dryer, microwave and mini-fridge. All the rooms have new carpet, mattresses, linens and towels. The wifi has been updated, but still may not be as fast as what some people are used to given the remote area.

We also are offering All-Day and 4-Hour Navajo-guided tours of the Canyon in our 10 passenger, 6-wheel drive Pinzgauer army-troop carrier vehicles. It is the best way to really experience Canyon De Chelly.

Should your journey bring you back to Canyon De Chelly, we hope to welcome you back to Thunderbird Lodge.

This property used to be the Thunderbird Lodge but it has been bought by the same folks that operate The View hotel in Monument Valley. The information book in the room was almost identical to the one at The View with much stuff verbatim from that one.

First let me say that everyone we dealt with was pleasant, helpful, courteous, gracious, smiling,...

However, we were really disappointed in a few other things. Despite the book in the room talking about the chef and the cuisine, there is actually no restaurant at the Lodge. It is a cafeteria and with limited choices at that. The food was just like the bulk packages of prepared stuff you would get from a Sam's or Costco and warmed it up. The chicken fried steak was actually chicken (not steak) but I didn't find that out until the first bite. The green beans were bland and just like they had been dumped from a can into a pot and boiled until the flavor was gone.

We did not return to the cafeteria for breakfast the next morning so I cannot comment on that. We went to the Holiday Inn and had breakfast there.

The room we had was neat and clean enough but had a definite musty smell. The bed was really soft and "well-used." The room was in need of some updating.

We had one small bar of hand soap and no bath soap but a quick walk to the office got me what we needed (with a smile). I think this was just a housekeeping oversight.

We really wanted our second trip to Canyon de Chelly to be even better than our first several years ago and we thought staying at the Sacred Canyon Lodge would help us accomplish that but our stay at the Lodge left us a bit disappointed.

(On our first trip we stayed at the Holiday Inn and probably will choose it if we are ever back.)

FYI - Not the fault of the Lodge but AT&T cell service was usually "No Service" although twice a got a few minutes of 1 bar. (The AT&T service at the Holiday Inn was fine when I checked it at breakfast.)

We stayed at the Sacred Canyon Lodge this week, which was a wonderful experience. Although the "check-in" and cafe staff were not particularly friendly, we had our own "casita," which was quiet, well-appointed, and met our expectations in every way. The king sized bed was comfortable (no sagging mattresses, which previously were reported on this site). Previous reviewers made us a little trepidatious, but none of the negative reports proved true in our case. No problems with plumbing, heat/cooling, etc. The Thunderbird Cafe was fine for breakfasts, but we didn't venture into the cafeteria stye eating for dinners. In fact, there were not great options in Chinle; we picked up chicken at Church's, brought it back to our room, and with a glass of wine, we were set for the evening. We would stay here again, as it was the perfect location to experience Canyon de Chelly.

Room Tip: I missed not having a fitness center -- and for those who want a pool, none was available.

The room was clean, but the mattress sagged to the middle. The iron bars on the windows are a put-off. You may be staying in the canyon, but it's not noticeable. Did not eat in the cafeteria, the food looked like it had beenb there all day.

Colorado Jim and I stayed at the Sacred Canyon Lodge for one night incident to our Canyon de Chelly visit during last September’s Dumb & Dumber V buddy trip. When I made the reservation many months before, I thought it would be neat to stay at the park lodge instead of in one of the Chinle motels. CJ and I had stayed in park lodges before, and we thought we were up to speed on the meaning of the term. This place proved us wrong. Our assigned building looked exactly like a vintage motel, and the room we were in looked, functioned, and even smelled like a badly dated motel room. It was clean, and the beds were reasonably comfortable, but the place was a far cry from what we thought we were paying for.

That night, when a storm knocked out the power and the entire lodge complex was pitch black for hours on end, not a single lodge employee could be found anywhere. Nor could we find an employee when we left early the next morning before the cafeteria was scheduled to open. Very strange.

This is not to say that the Sacred Canyon Lodge lacked positives. Despite the institutional look and feel of the lodge’s cafeteria, you can get a decent lunch there. including pretty good pie. The gift shop has lots of good stuff, and I suspect that my wife would have bought some of that beautifully crafted silver and turquoise jewelry had she been along on the trip.

Our room in this adobe style lodge was very comfortable, clean and considerably larger than the past two accommodations, which were significantly more expensive. Canyon de Chelly South Drive in the late afternoon was lovely. Unfortunately the cafe was closed by the time we returned from doing sunset photos, so we ended up with fast food in nearby Chile. The gift shop was exceptional; the selection competed with the nicer shops in Santa Fe, with better prices. And breakfast at the cafe was quite good.

After staying at The View in Monument Valley, this lodge's sister property, this was a very different experience. It is a traditional national park lodge, with the old historical furniture. Our room even had the old stationary from when it was the Thunderbird Lodge.

This is not a luxurious place, but it is in close proximity to the park, and is very clean, having comfortable beds. The on-site restaurant is a cafeteria style place with a virtually identical menu to that served at The View but at slightly better prices. Frankly, don't come to this lodge (or the View for that matter) for the food. It is OK, but nothing to make the trip for. If you are staying for several days, you will probably want to try to find another dining option. Be aware that everything closes up early, so if you are looking for food after 8:30 or 9:00, you will be stuck going to one of the two fast food places in town….

While you are here, you MUST take a jeep trip down to the canyon floor. It was truly spectacular, and the guides are great. ALSO -- while you are at overlooks on the rim of the canyon, be careful with kids and pets. There are lots of unguarded cliffs, and you don't want to leave the park with fewer people than you came in with.
