“Superb location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2013

This hotel is located at the beginning of the canyon..Very comfortable and clean. All personnel were very friendly and courteous. Restaurant was very good. We would return if in the area. We stayed on the top floor. There is no elevator so be prepared to carry luggage upstairs.

There aren’t many good lodging options in Chinle. We chose Holiday Inn based on its reputation, authentic look (with surroundings), and location relative to the canyon. The cons of this hotel were: lukewarm shower and old, loud HVAC units (bring earplugs). The pros were: reputation, location, guest laundry, easily obtained late checkout time, and ability to rent safety deposit box free of charge. The hotel room was as you’d expect—king bed, non-smoking, with small fridge (a plus!).

The necessity of the safety deposit box was based on the MANY posted signs about not leaving valuables in your car or viewable anywhere. Chinle has a high crime rate, which intimidated us, quite frankly. We made sure to be aware of our surroundings at all times, never flaunted our gear for anyone to see, and never left anything valuable in the car. While on tours, we either carried our stuff with us (eg, camera gear) or left it in the hotel safety deposit box.

The hotel easily accommodated our late check out time, which was helpful since we had been concerned about leaving our luggage and gear in our car for our 4-hour morning tour. We left Chinle with all of our belongings intact.

For stories and pictures from our trip, see The Curious Travelers blog.

Room Tip: Room 237 had lukewarm water and a loud AC unit. We preferred being on the 2nd floor since the first...

The canyon de chelly is a really great visit, not to be missed, especially as its one of the few parks open during the US gov shutdown. However there isn't much to choose from for accommodation or eating close by. We stayed two nights at the holiday inn. Our arrival set the tone. We arrived at lunchtime hoping for some lunch and they couldn't even provide a cup of coffee. The room was fine but the restaurant left much to be desired. Real lack of service especially from the greeter who was always on the phone and couldn't be bothered to show us to a table. Long wait for our meals and over 20 mins at the table to even get a drink of water.

All this for a hotel which cost about double what we have been paying in other towns
If visiting the canyon I would recommend staying at most one night in chinle

Dear clareacer,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay. It is unfortunate to see the service at the restaurant prevented you from fully enjoying your time at the hotel. We do take all of the reviews we receive very seriously and we are confident the necessary adjustments will be made, in order to achieve complete guest satisfaction.

Thank you again for your comments, we look forward to serving you in the future.

Sincerely,

There is no opportunity on TA to split a review for Chinle itself and the hotel so I will do both here.
Chinle - this is a scary place. It is not for tourists (and doesn't cater for). There are many beggars who confront you at accessible places such as petrol stations. There are no restaurants (other than Burger King!) apart from the hotel.
While the only attraction (great though it is) is Canyon De Chelley, this also has many warning signs at every look out to remove valuables and lock your car. There are vendors at several look outs who give a hard sell for their wears.
Hotel - don't expect a pleasant welcome! The lady who served us was monosyllabic, no smile or any pleasantries whatsoever. We put this down to the character & culture of where we were staying but you would expect at least a smile and an 'hello' from a hotel receptionist.
The hotel itself was great. The room was fairly big, wifi easy access and the restaurant was superb. The staff there were pleasant and attentive. The food was lovely. I had the trout and my husband had the rack of ribs - both meals delicious. The service was fast and efficient.
Canyon-De-Chelley was a site to see. You can do both North and South Rims in a full day. We took the White House Ruins Trail in the South Rim, that is definitely worth a trek.

I spent the night here before venturing into Canyon de Chelly, as this was the cheapest room available. It worked out well - the room was spacious and had a fridge, wi-fi had no problems, and I had an unexpected balcony view - it looked over the parking lot, but it also gave me a nice full moon shot too. Parking was an issue the night I was there - by the time I rolled in at 10:30, there were literally a handful of spaces left - I had to drive back to where the lobby. And there's no free breakfast because the hotel houses Garcia's. No reason not to consider this place if you're going to Canyon de Chelly (and which traveler to Chinle isn't going there?).

This is the closest hotel to the Canyon. It is on the edge of town less than a mile from the Monument entrance. Rooms are large - ours had a nice patio door overlooking a shaded grassy area. The patio though was quite small and had no chairs.

The restaurant was extremely busy-but the wait staff was pleasant. The food is OK, but not too special. Many large groups stay and eat here.

Room Tip: Closest hotel to the Canyon.

We stayed here while visiting Canyon De Chelly. The hotel is older but very well kept. Clean and the restaurant was good considering they have a captive clientele. I would stay here again if I were in the area.

We had made a reservation for 4 people with a deposit with Antelope Tours about 5 months before our visit. We were under the impression that this would be a private tour with Adam Teller. When he was late a nice lady from another tour company called him. Turns out he sent his father to lead the tour and had combined our tour with another couple. That would mean 7 people in the SUV. The other lady had a bad knee so she understandably wanted to be in the second row seat while her husband sat up front. That would mean that two of our group would have to sit in the third row seats. Not a pleasant prospect for an 8 hour tour that cost $495. Seems they had over booked their tours for a large bus tour group. They were greedy and I feel unfair to us. We asked for a return of our deposit which they did. Eleanor from Canyon De Chelly tours found another tour guide for us. Thank you to Eleanor! We had a great tour!
