Holiday Inn Canyon de Chelly
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Chinle
Reviewed 11 June 2014

After driving through Chinle, Arizona, this hotel is a delight. it is located right at the entrance to the Canyon de Chelly park. This is very handy if you just want to tour the Canyon whatever way you choose.

The check in was vey simple, and the check in person was very helpful. The single room with. King is the usual size for most motels. One of the walls was adobe brick inside the room, beside being the outside structure also. The hallway rugs are very Navajo looking, which was the theme throughout the buildings. it is a two story motel without elevators. There was a swimming pool along with a laundry facility. They do joy offer the free breakfast like most hotels now. But they do have a restaurant on site.

I stayed here for two nights while traveling around the southwest. The hotel is literally a 1000 feet from the entrance of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument. So, if you intend on visiting the park then it is a convenient place to stay.

The condition of the room was better than I expected. It looked as though everything had been recently remodeled. The bed was comfortable. The carpet was new and clean. There was a flat screen TV with a nice selection of channels. The bathroom had plenty of room and good water pressure. I had an interior king room on the first floor facing a courtyard. This room was very quiet and I did not hear any noise at night or from cars. WIFI worked fine in the room. However, WIFI did not work in the restaurant.

There are not many restaurants in Chinle. Therefore, many people staying here will also eat here. I ate breakfast here once and two dinners. I ordered the breakfast buffet, which I think was a mistake. The items did not seem fresh and there was not much selection. I had a burger one night and the Indian taco on the second night. The food was just OK. Service is fairly slow. Plan on a full hour for dinner or breakfast. I wanted to order a glass of wine with dinner but Chinle is a dry town and you cannot buy alcohol anywhere. The closest place is a two hour drive away. I only mention this because people may wish to stock up before coming to Chinle or the Reservation.

Room Tip: Try to get an interior courtyard room on the first floor.

We stayed here two nights when visiting Canyon de Chelly. Unless you are going to explore the Canyon fully you could probably do it in one night especially if travelling from Monument Valley which is not far away.

As other reviewers have commented, there is very little choice of hotels or restaurants in Chinle, which has little to offer other than being on the doorstep of the Canyon. That said, we felt that we made the right choice of hotel. The room was large, light and clean and our only complaint was that the walls were paper thin. On our first night we could hear the TV, conversation (and more!) from the next door room but did get to sleep well both nights.

The hotels grounds are pleasant enough and although we didn't use it, the pool looked inviting. We dined in the restaurant twice and also took breakfast there. The food is adequate and unlike one or two other reviewers we found the serving staff to be friendly and efficient and didn't have to wait long for our food. A breakfast buffet is available for $9.99 a head but we opted for the menu and weren't disappointed. We did find the hotel front desk staff to be a little off hand and uncommunicative compared with others we encountered on our travels.

If you are intending to take a guided tour of the Canyon you may want to do a bit of pre-planning. We were told at the Visitor Centre that tours could be arranged through the hotels but at the hotel we were merely referred to a printed sheet of tour operators and advised to look them up on the internet which you might want to do before leaving home. In the end we opted to walk into the Canyon on the only trail that you can use without a guide. This is not at all arduous and takes you down to the White House Ruins where you will inevitably find Navaho selling their jewellery and pottery.

All in all a pleasant enough stay but really noisy neighbours could be a problem. Our rating might be a tad on the generous side and the current overall rating of this hotel as somewhere between Average and Very Good seems about right to us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the internal staircase. Ours was right opposite the top and we could hear p...

When reading the reviews of the available options in Chinle you were left with one overall impression - don't expect too much.

Having driven past the other options in town we concluded that we had probably picked the better option in the Holiday Inn.

We were expecting the Holiday Inn to be one of our weaker accommodation choices on our 3 week circuit of the South West. It was, but having said that it was a typical Holiday Inn and we received an acceptable Holiday Inn type experience. The room was comfortable with all the amenities you expect in a standard motel type experience. It worked and the ultimate test was did we had a restful night. Yes we did.

Our only grumble was the restaurant. Food quality - ok if you ordered off the menu, not the buffet. The service was on the slow (and absent minded) side. Is this going to give you a meal to remember - no. Will you leave feeling that more could have been done on food quality and service - yes. The overall experience (and I acknowledge a little lack of imagination in the rating) was ok.

We had lowered our expectations for our stay and as such were neither wowed or disappointed. Perhaps that is the best way to look at the Holiday Inn at Canyon de Chelly average.

Spent two nights recently at the Holiday Inn in Chinle. It has the advantage of being very near the park. My room was quiet and clean, with all the amenities. I didn't try the pool but hear it is very pleasant. Breakfast was not included, but I found a low-cost, excellent menu choice.

I was very pleased with my stay and recommend to all.

We enjoyed our stay here, so very near the entrance to Canyon de Chelly. Our only small gripe was Garcia's restaurant where the service was slow and the staff not very pleasant. We were undercharged for dinner and when this was pointed out, the waitress, far from being sorry (or perhaps grateful), didn't care at all. But the rooms were very nice, clean and the hotel looked very well maintained.

Enjoyed two nights here, with comfortable room. Amenities included in-room 'fridge, free wifi, and a nice view out the window. The pool looked inviting and quite a few travelers tested it out in the later part of the 96 degree day. The restaurant was "OK", with a breakfast buffet that was NOT included in the rate, and slow service for those who opted for simpler, but good fare. Dinner was also lackluster, but service much better.
There is a small fitness room available too. No newspaper.

Room Tip: If you don't want to climb stairs, ask to be on the first floor as there aren't elevators. E...
