“Off the Grid”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

We stayed at Gull Cottage for 4 nights after a busy night in Boston and a couple nights in Martha's Vineyard. The location was perfect only about 30 minutes from P Town and a short drive to Chatham and other destinations. The breakfasts and hospitality were wonderful, as we had breakfast each morning with Pat and Randy, the owners. We looked forward to the tips they gave us to local sights and the stories about the history of the cottage. The boat house, which is where vistors stay, is for one couple or group and it's everything that you need. A very nice place to relax along with a comfortable bed and a bathroom with a shower. We took lawn chairs, provided by the owners, and spent and hour or two at the lake. We enjoyed breakfast each morning in the screened in porch. During breakfast, we saw hummingbirds, chipmunks and even a fox feeding 20 feet from us! While the cottage is off the beaten path, there are many nice restaurants within 15 minutes of the B&B along with a variety of beaches and shops. This is a perfect place to get off the grid. There are no cell phone service, internet or t.v. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of having no access to technology, but if that's something you need, this would'nt be the place. We will have memories from the stay that we will hold close to our hearts. Thank you to Pat and Randy!

My 12 year old daughter and I just spent a treasured three nights at Gull Cottage, bird watching on the two ponds fronting the property and spending cozy evenings in the boathouse working on a challenging puzzle that Pat provided. The boathouse was relaxing and full to the brim of interesting books, be it nature guides, gardening, home improvement or the New York times best seller list - books for all interests were there in abundance. The shower was hot and very welcome after a cold hike in the nearby salt marshes, and the cottage was appointed with everything you could think of to make your stay as comfortable as possible - including binoculars, snacks, a beverage stocked refridgerator, and a warm beverage machine.

Even in the dead of winter we enjoyed the many outdoor nature walks in the region and were very pleased to take in the flurry of bird activity at Gull Cottage itself. We were especially happy to see that the boathouse had an indoor bird feeder that literally brought the birds into the boathouse for close observation, sightings included black cap chickadees, cardinals, nuthatches, crested titmouses, blue jays, and in the mammal variety - the cutest red squirrel hopped in once in a while. We saw many varieties of water birds on the ponds including a giant blue heron, and we even saw a young bald eagle flying low across Gull Pond one morning. And just beyond the breakfast table there were so many bird feeders that we saw countless birds every morning including several species of woodpeckers.

Enough about birds, and location - the real key to our happy stay at the Gull Pond Bed and Breakfast was Pat and Randy who were, and are, the most welcoming and interesting of hosts. They have preserved this little piece of history with such love, and they so willingly share all of their knowledge and time with their guests. The breakfasts were delicious every morning, and such care was taken to make the presentation of the meal so beautiful, that we really felt we had experienced a very special place with a very special couple.

I can't wait to come back with my husband in the spring to swim and kayak in these clear sandy-bottomed ponds, and to enjoy Pat and Randy's hospitality once again.

Highlight of our stay

We ended our whirlwind tour of New England on Cape Cod, on a high, spending four nights at Gull Cottage, near Wellfleet, surrounded by the National Seashore. The boathouse where we stayed was built in 1973 though it looks suitably weathered on the outside and was nicely furnished and well appointed on the inside, with all the expected, modern amenities, including an unexpected, homely gas fire. Although there is no TV or wi-fi, there are shelves full of books, stacks of games and the numerous birds flitting about the feeders can provide hours of entertainment. The boathouse kitchen comes with a whole shelf of cooking books for inspiration, a hotplate and a small fridge. A BBQ is available for an al fresco alternative on the elevated wooden deck with its view through the trees to Gull Pond. The boathouse is very private and quiet, located away from the main house (a lovely Full Cape cottage packed with antiques) and surrounded by woods and wildlife (we recorded foxes, racoons, possums and saw numerous bird species and even a hog-nosed snake, totally harmless and an unexpected bonus). Peace and quiet is guaranteed - being so far from other houses and roads, you really do hear nothing but the wind in the trees and the sound of singing birds.

Not only were the surrounding perfect, but Pat and Randy were welcoming, helpful (they drove us into Wellfleet for the Oysterfest as parking was a problem and provided many a useful sightseeing tip, as well as showed us round their beautiful house), knowledgeable, entertaining (breakfasts often extended longer than planned) and superb cooks. Breakfasts were served in the dinning room as it was chilly when we were there (although a bug-proof porch provides a summer alternative) and were wholesome, balanced, varied and delicious, as was the conversation that accompanied them.

Granted, this might not be the place for everyone. The access road is along a sandy, bumpy track through the woods (it posed no problem for our 4x4 but we did wonder whether we were going the right way the first time we drove down it in the pitch black as there were no signposts or signs of habitation), the property is isolated (that's why we picked it), Randy and Pat don't accept credit cards, the boathouse studio is accessed via a steepish set of steps (all insurmountable 15 of them!) and there’s no TV or wi-fi (shock, horror!). In other words, it suited us to a T and will suit anyone seeking peace and tranquillity (rare on the busy Cape), birds and other wildlife, extensive natural property (don’t go thinking manicured garden), stimulating conversation, hearty breakfasts, a private beach on one of two nearby kettle ponds (more are located nearby and they are perfect for swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing and jogging around) and a network of trails through the National Seashore. You can also walk to the sea (we didn’t) and into Wellfleet town center though it took 45 minutes and required a reasonable sense of direction. Pat and Randy were more than happy to provide hiking directions and ideas.

Wellfleet itself features restaurants to suit most budgets, a handful of art galleries, a grocery and liquor store, a drive-in-cinema and the Audubon Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary (which is just down the road and well worth a half day or longer visit). Other local attractions which we visited included the white cedar swamp trail at Marconi Beach, Fort Hill and the Wellfleet Oysterfest (in October).

Our stay here was the most memorable and enjoyable part of the trip. We would love to go back and wouldn’t dream of staying anywhere else if we did.

We spent a couple of nights at Gull Cottage in between a hectic week in New York and a few days in Boston. It proved to be the ideal escape from the bright lights and rush of sightseeing in a big city. The setting was both beautiful and peaceful, and Randy and Pat's hospitality far exceeded our expectations. The boathouse we stayed in is very homely and tastefully decorated, while the tasty breakfasts were a highlight of the day. This part of our trip was something that has really stayed with us and if we were ever in the area, we would return without hesitation.

My husband and I had an excellent stay at Gull Cottage. We spent 5 nights there and so enjoyed not only the setting, but also Pat and Randy's company. The breakfasts were delicious and our hosts were super nice and helpful in their knowledge of the area. The location of Gull Cottage is also great. We did a ton of great biking right from the driveway. We were also close to the beach and to downtown Wellfleet. The boathouse was very cozy and comfortable- plus really private. I loved waking up, making a cup of coffee, and reading my book on the back deck. Being right on the pond was a treat too. The water was the perfect temp. for swimming and it felt great after coming back from the ocean. We are already looking forward to our vacation there next summer.

Randy and Pat are such gracious hosts. We spent two days recently and the boathouse is just a really comfortable, cozy, retreat from the world - like being in a birdsnest. Breakfast was always delicious and the company, entertaining. The views of the ponds from the yard were just beautiful and the hummingbirds were a lot of fun to watch. No, tv, phone, radios.....just the peaceful sound of nature.

My expectations of Wellfleet are simple, it's got to be perfect and I was introducing my fiancé to somewhere I have been spending summers since I was 1, so the stakes were high. Gull Cottage delivered. Nestled in the woods, just above Gull Pond, you feel like there is no one else around. The pool is a pond, the fitness centre the dunes and the internet is at the library. The boat house gives you plenty of space to relax in, and Pat and Randy are perfect hosts. The sociable, bird and animal watching, delicious breakfasts will live long in our memories.

Room Tip: there's only one, so book early.
