“The Harbor in Full View”
Review of Mayo Beach

Mayo Beach
Ranked #14 of 39 things to do in Wellfleet
Attraction details
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Mayo Beach is the "town beach" because of its location right next to the pier. Although smaller than others in Wellfleet, it is more accessible and provides a full view of the harbor, which is always alive with boats, fishermen and seagulls. A small lot limits parking so many visitors walk from nearby cottages or
from he larger lot on the pier. The Bookstore restaurant across the street and Mac's right on the harbor are available for food and drink. Take time to explore the clapboard house that used to be the town lighthouse and read about the large hotel that used to jut into the water from this beach.

This beach is rarely crowded. I often stared out at it when I worked across the street from it. Mayo Beach is one of the best places to catch a sunset, and has a lot of history around it. The house Hopper painted once had the Mayo beach lighthouse. This is a nice place to hang out with a friend or just to reflect.

Stopped to see the old light house. Wow, all the wild roses were in bloom around it. Great scene. We can see why this is a favorite spot for painters.

If you want waves and lots of activity, this is not your beach. This is a beautiful spot, right in town, to take a chair and settle in with a book, watch the boats go in or out or just enjoy the scenery. At low tide, you can watch the oyster farmers gather their crop, take a long walk on the flats or wander among the old pilings of the historic Chequessett Inn. Sunsets are magnificent from here. Great beach for children. Mayo Beach is on my "Don't miss list."

I love the quietness and the stillness of the waters. I just wished the water wasn't so stirred up by the oyster farmers constantly
checking their beds. Very Peaceful though and you can definitely read in peace!
